I've just started playing this, courtesy of a free copy from my mate at EA. Seems good so far. However, I am not sure I see the point of these packs. If you have completed the game, how much replay potential is there and how much will you care about different skins (the ultimate in rubbish DLC) or slightly better guns?
To my mind, DLC should be about new areas/challenges, not a slight tweak of the original experience.

Exactly. Dead Space is a cool new IP and they could have given it extra legs by offering new missions or something, if they dont want me to trade it in they better have some better ideas up their sleeves than new suits or camouflaged guns.
StonecoldMC - you've been gaming since 1992? You must be knackered!
More seriously, I've been gaming since 1978 (my brother bought a Binatone TV Master Mk6), so what does that make me? Other than old enough to know better, that is.
The Sony black suit is the best I've seen (and it's free). The Scorpion suit is sh1te looking in terms of design and it costs money! I regret spending £5 topping up my account for that. I could do a better skin myself. As for the rest of these things I don't think I'll bother, seeing as I've finished it now and I won't play it again for another 6 months or so. I can't see the point in playing it all over again with another gun?? It's hardly he type of game that warrants an instant re-play.
However, If alternative levels played from a crew member's perspective were made available then I wouldn't hesitate to download them.

1981 for myself. can still remember getting my first game of Combat on the old wooden 2600. think i've asked you this before Havoc72 but is your signature a copolla quote or from an UNKLE tune?
The "Elite" suit, which is a free download, is all you need to make this a much better game - and it's free! I don't know why they limited your inventory space so much anyway - it's just plain annoying. Brilliant game though!
PS: Born in '64 - gaming since '78 (in case anyone's interested)
I actually wanted to use the following as my sig (also from Psyence Fiction), but it is too long!
"Uh, I feel that this has given me the most incredible and wonderful thing that I have ever been given, and also, the worst. It's a mixed bag. Uh, I have been taken to the, absolutely, to the depths of extreme terror by this. I've had my whole soul undermined by it, on the one hand. On the other hand, uh, in one sense, my experience has been about finding joy..."

I had a chat with someone else on here about how long we had all been gaming, I have probably been playing games since about Xmas 86' when my brother got a NES, I didnt get my first console/computer till 92' (the glorious C64).
if there had been enough space i would've use this great take on Roy Batty's final words, "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe, and from this side only! The flight of a half-man, half-bird. P.S. Is our average age in any way related to the sensible nature of the conversation?
possibly when you go look at some of the other threads and the usual suspects are on there spouting their usual bile. just a possibility that this ain't a topic they can bitch over

I'm confused. Didn't Batty go on about 'attack ships off Orion' and stuff?
I was born in '77, and got a Speccy 48k+ (yes, I missed out on the rubber keys one) Xmas 1984. I got Donkey Kong and I believe a text (with a few graphics) adventure based on Neverending Story, plus the plethora of free games you used to get. It was awesome.
Hey, how many old gits remember 'Blitz', 'Moon Patrol' and 'Aztec Adventure' from the Vic 20 era? Man, they were awesomely(?!) simple games. Hell, you only needed the space bar for Blitz!
At my sister's wedding I was explaining to my nephew (12 years old), how you used to load computer games using a cassette and how this could take upwards of 5 minutes. And even then the game might not still work.
you lot are all whippersnappers! 47 and still clinging onto my collection of stuff including the odd binatone and of course that amazing Intellivision and voice add on! How many of you can say they had an FS1E parked outside the local boozer at 16 to play space invaders? and yeh, it's great when there's no harping on who has the best this and that. mark, shouldn't you be painting that nursery

Genius. I intend to use your post to justify at least another 12 years of gaming.

Blitz was amazing back then. it was like space invaders in reverse dropping bombs from a helichopper that lowered at the edge of the screen. can always remember the first time i taken all the buildings out and managed to get the chopper to land.

yeah he did, its a take on it from Harvey Birdman. and the speccy sucked, c64 all the way baby ah nostalgic fanboyism
Its funny, cos the Speccy had the best catalogue of games, not to mention everyone had one and so piracy was rampant (I had about 300 copied games for a start - used to buy 90 minute cassettes by the bucket load ), but the Commodore had the best graphics, and you claim it was the best... Interesting
Besides, Commodore 64, Spectrum 48. It's a close call. We both know the Amstrad was the ugly stepchild of the three. Ironically, you can draw strange parallels to todays situation... *winks*
*Puts hand up* Old fart gamer here too. The first game I recall playing was Cosmic Alien I believe. That's as far back as I can remember anyway. 1980. It was an arcade machine we had at our local social club at Chubbs. (Dad worked there) My mum and dad used to give me and my bro 10p every so often and we'll run straight to the section that always had 2 arcade machines. We used to get really excited when they bought in a new machine
I got a games console about a year later. I wish I could remember what it was called. Had 2 carts with about 10 games on each. Could have been made by Grandstand (I used to have a tabletop grandstand Scramble too)
Mark... I remember Blitz. My mate had a vic 20 and we used to play that, Jetpac and a game called duck shoot. (Basically a tanx kind of game) If you shot the duck in the bottom he would say 'Cheeky!'

Harvey Birdman... No wonder I didn't recognise it
actually the amstrad cpc464 would have wiped the floor with both of them if programmers had spent any time with it. as soon as they got into bed with sinclair the games were just shoddy ports of speccy games. and don't knock Harvey Birdman, its one of the funniest shows ever made.

I'm a C64 man all the way, it did of course give you me opportunity to 'upgrade' to an Amiga 600 then 1200.
It would be really funny if when all the little goons come back and start derailing the threads with their ususal Fanboy nonsense if we were to have a Fanboy arguement and base it between the Spectrum and the Commodore, they woiuldnt have a clue what was going on.
You think Killzone 2/Gears 2 has good graphics? Have you seen Maniac Mansion???
As an educated guess I could tell from a far that quite a lot of you on the forum were over the age of 30 (your forum names do give it away a little). But to be honest you lot are the target audience for these game companies. I get told this often in my lectures (I'm a games programming student) that the average age of a PC gamer is in the 30s (35 if I recall). It is lower for consoles (around my age - early 20s) but generally because console took off later than the early boom. I've been gaming since I was about 18 months old (miraculously I was able to program my parents Commodore 64 to run the tapes - well when the console felt like running them... ) so I've been hooked on games for nearly 20 years. I've played on Ataris, Commodores, Master System, Mega Drive, Game Gear (what a handheld!), NES, SNES, Gameboy (Original, Pocket, Color*, Adavance and SP), DS, PlayStations 1 - 3 (and PSP), N64, GameCube, Wii, Xbox and Xbox 360. As graphics improve from generation to generation I can still stay that some of my favourite games are those without any. Those old text based adventure games were brilliant. "You're in a room. There's a ladder leaning against the wall. There's an exit to the North and East." Ace. As for Dead Space, brilliant game, finished it fully (every trophy), traded it in, moved on. Charging that much for new costumes and weapon upgrades is ridiculous. I wouldn't buy them even if I still had the game.
* Damn American spelling!. It's colour! We invented the language! I have to type this mistake so often when programming. Rant over.

yeah they were the best. and at least the c64 gave you a tune to listen to whilst loading (usually the one from the Ariston adverts, at least in most of oceans games).plus the speccy only had like 4 colours. c64 for the epic win
actually the amstrad cpc464 would have wiped the floor with both of them if programmers had spent any time with it.
The same could be said for the Wii or PS3, no?
as soon as they got into bed with sinclair the games were just shoddy ports of speccy games.
It's sort of nice to know that even back then, shoddy ports were about.
and don't knock Harvey Birdman, its one of the funniest shows ever made.
Not knocking it, never seen it, that's what I meant. Unlike my mother, I DON'T believe all cartoons are solely for kids - whether that's Simpsons, Family Guy or Futurama, or perhaps Justice League, Samurai Jack, or Harvey Birdman. Just so happens I've not actually seen that show.
I wish they make another, DECENT, Bards Tale. I absolutely loved the first one, and must have spent more time playing that than any other game ever (MMOs aside). THe recent 're-imagining' of it was a travesty though. Such a shame.
I remember once, playing a game called 'Crazy Comets', and it had fantastic music by Rob (I am not worthy) Hubbard. The problem was, that whenever you fired your guns, the music would disappear until the sound effect had finished! I would literally see how long I could last without firing, just so that I could listen to the tune!
I wonder if Geometry Wars, by Bizarre Creations, used that as their influence for the (can't remember the real name) 'so long without dying' achievement?

I really miss gaming in the arcades, that's something you can't explain to someone who never experienced them in their heyday.
My earliest memories are from the arcade - Paperboy, Gauntlet, Spyhunter etc. I also remember the old C16 and the games you could buy in the newsagents...classic Codemasters and Gremlin Graphics games - Super Robin Hood and Petals of Doom...then on to the giddy heights of the Amstrad 6128 - wow, disc!
(sigh)
I was born in 1976 and I've been gaming since I could just about see the screen in an arcade cabinet! - no problems now...I'm 6'4

Yep, there were a lot of s**tty direct ports from the Speccy to Amstrad because of the beloved Z80 but I'll never forget the dropped jaws of my C64 owning mates when they saw the beauty that was Sorcery....great days!! *wipes away tear*
take old Birdman(voiced by Gary Cole) and his trusty sidekick avenger, stick them in a lawyers job and have Stephen Colbert as the boss and watch 15 mins of the funniest tv ever made. Fred Flintstone as a mob boss, Scooby Doo and Shaggy arrested for being stoners, its f**kin hilarious.

Literally ordered the first season this morning off HMV...£11.99
Speaking of ports, Commando's was a classic at the time, especially between Speccy and C64. The C64 had better graphics and the music was (Rob Hubbard again, I think!) brilliant. However, the Speccy version had the better gameplay and more levels. In fact you got the whole arcade experience with the Speccy version.
My favourite, just, was the C64 version, only because I loved the music. But I do wonder that, if forums had existed in those days, what the fanboy ranting would have been like! And don't even get me started on SFII, SNES and Megadrive versions!! I think that was the day that fanboyism started!

I remember reading at the time that when they came to put Rob Hubbard's music in they didn't have enough room so they made the programmer, Chris Butler, butcher the third level to fit it in.
I also remember Johnathan Smith who wrote Spectrum games like Pud Pud and Green Beret, who is now at Travellers Tales putting the Lego games together.

Wasn't the Megadrive version of SFII WOEFULLY late to the party, not to mention the fact that the 3 button joypad just wasn't up to the task?
Surely that alone makes the Megadrive version vastly inferior.
The "Elite" suit, which is a free download, is all you need to make this a much better game - and it's free! I don't know why they limited your inventory space so much anyway - it's just plain annoying. Brilliant game though!

C64 wiped the floor with the Spectrum if you had the disk drive, stuff like Summer Games 2, World Games and RPG's were so much better than ever possible with the Spectrum... saving your World Records to disk for posterity was so cool... nor was it just graphics which were better, the sound quality on the C64 was immense, music whilst loading games, proper speech... I upgraded from the Spectrum to the C64 when stuff like Leaderboard started to come out and you realised that Multiload games were going to become the norm and tape versions just weren't going to cut it anymore.
And the 6 disk "Alter Ego" was a superb peice of programming for the time.

fantastic. wait till the episodes with Mentok the Mind-Taker. funny as f**k

Green Beret was awesome - one of my first games too. Jumping and stabbing your way to victory. I don't think I ever did finish it.... The flamethrower was brilliant on that game though.

I loved those types of games - does anyone remember Gryzor?
I had no idea there were so many of us old timers here. All these games have got me on a full nostalgia trip. Days of going round a mates house, putting something on to load (RebelStar and Chaos on the speccy were seminal gaming moments for me) and playing football in the backyard whilst it loaded.
I also remember the speccy vs commodore arguments we had as kids. Strange how, in those pre-internet days, the debate was more reasonable and less invective filled than these fanboy infested times. Nobody felt the need to slag someone off personally just because they (or, more probably, their parents) had chosen a different computer.
It would be really funny if when all the little goons come back and start derailing the threads with their ususal Fanboy nonsense if we were to have a Fanboy arguement and base it between the Spectrum and the Commodore, they woiuldnt have a clue what was going on.

Ahhh, good times
I remember Elite using "Living On Video" by Opus for their loading music on the Commodore 64 games.
Spectrum wise you were never going to get a good tune when the BASIC command for sound was BEEP... the best Spectrum tunes were the ones on the B side of the Automata games, stuff like Pimania and Uncle Groucho were classics.
Days of going round a mates house, putting something on to load (RebelStar and Chaos on the speccy were seminal gaming moments for me) and playing football in the backyard whilst it loaded.
2 absoluite classics there! We played so much Chaos it was unbelievable. Rebelstar was played quite a bit until Laser Squad came out. still one of my all time favourite games which I put on emulated from time to time. Julian Gollop defined a genre there
I also remember going to the local paper shop to pick up a budget game for my speccy. Didn't have a clue how good they were. Just looked at the pictures and bought the game. Used to love Ninja Scooter Simulater, BMX Kidz etc etc... Back when Codemasters were budget games programmers I think. Who can forget Head over Heals, Nebulus, Cybernoid, Football Manager... the list is endless!

That puts you in the exact same gaming bracket as me then Marty. I was born in '76.
My first system was the Speccy 48k+, the one with the radiator type thing on the side to expel heat! I got Spy Hunter, Tapper and I think Joust as my freebies (US Gold if I remember right although I could be wrong on that).
The 128k +2 with sh***y built in tape deck followed then an import Megadrive, SNES (purely for Street Fighter2 and Mario Kart), Saturn, Dreamcast, PS1 (for a very brief 2 weeks), PS2, Xbox and now 360.
I've owned at least 2 Gameboys plus a Gameboy advance and a DS in my time as well.
Oh yeah, just before I got my Megadrive I also owned a SAM coupe for a few years!! Anyone remember the SAM??

Radar Rat Race a cartridge game(most probably not that one though)? Thats the Vic 20 maze game I remember I also had a text adventure about Dracula again on Vic 20 cart but cannot think of the name(unless it was called Dracula ) .
As for the skin packs keep em is all I can say. Extra playable content is the only DLC I would pay for.

I was born in '76 too. I grew up with two older brothers and we were all mad on games (and still are).
We went through (I'll try to get this right):
Commodore 16 Amstrad 6128 Spectrum (can't remember which one) Master System (the original one with the Hang On card - you could choose between Out Run, Space Harrier and Rocky - we got the Out Run one) Atari ST Megadrive SNES PS1 N64 Dreamcast Saturn (very fleetingly used - I bought it late for X-Men Vs. SF) PS2 (although, I've hardly ever touched one) Gameboy (again fleetingly - I don't get on with handhelds) XBox Gamecube (which seems to have found a new fan in my girlfriend - she loves those bongo games) XBox 360
I'm pretty sure that's the full list - the PC is possibly the most used one out of the lot (despite the fact that I've excluded it from the list), especially with my brothers. The first real game that we had was one of those Astro Wars things....you'd 'go round the clock' and start again.
I was born in '77, and got a Speccy 48k+ (yes, I missed out on the rubber keys one) Xmas 1984. I got Donkey Kong and I believe a text (with a few graphics) adventure based on Neverending Story, plus the plethora of free games you used to get. It was awesome.

Between us, we still own most of them!
Bloody hell PV!
I remember "Astro Wars"...the little silver all-in-one Galaxian rip-off! Brilliant game and I think by Grandstand if I'm not mistaken!!
Ah Rob Hubbard I remember getting a tape?(or something) with quite a few of his scores on came on a mag or with a game. His stuff on a 3 voice SID chip was amazing for what he had to work with.

Oh man, i used to love Astro Wars! My older brother had that along with a TomyTronic 3D. It was the white one with the 3 lane racing game on it. I was so addicted to that.
tomytronic 3d's were some of the coolest things ever.
as for dead space's dlc: rip off. anyone with sense will swerve it,those without will pay for flame decals for a weapon and then feel dirty and used afterwards.
Grandstand (I believe it was originally for the UK market)Pac-Man that was in the shape of a Pac-Man. I seem to recall it only have 1 maze though.
Vectrex (only the rich neighbours had one of them though).
I dimly recall those.
The consoles that I wished I'd had were the PC Engine - I'd read about it in ACE magazine and I remember it had Vigilante, which was an arcade game I was addicted to at the time (you had to save Madonna), the Neo Geo - but, who didn't? - the games were arcade perfect and ridiculously expensive. Plus, the Beat 'em Up was king back then and it had all the SNK stuff..I loved World Heroes - and the 3DO, purely for Road Rash (which had Soundgarden on the soundtrack) and SF2 (it had the best version at that point).

My brother had a 3DO, although I did go for the Atari Jaguar and the rather excellent AvP that was released for it (the only decent game for it).

A friend of mine bought a PC engine Parma and I have to say it was an awesome console. At the time everyone else had either a Master Sytem or a NES and the PC engine was way ahead of those 2.
A few games of note for it were Formation Soccer (awesome), Batman (a kind of maze game affair that was suprisingly enjoyable), Tales of Monster Path (a Ghosts n Goblins type platformer), Drunken Master (very pretty side scrolling beat em up) and of course Vigilante which was one of those games that everyone loved playing down the local arcade.

Happy days.
I was lucky enough to have a PC Engine. Heard about it in 3 magazines, The C&VG Complete Guide to Consoles. Blue, red and yellow covers. Limited edition mags.
I had Tales of Monster Path. Excellent game. Had a funny striptease cut scene part the way through with spotlights. Very wierd game! Ninja Warriors. only 1 player though, Splatterhouse, Knight Rider was free with it, Altered Beast, Rock-on = rock hard shoot em up and Dungeon Explorer. There were others but I forget right now. 8 bit console too and it rivalled the Megadrive just fine. We had a 5 player multitap too.
I still have my Neo-Geo CD. Got quite a few games for it. The controllers are great for beat-em-ups and the console itself is massive, but rather sexy
Wow, an actually interesting thread with some decent replies that concern gaming and not boring slagging matches?? Plus it's nice to see some fellow 30+ yr olds in here!
Seeing as few of you posted your computers & console purchases I couldn't help myself:
Commodore 16 Spectrum 128k +2 (3rd fave) SEGA Master System Atari 1040 STE SNES (with Wildcard..still my fave console!) PHILIPS CDi (Worst. Console. Ever) Panasonic 3DO (early releases were fantastic at the time) Atari Jaguar (for AVP & Iron Soldier) Nintendo 64 SEGA Dreamcast (My 2nd fave console ever) PS1 XBOX GameCube PS2 Slimline (took my time to get one!) PS3
I think that's the correct order...
I also owned a Saturn & Megadrive but I kinda missed the boat with them as I bought them long after they were out and I was purely a collector with them. The only retro consoles I still play are my Dreamcast and SNES. The speccy is packed away and I sold most of the other ones *sniff..
Ad And back to the thread: Dead Space is fantastic - especially for an EA release. Can't wait to see if the sequel materialises.
2 absoluite classics there! We played so much Chaos it was unbelievable. Rebelstar was played quite a bit until Laser Squad came out. still one of my all time favourite games which I put on emulated from time to time. Julian Gollop defined a genre there
Chaos was, and remains, awesome. We even invented drinking rules for it as we got older. Such a brilliant game. Anyone try the sequel? It just didn't seem as good to me - possibly because it tried to be too clever.
A jazzed up Chaos would be more than welcome on XBLA...
Hah, our local paper shop did the same. I remember a mate buying Chiller from there. I watched a YouTube vid of that recently. The things we put up with back then No mention of Dizzy, which has to be Codemasters Magnus Opus...
I can remember getting hold of a budget Football manager game, can't remember who released it though. I don't think it was Codemasters or Mastertronic, it was some other spurious budget label that appeared at a later date.
I can hardly remember any of the old Mastertronic releases but I had loads at the time. I think they came in yellow cases too?
I remember Ninja Scooter simulator though and of course, Dizzy. I even had that codemasters thing that Dizzy made a cameo in, I think it was called Fast food or something.
Anyone remember Kick Start 1 and 2 and Super Sprint?

I had one called 'Footballer of the Year' by Gremlin Grapics (I think). That was really cool.

Kick Start 2 was brilliant. Great level designer on it too.
