It allows you to chainsaw through the guts of your enemies, and stamp their head flat into the ground, yet Epic big man Cliff Bleszinksi says Gears of War "seems to have more of a female following than other shooters."
Gears of War 2 has a bigger emphasis on romance - a touch which Bleszinksi says helps the game appeal to a broader audience.
"To keep things in check, yes this is still, of course, an action experience, with blood and chainsaws and giant chainsaws, but if there could be just a little bit of human interest in there, just a little bit, maybe it will help it appeal to a slightly broader audience," he said.
"Is it a Nicholas Sparks romance? No, it's not. But there's a little bit of heart in there. For some reason, 'Gears' seems to have more of a female following than other shooters," he went on to say.
"Now this is purely anecdotal evidence, what I see of online and stats and talking to casual gamers and from the hip conversations, it seems to be the case.
"Putting a little bit of heart in a shooter that's full of all sorts of brutality that people are used to? It's kind of a good priority to have, I think. It's the same reason Jack is there. He's a cute little robot. If everything in the game is so bad-ass and nasty, then you just lose perspective. It's like a person who just yells all the time," he told MTV.
Strange though, because whenever we've showed female friends us shoving a chainsaw into a Locust chest, they've squirmed and turned away. And gone back to Nintendogs, Viva Pinata or LittleBigPlanet. EVERY TIME.

My girlfriend loves Gears 2, which results in a lot of split screen coop and horde. A lot of panic and a lot of wondering where the hell to go. Splitscreen coop in 3rd person is bloody hard work.

Don't think it's just stereotypes. My g/f avoids Gears as well. And she does play various games and even did play Dead Space. Just Gears isn't really targetted towards women (perhaps if they made the guys look less like steroid junkies (her words not mine)she'd consider it.)
I am a girl and I play Gears.I completed the first one on Insane too. Both games are my favourite shooters but I dont think its anything to do with me being female. Its just that they are great games.
I also run a really succesful gaming comunity called 360 degrees Faherenheit. Girls can like shooters and gore too. Although I do also like viva pinata......and I am not a troll either

JOKE) and can honestly say I dont think ive ever had any girls on my Team, unless their very, very quiet (and we all know thats not women ... JOKE).
Id be more than happy to play the game with some ladies, chances are your better than me anyway.

I doubt if the game has a little bt of romance in more girls are going to start to like it... If there is a large female following of gears, then I very highly doubt its because of the romance in it.
What the hell is this all about anyway? Did half a million female gamers personally phone Cliffy B to say "We really liked the game because of a vague subplot you shoehorned in"?
Devs have to realise that there aren't games for each sex - it only depends on the person's tastes. For example, a lot of women don't like football (I guess I'm odd there too - love footie) but FIFA execs aren't going out of their way to make all players wear pink fluffy boots and carry handbags to appeal to women.
Football is what it is, and no one will change it anytime soon - so why can't games be the same way?
