MK vs. DC pushes 15 rating "to the very limit"

Producer promises it's not for kids
Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe might not attract the controversy that flared up over the violence in older MK games (think Sub-Zero's spine rip fatality), but it pushes its 15 rating "to the very limit".

That's according to Hans Lo, the senior producer on the tile, who has been doing his best to ease the fears of those of you who've commented on the supposed lack of violence and gore in the game.

"... When we first started on this project we stated that our goal was to make the most cutting-edge Teen game possible," Lo told us in a recent interview.

"There were times when we went over the edge and had to say, 'That definitely isn't Teen, let's bring it back a little bit. Is that Teen? No, not quite. Is that Teen? That might be Teen. Let's bring it back a little more.'

"We sat down with a lot of the ratings boards and said, 'This is what we're thinking. This is what we want to do. In all honesty, is this the kind of thing you will give us a Teen rating or a 15 rating for? Is this something that would be considered way out of line?' They were very helpful in giving us feedback.

"We basically tried to push it to the very limit, within reason, and I think we did a pretty good job. Some people are going to say, 'There's not going to be any blood, you can't have any kind of fatalities,' but you can have fatalities and I think we've got some pretty unique ones, or in the case of the DC heroes we've got heroic brutalities, some of which could have been featured in an original MK game, no question."

Now that's fighting talk.

The game's out for PS3 and 360 on November 21, but before then be sure to look out for the full interview with Lo, which will be published shortly.

I've seen a few fatalities of this game. They suck. They are a bit too voilentless imo. I loved MK just for those fatalities. But now they are only down to bone breaking fatalities, no more gut parties.

What was that about?

Yeah - what was all that about?

Is the medication wearing off? - how does somebody talking about the age-rating of a game equate to 'PS3 fanboys growing the f**k up', as you so eloquently put it?

I'm pretty sure that someone needs to 'grow the f**k up' here...and I don't see any PS3 fanboys.

wiiboy, maybe if you learned to spell and form sentences properly your point would be taken more seriously, however me being a ps3 owning chav i really shouldn't be one to talk.

Get a grip you muppet.

The irony is this statement is nothing short of legendary. How someone can claim they are intelligent, and then spell one of the simplest words in the English language (roll) incorrectly... Well.

This guy is like how NOT to advertise the Wii. He's the polar opposite of that girl in her underwear playing the Wii Fit hula hoop game. Nintendo need to send him a cease and desist order before he does any more damage.

As for the game, I'm not really surprised or disappointed it got a 15. If Mortal Kombat (1) was rated today, that would probably only get a 15 too. There's far worse in todays market.

The heroic brutalities are little short of a nasty punch or what have you, which is disappointing. However, I haven't seen any true fatalities yet, so maybe these elevate the game somewhat. There needs to be fatalities, with the associated gore, otherwise this game will disappear like a fart in the wind.

I'm still cautiously optimistic.

Unlike my opinion on Left 4 Dead. The demo arrived on live yesterday (to no fan fare from C&VG either, weird) and after playing it for an hour or so, realised its awesome! My only concern is of game length, but everything else is just brilliant. LOVE IT!

The original Mortal Kombat was rated 15, well it had a tiny triangle on the box telling people it was suitable for people 15 and over. The franchise only became 18 rated when it was rendered in 3D.

I AM NINTY FAAN< ME INTELLYGENTS.

i'm sorry son, but please refrain from dishonoring my beloved nintendo by making thier faithful fans appears retarded.

I agree with your point that just because something is rated U it isn't necessarily just for kids. You know how many kids would get very far in Viva pinata cause i dont'

However it is also true that the wii is quite limited on Adult only games. An image that Nintendo has been trying to shake for years. Hopefully next years crop of wii games will help fix this.
