Gas Powered Games has announced a sequel to its stupidly epic 2007 RTS Supreme Commander... in partnership with Square Enix.
The Japanese RPG house has entered a "strategic partnership" with GPG for the sequel, which it says will help expand its product line-up out of the traditional role-playing space.
Details on the sequel including gameplay features, platform and release date will be released at a later time, says SE.
"It is truly a great honour to join forces with as renowned a developer and publisher as Square Enix" said RTS overlord Chris Taylor: "Everyone at Gas Powered Games is thrilled about this collaboration, and the results will surely delight video game fans around the world."
"We are extremely excited to begin working with Gas Powered Games' talented personnel and see this strategic partnership as a significant step in our efforts to bring Square Enix titles to a broader global audience," added Square Enix boss John Yamamoto.
We can't say we saw this coming. At least this means we'll hopefully see an improvement on SupCom's cheesey cut-scenes, because everything else in the game was solid.
Might make it a bit more console friendly this time around with square enix on board
They had better not b******s the Sup Com IP up with some jap RPG s**te. Honestly - why the hell would you want to play an RTS on a console? It doesn't work!
You want console friendly - buy EndWar and leave Supreme Commander to PC peoples...
I can't wait for this! Although having just recently upgraded my pc which can now run supcom 1, I'll probably have to upgrade again to fit in with these new requirements:
Supereme commander 2 recommended:
4 x Core i7 16gb ram 5 x nvidia quadro 2 terabytes hd space
At least this means we'll hopefully see an improvement on SupCom's cheesey cut-scenes, because everything else in the game was solid.
... An improvement in the cutscene visuals, maybe. But if you're trying to tell me that a parternship with Square Enix will REDUCE the cheesiness of the cutscenes, you must be having a laugh!
If this does mean that Supreme Commander 2 is coming to consoles, I can't see how it'll retain the original's unique gameplay style. Creating a decent RTS control system with a console pad in mind is always difficuly. If you also factor in just how large scale and complex Supreme Commander is, well it's certainly going to be difficult.
I can remember Square's last major attempt to break out of the Final Fantasy mould, and inflicted The Bouncer on the world.
So this is a win/win for both sides; Gas Powered get a credible partner to break into the Eastern market with, Square get to put its name on a non-RPG game that isn't repetitive rubbish requiring one button to complete the game.
Also, Square's experience can help make this sequel be so much more on console, after the disappointment of the first's transition to the 360.
something tells me this is going to be an utter disappointment or a surprise hit. Too many developers in the mix maybe? japanese influence turns game into turn base trash?
