UK watchdog got "hostile emails" from gamers

After call for MadWorld ban
Media watchdog group mediawatch-UK has complained about the "rain of hostile e-mails" it received from gamers following the call for Sega's MadWorld to be banned.

The group organization's director, John Beyer sparked controversy when he told the Daily Mail - gaming's favourite newspaper - that he hoped the BBFC would refuse Sega's Wii gore-fest a rating, effectively banning it in the UK. Gamers weren't happy.

"It seems a shame that the game's manufacturer have decided to exclusively release this game on the Wii. I believe it will spoil the family fun image of the Wii," Bayer originally said.

Now in a newsletter post the mediawatch-UK man moans about the angry e-mails he received from gamers.

"Within hours of these remarks being published a rain of hostile emails from gamers poured into our office telling us to 'shut the f*** up', suggesting that we have 'got our knickers in a twist', demanding, as though we were on trial for an heinous crime, to know what right we had to impose our 'narrow minded bigotry' on them and stopping them playing an 'adult' game of their choice," he said.

"Others, of a more sober character, asked reasonably why we should be so concerned about games when there was so much violence in films and on television! We were also accused us of being 'cowards' for not responding properly to belligerent strictures and one 'emailer' observed glibly that 'violent acts are not a symptom of video games and films, but rather the human condition'.

Bayer went on to criticise articles in games mags, "grossly exaggerating the significance of our comments". "It is evident from this that the battle for standards has rather shifted away from television towards games and the internet," he said.

If you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen...

Thanks, Game Politics

They deserved it.

I am of the opinion that slapping an 18 certificate on a game means that it should be up to the adult themselves whether they should be allowed to play it or not.

But they should know as well as anyone that banning something doesn't help. There's always an alternative way to get it if you really want. And in that case you're screwing the government out of a taxable product. There is no winner.
Dajmin on 12 Nov '08
Yep, they did.

On other news if you get a thing from Datel (the makers of the action replay) called the freeloader you can unlock play region locked games.
Dragonahcas on 12 Nov '08
What was he expecting. a harty congratulations for for taking away what looks like an interesting piece of entertainment from everyone.

Think nintendo probably sent him the one to shut the f**k up. They contacted Rockstar and expressly asked them to put MAnhunt 2 on the machine. Same for No More Heroes. Shame it got cut to buggery in this country.
WHERESMYMONKEY on 12 Nov '08
Being banned over its content is not the issue, its the fact that they want it banned because it's on Wii and they say it will ruin the Wii's "family image" is the reason why gamers are upset. If it was on 360 or PS3 this wouldn't of been an issue.
YCshinobi on 12 Nov '08
ok so this guy has basically said.... *ahem* "He got PWNED!"

I was expecting to say he got death threats or something.

I thought that was now disabled after a Wii update? - would love to get my US No More Heroes working!

haven't updated mine so it'll always work. untill datel bring out a new version (hopefully)

MadWorld looks great, but as a Wii exclusive I think they made the right decision. If you own a Wii, you are buyin into their family gaming image. If you bought it for games like MadWorld, you've bought the wrong console.

I don't know - it shouldn't really be like that, surely?

I mean - when you buy a Wii you know that you're getting Mario, Zelda, Animal Crossing and the like...you likely also understand Nintendos' values when it comes to game content - but, I don't think that this should apply to all developers.

Also, if Nintendo had made the decision to not have Madworld on their console because of the content - that's fine, it's their console, their image. It's definitely not the decision of some Watchdog commitee that know nothing about games or what gamers like.

That's not their decision to make on our behalf. I own the console (for now) and I want it. If it gets rated 18 then families wouldn't be picking it up. Godfather and Scarface both got released on Wii with 18 certificates, both sold pretty well.
You wouldn't be happy if you went to buy a car and the dealership told you that you weren't allowed it.

I'd place any amount of money on the fact that if it was on either of the other consoles nobody would have said a word about it.

Do Watchdogs receive anything other than hostile emails??
Snap_Boglin on 12 Nov '08
So games like MP3 and Resi 5 count towards this 'family fun' image hmm? Sorry but if Nintendo want to release other games that aren't 'family fun' on the Wii it's up to them not the Daily Mail or others.

Nintendo yes have found the family 'niche' but at a cost of losing it's older core gamers, by not allowing Nintendo to have titles out of that niche you'll efectivly kill the console for future growth past that and those 'family fun' players WILL grow out of that niche for sure..

Whats next Viva Pinyata 'not allowed' on the 360? Are we going to pigeonhole all formats now?

Unfortunately. they also get emails from senile bastards who haven't got anything to do all day except chase children away from their barey-there gardens, and pretend to have watched a programme just so they make a complaint about it.

for the love of god, yes the Wii has family, friends games, like Mariokart's like others been advertised, but that does not make it a family-fun games consoles, as pointed out u can get lots of adult games if u so wish.one of the major pluses of Ninty's consoles over the years is the multiplayer modes that's whats made a lot of games stand out,but equally u can get a sports games, take SSMB u can play it a lot 1 player "omg how much is there to do" but it turns into a great game mulitplayer,so will all you greystation fans a xbox360 fans stop going on about this image, and lets face it this country turned its back on family life along time ago broken lol,It is a machine for all apart from the souless

People have opinions, I used to have a Wii and got borred of it. I now think its crap and have a PS3...That dose in no way make me, or anyone else, 'soulless'.
wiikii007 on 12 Nov '08
I have had nearly all the consoles over the last 20 years and I think out of all the consoles I had played the Wii is the one I have touched the least. I played it long enough to complete Zelda and then didnt really see anything else that catches my eye.

Mario - Not interested, hes been going on for too long, the story is always the same just the setting changes. I am not saying it is a bad game I just cant be bothered with the usual "Peach has been kidnapped (again) Mario has to save her for no reason" the poor little guy doesnt even get laid for his efforts. Sad

Smash Bros - Button mashing and controller waggling gets old fast if you dont have people to enjoy the game with.

Anyway, why do people still use the word "Greystation" when it hasnt been grey for about 10 years?

I still find it funny how every discussion has to turn into a fanboy war.

What is that watchdogs e-mail address? Twisted Evil
seancuk23 on 13 Nov '08
"UK watchdog got "hostile emails" from gamers"

aww,diddums. y'ok?

cause and effect: don't threaten to ban/censor games that are aimed at 18 year olds up and you don't get hostile e-mails. simple really.

btw: free radical are running a poll on their site asking what type of game you'd like to see them do on the wii.

the wii won the timesplitters 4 poll last month (no sh!t),so there's a chance-just a chance that it could come to wii.

get over there and vote, don't do nothing other than sit there and complain that 3rd parties don't give a f*ck. (er...guilty Embarassed )
ste hicky on 13 Nov '08
Sending emails with the words 'Shut the f*uck up' hardly sends the right message across though does it. Surely people can frame a proper argument without resulting to petty name calling and pointless cursing.
potnoodle1 on 13 Nov '08
Greystation" when it hasnt been grey for about 10 years?
That must be an old one, before my time at least. These names do make me laugh though so keep them coming Laughing

Seriously I like the way this goes, we go we have a right to choose what we want to play because of freedom, and yet when someone exercises their freedom of speech that disagrees with us, they should STFU?

I am pleased they mentioned some emails wanted a constructive debate rather than highlighting only the bad stuff.

Its the last time they say anything about games though Wink

Its not that we want him to STFU (well we do actually) but what has happened is he has said his opinion, which resulted in the game being banned.
This is the breach of the the freedom to play what we want, should you wish to use that term.
He is allowed to disagree, but when he disagrees and it gets banned then we have a problem lol

Mediawatch are a self-appointed group. Self-appointed groups are essentially Ned Flanders, sitting in front of his TV reviewing a stack of tapes looking for things to complain about, explaining his actions as "Imploring people I have never met to pressure a government with better things to do to punish a man who meant no harm for something nobody even saw!"
