Nintendo: No Wii successor any time soon

US boss says Wii "has a long run ahead of it"
Nintendo has no plans to release a new home console any time soon, according to the president of the company's US arm.

"We believe the role of a new console, a new system, is to bring great new entertainment ideas to life. We launched (the Wii and DS) those systems when we had great ideas that would benefit either from a touch screen or from a Wii remote," Reggie Fils-Aime told Reuters.

"We will consider the launch of new consoles when we have got great new entertaining ideas that can only be done with a new console. As we sit here today the Wii console has a long run ahead of it, (the DS too).

"At some point we will launch the DSi here in the Americas. So as we look at the near term for us its all about maximizing the opportunity with the (Wii and DS)."

Fair enough. The Wii's selling like hot cakes, so why would Nintendo announce that it's planning on releasing a successor any time soon?

Still, we bet it's working on one behind closed doors, or perhaps a Wii HD upgrade.

"No Wii successor any time soon"

It's not shocking that they want to milk this one for all they can before spending development time on a replacement. The danger with that will be convincing all the people who own a Wii to buy the Wii 2, and I still don't think they'll do it.

However, in my house I think a PS3 is going to be my Wii's successor when I trade it in Smile

So what was the 'great new idea' the 'Cube had over the the N64? Just curious. Small discs maybe?
_Marty_ on 14 Nov '08
More like ""We will consider the launch of new consoles when everybody on the planet has already got a Wii, and sales are near zero."
ginsin on 14 Nov '08

LOL! Doubt it. More like when the Wii stops selling.
mfnick on 14 Nov '08
OK, so what are they going to do for their next trick if they only want to innovate? Thought motion? I think ill hit the ball, I will hit the ball.

Ill put hard earned money on a Wii HD within 2 years.

You can fool some of the people all of the time and you can fool all of the people some of the time but you can't fool all of the people all of the time (unless your Nintendo, in that case you just print money).

just last night i nearly finished twighlight princess and i might as well have been playing my old gamecube. even on my hd tv with hd cables, what the wii needs more than anything is hdmi output. i have to say though i'm a sucker for new technology and i will buy any new consol any of the big 3 release. my dream, a brand new Atari or Sega consol.

I think a bit like the Wii, the Gamecube was Nintendos first attempt making semi-affordable hardware. It also introduced online play (well a little of it), and was supposed to be easier to develop for than the N64.
Hobophobik on 14 Nov '08
Didn't they say that there were no plans for a new DS a week before they announced the New DSi?
Suivatam109PS3 on 14 Nov '08
I lol @ how the Nintendo reps said back in September that there will be a shortage in Wiis this Christmas again.

Heres a truly insane idea for you: How about, you know, actually making more? Crazy thought, I know, but it really does help.

I mean seriously, they have had well over 300 days to keep making the Wii for Christmas, so dont give us the bullsh*t that the Wii is that popular they sell out everywhere.
Dragonahcas on 14 Nov '08
Personally, I don't want to see a seccessor any time soon. HD version? Not sure if I am really fussed right now.
kimoak on 14 Nov '08
Anybody stop to think what the HD stands for. It might not be an entirely new console just something to beef up the current one.

Considering Nintendos history for bolting extra bits onto thier machines it wouldn't be at all surpriising.

The obvious definition of HD would be high definition, However that could also stand for Hard Drive,

Makes sense considering the disk drive for the n644 was called the 64DD.
WHERESMYMONKEY on 14 Nov '08
Except for Hard Drive is usualy HDD - Hard Disc Drive.
mfnick on 14 Nov '08
I'm think the next console will be called a Wiid

LOL!
dragontorc on 14 Nov '08
It should be called the Wii're Sorry.
Dajmin on 14 Nov '08
Thank God. I haven't got my money's worth out of the Wii yet.
I've been very happy with all the first party titles I was expecting, now I want fresh new games with bloody decent motion controls.
RumbleThunder on 14 Nov '08
When are the new colours coming? The background picture on the news story reminded me. That will be the big new thing.
me4pd on 14 Nov '08
If it really is a completely new console it'll just come out with the PS4 and Xbox 720 (or whatever they're going to be called).
trgmr on 14 Nov '08
I'd love to finally get my moneys worth out of the Wii. Though unless a bunch of good Zelda games come out I doubt I will. Even games I originally looked forward to like Animal Crossing I have gone off just because of the controller.

you lot are just angered that the Wii is doing so well, we've had to put up with playstation rule everywhere we weren't all behaving like spolit little children/throwing a tantrum. whatever the new console is about u can be sure, Nintendo will do something that is new diffrent innovate sums up the Company.
stormchasing1000 on 14 Nov '08
I think the gamecubes innovation was trigger buttons that work even though they feel like they shouldn't, oh and an extra analog stick
greatno on 14 Nov '08

You misunderstood the comment, the 'great ideas' are the games. One example is pikmin. it needed more horsepower and a second analogue stick to function properly. In addition, many titles required more space than cartridges allowed.(so the 1.5 gig mini discs became necessary)

I'm not angered that its successful, I'm angered at what a complete piece of cheap s**t it is.

Prior to the wii I was a complete Nintendo whore. I stupidly stuck by the GCN right until the end, and just prior to that I knew things were going astray when things like Starfox Assault and Double Dash were average/rubbish at best.

The word Nintendo used to be synonomous with quality. Genuine games that were truly great. And I'm sorry, but having been a purist for years and years, the wii sucks balls and no matter how hard I try, I can't like it.

When a company that brought us greats like Ocarina of Time and Mario 64 start spewing crap like Wii music and Wii Sports Resort and try to market them as system shifters, you know all hope is lost.

I can't vouch for sports resort(haven't played it, obviously) but after hands on time with wii music, I can say it is definitely a quality game, just much different then other titles.

Wii music is not the type of game you can get a good feel for with screenshots/videos, it takes a bit of time and experimentation.

I do NOT expect the Wii HD or Wii 2 to arrive within two years, by fall 2010. However I do believe it will arrive within 3 to 4 years, in either 2011 or 2012.

I'd expect the new console to be more than merely a Wii that renders & outputs in HD resolution with a few new features, but rather, a true next-gen Nintendo console with hardware performance that surpasses Xbox 360 & PS3 even if its not as powerful as the next-gen Xbox & PS4. I'd expect the equivalent of an AMD-ATI RV770 GPU (Radeon 4870) in graphics, well beyond the Xenos GPU in 360 and RSX GPU in PS3. A full 1 GiB RAM. That would mean a HUGE leap over Wii in visuals, about one and a half console generations ahead of Wii, given that Wii uses ten year old graphics tech...GameCube graphics (Flipper) was developed in the late 90s, Wii graphics (Hollywood) is just a speed bump + minor tweaks.

Nintendo will again focus on what controls Wii 2 games, going beyond what the Wii Remote with MotionPlus can do. Yet also remaining fully BC with Wii games, which means built-in MotionPlus in the Wii2 controller, on top of whatever new capabilities Nintendo comes up with.
