360 to surpass all-time Xbox 1 sales

Console to reach 25 million this month, says Microsoft
Microsoft expects the Xbox 360's install base to exceed 25 million units by the end of November, it's said, surpasing the all-time sales of the original Xbox.

"By the end of this month, we expect our global installed base to reach 25 million units, surpassing that of the first Xbox," said Mindy Mount, CFO of the Xbox business, at the BMO Capital Markets Interactive Entertainment Conference.

Mount said that the milestone was "only a start" because "more than three-quarters" of a console's sales are made when the system falls to the sweet spot of $199 - the price of the entry-level Arcade 360 - or lower, Edge reports.

According to Microsoft, recently introduced 360 price cuts saw Xbox sales jump 42% month-on-month in the States, 62% in Europe and 500% in Japan.

My second 360 crapped out a few days ago, my garantee expired long ago, so getting a new one will be cheaper at this time. Looks like I'll be helping M$ reach their goal.
Little Moth on 14 Nov '08
Good figures for MS but it just goes to show how much of a behemoth the Wii is.

I think we have our winner this gen with the Wii and to be honest I think that MS and Sony will probably end up with about the same marketshare in a few years time. For MS thats a deffo improvement but Sony have dropped the ball ever so slightly and I dont think we'll see any console hitting the heights of the PS2 this gen anyway.
StonecoldMC on 14 Nov '08
Just a question. How many of those 25 million still work? Also, how many of them will still be working at the end of the generation?
I don't mind the 360, in fact it's a good console with many great games, but even my friend will admit now after his almighty unbreakable Elite packed in on him that the 360 is a shoddy piece of hardware. It would be interesting to see the true extent of the RROD and the newer (and not covered by warranty according to Microsoft) black screen of death where all video feeds go dead permanently. I'm sure as hell that those 25 mil include replacements. I'd loved to be proved wrong. Because 25 mil without replacements is quite an achievement.
wrightandrewjame on 14 Nov '08
Can ask the same question about any console though - for instance what about the problems the PS2 had with its disk drive, and the amount of different hardware versions that people upgraded to through its life?

That's pretty good going. It's surpassed the xbox1 & the Gamecube that means. It has quite a way to go if it wants to surpass the total number of PS2's sold though. Razz

Well lets just hope Microsoft dont drop this like they did with the xbox 1 and leave all their users high and dry again hey!

I think you'll find that was a very smart move indeed by M$ & not doing this with the PS2 is something that really damaged PS3 sales. Neutral
Wow did i read this correctly?
It people like you that helps damge the gaming world as we know it.
Hardcore gamers dont want to go and and dispose their hard earned money on machines that dont get supported properley by the company that created it in the first place.
Ps3 sales are also damaged because Microsoft released the 360 far to soon and once again the consumer(me included) paid the price on shoddy machines in the case of the famous Red ring of death.I love the 360 and i loved the xbox 1 but when i either see a console not supported(Xbox 1)
or a rip of machine(Nintendo Wii/gamecube with motion controllers)
It gets me a little frustrated and im sure im not the only one who feels this way.
Bottom line.
By the way a3HeadedMonkey you are a gamer you dont work for Microsoft...Or do you?
either way your an idiot who only makes this situation worse and i hate what you stand for.

If the next Xbox is a quantum leap technology and gaming wise over the 360, then I couldn't give a s**t about gaming support for the 360. If devs think it's still a viable proposition then they'll create games for it as they do with the PS2.

And as "Mr monkey with many heads",says, releasing a new machine but still supporting the predecessor is only counter productive to the new machines take-up and just confuses consumers!

Bring on the next Xbox, which I'm sure will debut sooner than many people think.

I have to agree, if MS hadn't pressured sony by releasing early, then sony would not have felt the need to release the ps3 for several years, and we would still be playing with the ps2.

MS screwed up on reliability of the 360, but it's still a great console and it's pushed gaming on, especially online.

Technology needs to move on, and as much as i love my amiga 500 and miss it soooo much, i wouldn't want to go back, i can't wait for the next gen' to arrive, with all the excitement and promise of better games, bring it on.

Couple of points there, Sony started development of the PS3 before Microsoft started on the Xbox360. Microsoft pushed the development of the 360 in order to release it before the PS3. If anything Microsoft were pressurised by Sony. I'm not so sure either if the people buying a PS2 now would buy a PS3 if the PS2 was discontinued. Odds are they would buy a Wii. You can also bet that the next generation Playstation and Xbox have already been developed.

Microsoft need to stick with their current console a while longer and im sure they will otherwise they will become another company creating software if they are lucky.

it crazy to hear people saying they are on their 3rd console, not just here ive heard several people saying the same thing, in addition people selling 360 to go ps3. I do think its disgusting the shear amount of people having to repair/sell/rebuy a 360 just because its shoddy. what amazes me more is people still do it
anagi on 15 Nov '08
Wow, I've had my 360 for a year now and I still havn't had the RRoD. That said I do get the occasional freezin but nothing that ruins the Xbox experience...oh I'm afraid my 360s going to suddenly freeze days before my birthday (when I get Gears!)
BrOkEbRoKe on 15 Nov '08
I remember the days of playing Halo, fighting the flood and playing Battlefront 2 for 18 hours with my friends. My xbox was my pride and joy, but the 360 has taken those experiences and multiplied them 100x. I've played on all 3 of the current gen consoles and I just know deep down the 360 is just something special. I'd like to see the 360 to go on for bigger achievements in the future.

perhaps its a bit like alfa romeo, not very reiable but thats why people love them so Very Happy. if alfa's were bullet proof they would lose a lot of their charm but a reliable 360 would be a godsend.

I didn't care when MS drop the Xbox 1 as I am not the type who buys a console 4 years after it was introduced. Those people are cheap skates and I'd bet their attach rate is LOW and mostly used games. Why cater to them? The RROD is a joke but the 360s success says SOOO much about the PS3s failings. Price, Blu Ray and no games are the clear reason they are being beaten by a poorly built, hot, loud and defective machine. Price, games and LIVE are what has made the 360 successful and soon the ability to watch Netflix movies as well. Netflix is a choice SONY so next time think about choices before you cram a lame pointless format down our throats. Had Blu Ray come out when HD TVs came out maybe but it's too late and to close to downloadable content now for me. That coupled with the fact that the movies they put on BR are aimed right at 12 year old boys or 30 year old losers who still think Transformers are cool.

Why exactly are they cheapskates? Someone buys 2 consoles, plays them loads and doesn't buy the other because there's no point paying huge for a console you only want a few games for. So you wait for it to be cheap and then pick up a few classics. It's common sense...
As for the attach rate and pre-owned games-true. But if someone likes the old console they will have a higher change of buying the newest console. It makes sense to at least keep them happy.

and RROD is clear evidence Microsoft rushed the 360's release.
voodoo341 on 16 Nov '08
Something that'd been bugging me for age is that Microsoft must have known about this problem as they put in red lights in the machine with the expressed purpose of telling you it's broken, right? So surely they knew it was broken when they released it?
BrOkEbRoKe on 16 Nov '08
Obviously people have had some serious problems with the RROD, but people hype it up way more then they should be. 360's aren't dropping dead like they did when they first came out. I've had mine for (gasp) 2 years and it still going just fine. Only one person I know had their 360 RROD on them and that was mainly due to the fact they had it in an poorly ventilated glass case where it overheated.

Ok, Einstein please do explain to me why Sony's competition would offer backwards compatibility for the ps2! Confused

It would make more sense for Sony to offer compatibility with the 360 given the extensive library of A+ games available on the xbox.

Can ask the same question about any console though - for instance what about the problems the PS2 had with its disk drive, and the amount of different hardware versions that people upgraded to through its life?

I sold my original PS2 the other day - never had any problems with it - and I bought it about 4 months after launch (Whenever GT3 came out)... Despite throwing it on the floor a few times (due to tripping over controller wires) and having it vertical or horizontal - playing copious amounts of DVD's and plent of gaming hours - it was still rocking - with the original controller...

I think it crashed about twice in it's life - both on GTA:SA.
