Halo Wars lead designer Graeme Devine says that, rather than draw influence from recent console RTS games, he found they showed him and his team what NOT to do.
"What we've seen before on console is that people try to take a PC game and port it to a console," Devine explained.
"You end up with a half-way hybrid. There are a lot of things that we saw that were wrong - that we noted NOT to do," he went on to state.
"I don't think anyone's done good console strategy games before. I think there's only been a few examples of what's worked out there," added a confident Devine, specifying Nintendo's Pikmin and Megadrive RTS Hertzog Zwei (erm... us neither) as the only two that have done console RTS properly.
Halo Wars is due out early next year. Check out the full interview right here, in which Devine explains why he believes Halo Wars is the first pure-breed console RTS.
It really depends. There's a few good games, it's just the controls that let them down. One of the things that bugs me about console games is that you can't assign custom controls (like the ChatPad for 360, for example, would make a lot of games easier).
So it's about finding a decent control method. Once you've got that down, half the battle is over.
The Endwar demo was okay, but it's not practical for me since my girlfriend would laugh at me chatting to a bunch of AI units It also feels too small-scale. Dawn of War has hundreds of units running around, and you can't control that well with any of the current methods.
I could be wrong, but I think that "Megadrive RTS Hertzog Zwei" was actually the very first RTS game (well, certainly the one that has all the elements that are considered part of RTS these days; based building, resource management, unit building, etc), I think it came out the year before Dune II
From what the previews say your spot on ,and has anyine actually bought endwar being clancy i`d have thought it would sell like hotcakes but 1:the demo really put me off and 2: o`ve heard absolutley nothing about it ,in fact is it out????? i`ll have to look
Hertzog Zwei!!! Blimey that brings back memories! It was a pretty damn solid Strategy game. I loved that game when I was a kid. Well ahead of it's time when I think back to it now. Oh and Dune2 was pretty reasonable too.
