Treyarch-developed Call of Duty: World at War has become the third fastest selling game ever in the UK, behind only GTA IV and GTA San Andreas.
The WWII shooter, which is at least one bookie's favourite for the Christmas No1 spot, outsold last year's CoD offering, Modern Warfare, by more than 2 to 1 in its first week to top the UK chart.
If you haven't bought the game and still need convincing, you should definitely check out these exclusive movies and our review.
WaW was followed at No2 by World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King, which has become the fastest selling PC title, according to Chart-Track.
Football Manager 2009 debuted at No3, becoming the quickest selling title in the series in the process.
Gears of War 2 slipped three places to No4 following a 64% drop in sales, while FIFA 09 dropped three spots to No5.
Guitar Hero: World Tour jumped from No17 to No6 thanks to the launch of the complete band packs, while Professor Layton and Mario Kart Wii each fell one place, to No7 and No8 respectively.
Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 and WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2009 rounded off the top ten.
Wii Music and Mirror's Edge made disappointing starts, debuting at No16 and No20, while Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts failed to make the top 40. Oh dear.

hopefully the country sends a clear message to nintendo by continuing not to buy Wii music in large numbers that we are not idiots who have money to throw down the drain. as for mirrors edge i think a lot of people are unsure on this and are holding out for used copys, i know i am.
I won't be picking up W@W either. I seem to be about the only person in the world who didn't actually like the beta.
I played the Mirror's Edge demo and while it was okay, I actually found it a little frustrating. Maybe it's just because you need to hit the buttons in-step, but it felt like QTEs without the on-screen prompts.
As for Wii Music... I'm not even going to go into that. Safe to say my Wii is about to be traded in.
Well it was on every system available (well almost), wasnt it? Still fair play to them, Treyarch seemed to be getting it pretty tight from lots of people so hopefully this will give them a bit of breathing space.
I think though that this one is going to pass me by until the sales in January, L4D is out on Friday and that is my most anticipated shooter this Xmas, im trying to stay away from Reviews/Previews but its hard, its really hard.

Don't worry about the reviews its currently riding over 90% at game rankings.
If you played the demo you'll already know its the mutts nuts anyway.
COD:WAW is a great game. the settings dont feel overly WWII at all, and the graphics have the nice polished feel to them. does the COD4 engine proud i say.
i was amazed at how well it stands up to modern warfare. the people turning their noses up at this purely because its WWII "setting" deserve to miss out. its great fun and the settings far from disappoint or bore, they are varied and impressive.
the opening level at midnight with the palm trees is really impressive.
It's utterly depressing that yet another WWII shooter is selling so well.
Seriously, I was bored of that five years ago...
what a moron.
how come noone ever says they are bored of contemporary shooters?
youve all probably played more contemporary shooters than WWII shooters.
if a game is done well, its done well. doesnt matter the era in which its set. the guns can be every bit as lethal as the guns in MW. also it isnt half as "grey" as you'd think (just cause its WWII).
Pretty much as expected then! People seem to just eat up anything c.o.d related. Mirrors Edge was never going to be a hit in the first place! It's quite simply boring! I'm not even going to mention the ......

Nice assumptions, but I'm also pretty much bored of contemporary shooters.
I actually find FPS in general to be the most immature genre in existence, despite being classed as mature...

there nothing immature about FPS games. just the little bastards on xbox live shouting crap over their mics and running about mindlessly.
when played tactfully FPS' are the best type of game out there. its just a lot of people ruin it with their antics. private matches, played at a slower pace are more satisfying than the run and gun nature which most people play COD like.
where the bloody hell is LBP in that top ten? Looks like shooters are here to stay. nevermind, I bloody love shooters me. (chav and proud)
LBP is selling nicely. It's crossed the 1 million mark and isn't far behind Fable 2 now. With 84,000 user designed levels uploaded since launch it'll be fine.

World at War is really good. Still can't beat the CoD series for atmosphere. Granted I only played it for 2-3 hours so far because I got Mirror's Edge on Friday as well and that had me occupied for the weekend. Had 2 playthroughs under my belt by Sunday night... one on medium, no weapons, one on hard with weapons. Very satisfying. It's excellent, pity it's not higher on the charts. It certainly deserves it.
Quite depressing really. The COD series was regarded as one of the finest amongst FPS games until it was raped by these yearly updates. Don't get me wrong, the Infinity Ward games are great, especially COD4, which really took the series into new territory, but going back to WW2 again? It's just a step back in the wrong direction for this series. Thanks but no thanks. Tons of FPS games are bad enough but when you keep getting WW2 forced down your throat time and time again, well it just gets old. I'd much rather something like LBP, Mirror's Edge or even Banjo got #1. Oh well, on the bright side, I'd rather this than Fifa 09 or NFS getting #1...

Well said, this whole * it's ww2 so i'm not getting it* nonsense is ridiculous.
Cod4 is not great because it's in a modern setting, it's great because it's a great game, end of.

I'm stunned that their are only 2 people on here that thought the demo ...... sorry beta (shhherrr right!) wasn't up to snuff. I adore CoD4, I love WWII games, but WaW just didn't make the grade for me, and I still cannot put a finger on why.
Oh well, never mind. It'll get dropped kicked off the number 1 spot next week when L4D sweeps away all before it. ALL HAIL THE INFECTION!!!
people are forgetting that the call of duty series is supposed to be set in the 2nd world war......modern warfare was a break from the norm.
Treyarch have been clever and used the best of both worlds...the brutality and realism of WW2 with the clever engine and multiplayer skills from COD4..............a good game is a good game and COD W&W is a good game.

It's also dropped from 4th place to 19th after it's first week on sale, I wonder where it'll be next week?
It's a real shame about Banjo, as I think it's a great little game. Having said that, I only know about it because I loved the originals, follow CVG and also happen to work in a games store. Microsoft really let Rare down on this one - Professor Layton sold well on DS because Nintendo blitzed us with TV adverts, whereas Banjo...well, has anyone seen any promotion for it at all? I haven't.
Rare make some great games, but I really doubt how much success they can enjoy at home on Xbox 360. They don't make generic, safe games, but the problem is, that's exactly what 360 gamers go for (not a criticism of the console - I love it). A platformer isn't going to sell well on a machine dominated by guns and realism, especially if no one even knows it's out.
Microsoft seem keen to target the 'casual' market, but they don't seem to want to push their key games enough to satisfy this, which I find odd. Viva Pinata only sold a decent number (just) because it was bundled with consoles - and as a freebie. I can see Banjo suffering a similar fate.
Balls, Treyarch make millions becasue of the success of IW's game, and publuishers are even less likely to take risks, ME not succeding quite as well as one would've hoped.
