Aliens: Colonial Marines "isn't canned"

Gearbox shoots down rumours of Colonial cancellation
Gearbox president Randy Pitchford has denied rumours that the developer's squad-based first-person shooter Aliens: Colonial Marines has been cancelled.

Pitchford moved to deny cancellation rumours after both Kotaku and ShackNews, citing "multiple sources", reported that the Sega project had been axed, along with a number of staff at the developer.

"Aliens isn't canned," said Pitchford. "We've made some transformative changes and yes, that's meant some talent changes, but that's not the real story. The true relevance of the story will actually be irrelevant until we release our next game, at which time I hope there will be a lot of interest in what we've done that can produce such results."

He also said that the game "is very exciting and I look forward to the right moment we can more fully unveil our efforts there".

That's certainly good news, but Pitchford didn't offer any clues about when the game might actually be released.

The PS3, 360 and PC title will feature a story driven single-player mode and a four player co-op mode when it finally launches, and will see you play a member of a United States Colonial Marine squad that goes off to face the extraterrestrial assault from the brilliant Alien movies.

Wasn't this meant to be out end of this year, beginning of next? Sounds like it'll be a Q3-Q4 release now... *sigh*

I don't care as long as it's good. All the ingredients are there, they just have to cook it right (unlike Alien resirection which had marines, new aliens, a queen, a buffed up Ripley and still the film sucked balls!).

Good to see the reports aren't true as i'm really looking forward to this one. Hopefully it'll be a great game when launched as there's never really been a truly outstanding aliens game i've ever played.

thank f**k its not been canned. i've high hopes for this game, haven't played a good aliens game since the original AvP on the jaguar. oh aye and the alien trilogy game from the saturn/ps1, but that wasn't the greatest of games. i have to make do with an emulation of the old Aliens arcade game from Konami (yes the one where Ripley has blond hair) for my xenomorph killing fantasy's

'Talent changes'. Laughing My God, the industry truly is going down the pan if the boss of a (previously) respectable independent studio like Gearbox is starting to speak in the tongue of the suit.

Hey AvP on the PC was excellent. Working your way down a corridor when your motion sensor beeping was wicked, and frantically throwing flares whilst trying to shoot an Alien off of the ceiling was pure gold.

Buggrit! That means it's been canned.

Next we'll hear that it's been delayed or "re-prioritised".

Are those screenshots for real? They look pathetic and there's me hoping this will turn out to be something awesome.

Screens? I only see one. Anyway, no it isn't.

You see, there was actually a previous game called "Aliens: Colonial Marines" (completely unconnected, other than the name and franchise), which was in development for the PS2 back in 2001. That one did get canned.

For some reason, CVG have decided to post a screen of that game, rather than the newer one Rolling Eyes.
