New PS3 firmware due tomorrow

Web browser updates and menu tweaks for 2.53
PlayStation.com sends word that the next PS3 firmware update, version 2.53 will be broadcast across the PlayStation Network tomorrow.

Among the changes in 2.53 is full screen support for Flash videos, power save options to stop your controllers dieing out and "the playback quality of some PlayStation 3 format software has been improved," whatever that means.

Apparently, the account creation screen for PSN has also been redesigned, as you can see here.

See the full change list below:

Users
  • You now have an option to set the PS3 system to turn off automatically after a background download or installation of content has completed. This option is available when you turn off the system under [Users] > [Turn Off System] while content is being downloaded or installed.

Settings
  • [BD/DVD Settings] has been renamed to [Video Settings].
  • [Under [Video Settings], the [Cinema Conversion] option has been renamed to [BD/DVD Cinema Conversion] and the [Upscale] option has been renamed to [BD/DVD Upscaler].
  • [ [Sequential Playback] has been added as an option under [Video Settings].
  • [ [DivX VOD Registration Code] has been added under [System Settings]. You must use this registration code to authenticate and register the PS3 system to be able to play video files that are compatible with the DivX VOD (Video On Demand) service on your system. For details, visit the DivX website.
  • [ [Power Save Settings] has been added as an option under [Settings]. To save power, the PS3 system and wireless controllers can be set to turn off automatically after a certain period of inactivity.
  • [Under [Accessory Settings] > [Audio Device Settings], the method for reconnecting Bluetooth devices has been changed.
  • [Under [Accessory Settings] > [Keyboard Type], you can now choose the following keyboard types: [German Keyboard (Switzerland)], [French Keyboard (Canada)] and [French Keyboard (Switzerland)].
  • [Under [Printer Settings] > [Printer Selection], you can now select printers that support network connectivity. You can also select HP printers using the [HP] option.

Music
  • [You can now select one of nine volume output levels using the [Volume Control] setting on the control panel (or the mini-size control panel).
  • [Pause] has been added as an icon on the mini-size control panel.

Video
  • [You can now select one of nine volume output levels using the [Volume Control] setting on the control panel.
  • [ [Scene Search] has been added as an option on the control panel.
  • [You can now use the [Mosquito Noise Reduction] setting for video content that is saved on the hard disk or storage media. Use this setting to reduce mosquito noise that appears on the edges of visual images.
  • [During BD (BDAV) and DVD playback, a technique known as "chroma upsampling" is now automatically selected based on the movement of objects within the video content and then applied to enhance images in the content.

Game
  • [New for 2.52: The playback quality of some PLAYSTATION3 format software has been improved.
  • [New for 2.52: A text entry issue that occurs when using the on-screen keyboard, USB keyboard or Bluetooth keyboard with some PLAYSTATION3 format software has been addressed.
  • [ [Sync with Server] has been added as an option under [Trophy Collection].
  • [By pressing the PS button while playing PLAYSTATION3 format software, you can now view information from the [Settings and Connection Status List] option under [Network Settings].*
    * This feature is not available for use with some PLAYSTATION3 format software.

Network
  • [New for 2.53: The Internet browser now supports full-screen mode for Adobe Flash Player content.*
  • [Support for Adobe Flash Player 9 has been added to [Internet Browser].*

PlayStationNetwork
  • [The way to disable the automatic sign-in option and the way to sign out from PlayStationNetwork have been changed.
  • [In PlayStationStore, the design of the [View Downloads] and [View Cart] buttons has been changed, and a [Redeem Codes] button has been added.

Friends
  • [You can now view information about the most recent sign-in for Friends who are on your Friends list.*
    * If you do not set the correct date and time in the [Date and Time] settings under [Settings] > [Date and Time Settings], this information may not be displayed.

Will wait and see if it bricks PS3's like most of the others.

Having had it happen twice I just don't trust Sony to get it right first time.

Surely this will just address some minor issues? The 0.0x updates tend to be nothing major -- the 0.x ones are the biggies, so we won't have anything big until 2.60, surely?

My suggestion for a future fix would be improved anti-aliasing. Get rid of those damn jaggies, Sony!

It doesn't fix any issues. It just updates the Adobe Flash Player. If you dont use the web browser on the PS3 it's of no real interest.

Confused What the hell is your problem? It's a bit hypocritical to complain about Sony fanboys talking bollocks on 360 articles and then turning round and doing the exact same thing here.

Err, yes it did!! Im a big fan of the PS3 and the overall package, but the BRD worked perfectly before the Update and not at all afterwards, coincidence?

Sony Spain admitted that there was a problem with early 40GB and 60GB machines and that the drive reading problem could happen at any time, watching films, playing games.

Its strange though that a FW update that supposedly upgraded the BR drive options, would be a complete coincidence that it didnt work afterwards.

I’m just hoping I get the new one before Christmas, otherwise I will not be happy. What with LBP, Cod WAW and so on. I was hoping to get GTA IV finished before too, but that’s out the window now.

Still think people are lying, take a look here.

If there is any justice in the world, 2.53 will brick yours and then you will know how people feel, when Idiots like think people are MS fanboys when they are upset Sony Punters, Mug !!
Barca Azul on 26 Nov '08
It may just be me, but my PS3 runs videos, and the internet in general, quicker than my laptop or works PC! Madness.
Mark240473 on 26 Nov '08
well I realise how crap it must be if your system bricked but i was annoyed to see another bunch of sony bitching comments on ANOTHER psm forum. As far as I was aware there was only one update that caused serious problems and it didnt affect myself or any of my mates PS3's so when all the comments were about how Sooo many updates brick PS3's then I though...bollox. but of-course if you have had to send yours off thats pretty horrible, theres never been a better time to have one...but surely bricking mine is just mean ... justice would mean you have yours back for the holidays...am I right am I right!!!! Here here!!!....I dont think i was being hypocritical either...my biggest complaint to sony is the poor advertising. EVERY game that is multi-platform at the min has a bloody X-box bit at the end but no sony at the min (on tv I mean) stupid! the PS3 adds were stupid too!
Ginjaninge on 26 Nov '08
Does anyone else have this problem and if so how do you fix it?

I thought with Flash player on ps3 it meant you could now use BBC iplayer. However, when i try, it tells me Java script needs to be enabled. I go to tools and sure enough it says it is enabled!!!! So why doesn't it work.

Any help would be appreciated...
The_Angry_Badger on 26 Nov '08
Has anyone actually got this yet as Official Playstation page is still only showing 2.52.

Wanted to put it on flash disk at work to save me some time later on cos only ever update from usb now.

First off, I was tired and grumpy when I read your post. Secondly it’s a touchy subject for me. I would not wish anyone’s machine to brick (whatever make), its just not funny. There does seem to be an issue with Drive read issues in general from lots of people (Confirmed but Sony ES) and the last FW seemed to cause issues for a number of people, for one reason or another.

As for their advertising, last year I thought they didn’t want to sell the machine with the pretentious that’s living terrible adverts. This year, Id say ive seen probably 50 – 50 games on both systems in Spain at least and multi format too. Of course certain games are advertised more, Gears 2 being one and Mirrors edge, depends what money they are throwing at it and when. I expect to see a big ramp up in the next week or so in Europe.

I just hope I get my Machine soon, they said up to 20 days !! I think they should send me a new 80 GB machine with LBP for my troubles!!
Barca Azul on 26 Nov '08
EXACTLEY! I thought the "this is living" campaign was kinda cool...but only because i thought it must be a TEASER campaig, you know building up to them letting you know what is in the machine, what it does, all the cool features it has, Blue Ray for a freeking start...show some XMB clips of some one useing music, video, games, web, etc etc....They got a bit carried away with the whole abstract advertisement, the last people to do that successfully was "3" mobile phones, adverts never really made sense, but had an electric pace to them...then they had more related ads, with messaging and stuff shown in cool imaginative ways...Sony messed up there.

You should ask for at least some PS store credit like! Thats for sure!!!
