Ubisoft has made first official mention of the totally-unexpected sequel to last year's Assassin's Creed.
Speaking during its first-half fiscal 2008-09 conference call, a company exec confirmed that it's "working hard on the product," but wouldn't commit to a fiscal 2010 release date (i.e. next year) - although from what we've heard it's incredibly likely.
That's about it on the official side, but susperstar analyst Michael Pachter seems to have dropped more juicy details on Assassins 2, which he says has changed time frame from 1191 to "several hundred years in the future", specifically, "sometime in the 1700s."
Pachter went on to speculate that the French Revolution could be a potential setting for the sequel, which is infinitely more compelling to us than just more Jerusalem.
You may also remember that the Prince of Persia team let slip that Altair will be swimming in the next game.
What'll be interesting though is how Ubisoft manages Altair in the 1700s (if that is indeed where the sequel's taking place). Are we going to get a new assassin? A different descendent with the same name and clothes, ala Zelda? It'd be a shot in the foot for the company to waste the character it's spent so long establishing.

It would be an interesting one. Assassins Creed 2 ; the scarlet pinpinel.
I guess he could be dressed as some kind of friar. or period long coat type contraption.
Rapiers at the ready?
That's all well and good...and I'm sure it'll look amazing - but, do you think they could add some varied gameplay in there too?
Can't actually say that I'd be too excited - UbiSoft are not a company that I expect to really raise their standards, considering how well the first one sold. Most likely 'more of the same'.
EDIT: In fact, sod AC2...where's Splinter Cell: Conviction? - I'd take a Sam Fisher game over Altair, any day of the week.

I was hoping they would choose a new time setting for the sequel that was the only thing about AC i did'nt like. Not that it was bad just slightly dull. To be honest i wanted a more futureistic game that's where i think it'll shine with loads of cool futuristic tools and a giant metropolis to play in.
He will look the same because like the first one he relives what happend to his ancestors and he looked the same in the future and in the past all be it with different clothes on so expect it'll be the same.
I hope we actually get to do a bit more in the future setting this time and that the free running its a bit more complex than hold right trigger and A.
The original was a great game in my opinion, only let down by the repetition. I thought the actual gameplay mechanics were top-notch and enjoyable enough to balance out the repetitiveness... I played through it twice-and-a-bit.

So yes, high hopes here for the sequel.
Prince of Persia got two good reviews on Metacritic so far,its looking good for Assassin's sequel.
According to the "ending explained" article (I haven't played the game), a Japanese island was mentioned, hinting that could be the location for the second game.
Now Japan in the period up to the 1700s was still involved in tribal war (those who have played Shogun will know this). I think that would fit the style of the game well.

That would be interesting but wasn't Japan forbidden to foreigners in 17th century? Maybe there's some Japanese blood in the family. It would be a brilliant setting though.
I'm not up to scratch on the history of the place (I just love the architecture and design of the period), but surely a skilled infiltrator and assassin would find a way to sneak past any border guards
the only gripes i had with the game were the repetition yes, but the very boring cut-scene things everyone seems to be doing nowdays which you couldn't skip.
allow you to skip them and add a bit more variety and they'll be laughing. the first was immensly polished and very ambitious, they clearly spent their time on the game world and mechanics ( wish they'd kept the crossbow that would have been better than the throwing knives ) and the general mythology of the story and its obvious archs so hopefully they'll spend more time on varying it.

really didn't like the first one. it was awesome looking and the idea was class, but something wasn't right about it. way too repetitive as everyone else has said.

I really liked the first one. Just sucked me in. I like it when games spin a good tale and the first one didn't do a bad job.
Not sure what they'll do with it gameplay wise though.
loved the first one (yes i know it could be repetitive but if you used your imagination you could keep it fresh) don't be too confident of a new setting though - check out the 'egyptian expedition' part of this page - fits the time and place
Seen as you technically play as Desmond in the first game it's probably his character they've been building, and you'll probably play as him again as another character. That's what I think anyway.
it would be good if there was more emphasis on the bleeding through concept of the last one in the sequels. Number three doing away with the past entirely as desmond has finally become althair intent on destroying the templars latest plan.
I loved the first game so will gladly snap this up when it comes out.
As for it being set in the 1700's, I'm not so sure for 2 reasons.
1) How would pachter know this as he does not work for ubisoft
2) The ending from the last game strongely hinted that the location would be south america what with the nazca lines and the 21/12/12 date which is supposedly the end of the Mayan long court calender.
Time will tell but my money would be on the ancient maya being involved in some way.
The original was a great game in my opinion, only let down by the repetition. I thought the actual gameplay mechanics were top-notch and enjoyable enough to balance out the repetitiveness.
Completely agree with you. I still go back every now & again just to run around the rooftops. Definately my favourite way of getting around in a game.
Hopefully they iron out the repetitiveness for this one .
