Ex-Capcom Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami has said that he won't play Resident Evil 5.
Speaking in a recent interview with Official PlayStation magazine, Mikami, who's now working on games with ex-Capcom studio Platinum Games, said that playing Resi 5 would "just cause me stress".
"I probably won't play it. I won't like it, because it's not going to be the game I would have made," he said. "It'll just cause me stress if I play it. I think it could be fun for gamers to play it, but not for someone who has developed Resident Evil games.
"If I see anything in Resident Evil 5 that isn't done well, I'll be angry!"
On number five's similarities to Mikami's fourth Resi, he says "that's fine, isn't it? I think Resident Evil 5 doesn't need to change the series, but Resident Evil 6 will have to reinvent the series with another full model change or else it won't be able to keep on going."
Mikami's current projects are a joint Suda 51 horror game with EA and an unannounced game for Sega.
Mikami calls working on two projects at once "difficult", "but I'm director on my game for Platinum Games and producer on the game for EA. So if Suda does his job properly, my workload will decrease."
A demo of Resident Evil 5 is due on the Japanese PlayStation Network next week, and "a bit later" everywhere else.
As much as I love Mikami, I think it doesn't exactly show much confidence in the people he used to work with. Maybe I can see where he's coming from... In a way.
He oviously never trusted the rest of his team much then.
Can't wait for the joint horror game with suda 51, If EA leave them to it it will be the most horrific and fun game ever made.
And how exactly do you work that out? When you have seen nothing of the game yet?
Gosh, I hate it when people hype up a game and then when the game is ready for release, people say its rubbish, or 'a dissapointment' when there the ones expecting to much from them.
I don't think this was ever a question of trust, more that he probably would have taken the series in a different direction. Maybe he wouldn't ahve done an origin story, use Chris Redfield or bring in co-op play. He could have had a number ideas to progress the series and it would probably be just a bit frustrating for him to see the finished Resi 5 without wondering what he would have done instead. I think we as gamers wouldn't be able to fully understand this as the majority of us have not made a major game series in our lives, lol.
he never did get over resi 4's ps2 appearance after swearing he'd eat his hat if it wasn't a 'cube exclusive.
i'm dreading resi 5 to be honest.
i've never wanted a co-op resi, don't like 2 characters on screen at once, can't stomach item management between billy and rebecca (cough) sorry, chris and sheva and now the original creator is saying he'll swerve it in case it's a f*ck up.
i can't believe that capcom handed the zero team the reigns of one of their top franchises.
it better be damn good.
no doubt the gaming press will drool over the graphics, hail it as the second coming and award it a perfect 10 regardless of overall quality.
Would always happen. Game could be brilliant but he'll always have in his mind what he'd want in the game-and what he wants would be the perfect game for him.
RE5 is going to blow. I feel really bad for the creator. Any REAL RE5 fan would be very upset with it's contents. For Christ's sake, they took out the typewriters. That was probably the last real Resident Evil thing left. What's next. Dual stick controls? Oh God.
RE4 was crap. They made Leon a c**ky bastard when he was cool before. I don't even want to see how stupid they made Chris in 5. Hopefully he won't be doing backflips over the motorcycles with machine gun turrets on them. Dear God, machine gun turrets in Resident Evil.. stupid
The only thing good that possibly came out of RE4 was the creation of Gears of War. That's it
And coop? Dear God this game is going to be scary..NOT. Stupid RE4 and 5 are so stupid. I just feel bad for the creator
I dont think it has anything to do with sour grapes or lack of faith. How would you feel if you created a franchise and then it was being done about someone else? You'd obviously be disappointed and would have rather done it your way.
When something has been your baby for so many years, you are naturally going to be anxious as to how it is going to turn out when someone else takes over.
resi 4 = one of the best games ever made. resi 5 won't have the same impact but will still be amazing. and re5sucks if you can't see quality get lost and stop playing resi. i've played and completed (numerous times) every resident evil game on home consoles and i can categorically state that resi 4 was exactly the reinvigoration a series of that magnitude needed to send it in the right direction. come on man we had 5 games that were similar(zero through to cv)who honestly thought that repeating the formula for 4 would have beebn a good idea?get serious 4 was amazing and i'm expecting more of the same from 5.
The continuing near universal praise, without criticism, of Resident Evil 4 is odd to me. The Gamecube remake had more detailed backgrounds, better character models, certainly superior voice acting and more sympathetic characters. The remake was the epitome of the gothic horror/ B-movie hybrid that Resident Evil is all about.
Resident Evil 4 is a broader, gorier, video nasty of a game. No doubt there are moments of brilliant tension in the more tightly packed areas like the maze, the sewer, the basement and the facility where you meet the regenerators. Contrary to reports, it is a scary game in parts partly because of the horrifically graphic way in which your demise is shown. But the opening part in the village is a bit like a bad Stella Artois advert. Nothing beats the faded elegance of the mansion in the remake for me a Panodora's Box of doors hiding puzzles, secrets, trapdoors and exits into overgrown gardens. Resident Evil 4 is purely go from A to B and never return to A or B because there is nothing intriguing there, if there ever was beyond a hoard of enemies to defeat/run past. Bioshock has been criticised by some for similar reasons amongst others but Bioshock has a wealth of detail and corridors that you can wander around and not be sure whether you've ever been there before.
Finally, Resident Evil 4 is creepy for all the wrong reasons- it's kitsch, from the bad voice acting to ludicrous scenarios like stone statues chasing you. It's like all the crazy Japaneseness that was kept in check in the previous games has been let loose and turned into some bizarre hybrid coupled with Western influences like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Finally, some of the graphics already looked dated to me when I first played the game- this game is not timeless looking in the way that the remake or Bioshock will prove to be. Because of all the factors I have mentioned, I often felt like the game only felt like a 6/10 game, something loved by flashy Devil May Cry lovers maybe but it's really not Resident Evil as we know it.
Resident Evil 5 looks a bit more serious thankfully but it will still have a similar puzzle/action ratio (practically no puzzles). I hope that Resident Evil 6 is seen as time to give players something a bit more substantial intellectually again.
