David Gibson, an analyst at Macquarie Securities, reckons Nintendo makes $6 of operating profit for every Wii sold.
The figure's not from Nintendo so it's not set in stone, but it's probably pretty accurate. And seeing as almost 35 million Wiis have been snapped up to date, the company's clearly making more than a tidy profit from sales of its little white box.
Forbes says that this just goes to show how business savvy the company is, pointing out that Microsoft and Sony are faring less well.
According to the report, MS, which has shifted 23 million Xbox 360s, 'might just break even' on each console sold, while Sony's still making a loss for every PS3 bought.
Analyst predicts there will soon be more analysts than there are things to analyse.
The only way I'd get a Wii is if they made more 'proper' games for it like No More Heroes and so on. Unfortunately, when they're selling that many Wiis (even if it is only $6 they make off each one), Nintendo are unlikely to change their demographic any time soon.
Shame there's F.A first party games/decent games coming out within the next 12 months to continue the dominance of this console.
There are plenty of games coming out over the next 12 months including Punchout, Sin and Punishment 2, Dynamic Slash, Another Code R and Muramasa: The Demon Blade.

Get a new argument.
you forgot the definitive (apparently) pro evo,the conduit, madworld, monster hunter 3,tatsunoko vs capcom and fatal frame/project zero IV. the latter of which seems to be on for a february release in europe: http://www.nintendowiifanboy.com/2008/12/01/fatal-frame-iv-may-disturb-europe-in-february/
europe getting games before america!? i didn't see that coming.
If Microsoft are (as the analyst states) roughly breaking even on the 360, which at this time is selling for less than a the Wii, then how come Nintendo are not making more money on their console.
The Wii was build to be cheaper to make, therefore making it more affordable to everyone than the 360 and PS3. If MS have brought their costs down to the point where they break even while selling at less than Wii, then Nintendo either have a very poor and ineffective cost reduction strategy, or are making much more than $6 per console.
Compare the games we consider good coming out on wii to Xbox or ps3, that's the real argument.
Well I have a 360 too and I am looking forward to Sin and Punishment 2, punchout and Muramasa: The Demon Blade just as much as any game on 360.
Yeah, I don't think they should be compared like that - 360 and PS3 are extremely similar in terms of games and graphics, but the Wii is something entirely different.

I think when they state that Microsoft are breaking even it means overall. They make money for every game sold so the revenues for these games are covering the loss they make on the console sales. Nintendo however make money on the hardware and software. Remember this is also an analyst quoting the $6 so it is probably just made up.
