Tekken 6 dev "considering" console-specific characters

And downloadable content also being pondered, Namco tells CVG
Tekken 6 developer Namco is "considering" platform-specific characters for its next beat-em-up instalment, similar to the Star Wars setup used by Soul Calibur IV, the developer has told CVG.

Speaking in an interview in London, game director Katsuhiro Harada said that although development focus is yet to shift from the Arcade version, Namco is already pondering downloadable content for consoles.

"We're still working on the Arcade version, so there are no concrete plans [for the console versions] at the moment," Harada said.

When quizzed on the chances of exclusive PS3 and Xbox 360 characters, the Tekken man said it could be quite difficult.

"Of course we would like to have something - as far as downloadable content goes - specific to platform. However on the other hand it is quite difficult to get Microsoft and Sony to sign off on having differences between the platforms," he said.

"It is something we're considering, but it is pretty difficult."

Tekken 6 has just been dated for Autumn 2009.

I wouldn't be surprised if in a couple of months that you'll be able to download the other platform's "console specific" characters i.e. Soul Caliber 4

Yeah, and then they can charge us for the console specific fighters at a later date! Yay!

Don't do it, Namco.

If I were a big dirty company with an opportunity to earn some extra money I wouldn't find your argument very compelling...

Have they even started on the console versions yet?

If it would speed up the development time feel free to focus on the PS3 version and not make a 360 one. Very Happy

Yoshimutsu goes platform exclusive and I'll be p**sed...

If I get the game that is...

But haven't all Namco fighters been sh!t since the first Soul Calibur on Dreamcast? Or is that just me?
DSMaster on 3 Dec '08
It's just you. SC2 was an amazing game. Tekken has more than enough characters anyway. Why would anyone bother downloading more?
If this Tekken is good, it could just pull me from VF5.

Seeing my friend go crazy for vader in SC4 almost made me sick. I think im done with every Scamco product because id hate myself if I condoned any of their shady acts.

This would be fine if it wasnt for the fact DLC will rear its ugly head.

Aww for f**k sake. Im so sick of this s**t. Namco think i'm gonna go out and buy a 360 so I can play as armour king or some s**t? f**k that. What happened to the days when you'd spend £30-£40 on a game, bring it home and play the whole thing? Now you're punished because you picked the wrong the console and you end up with a 70% finished product. And I know characters will become available to buy on PSN but why the f**k should I have to pay for something that should be in the game already? GTAIV and it's "new, side step" story is borederline acceptable but paying for characters they decide to take out the game at the last second in hope to make a quick buck.
DeVilliers on 3 Dec '08
Yeah totally agree with DeVilliers. I too am really getting sick of this crap! One console gets this character, the other gets this character, sooner or later the "exclusive" characters turn up as dlc! It's really starting to get tedious. I'm a true Tekken fan, have been since the early days of Playstation but I'm seriously considering not bothering with tekken anymore. Namco p**sed me off when soul blade (bring back the Edge Master combo!) went 2 Dreamcast and became soul calibur only to come back to PS later! Then they made me sick when they announced Tekken for 360 and now they're gonna make us choose over more (probably crap) exclusive characters! I think I'm starting to see Namco for the fickle, dirty little whores they really are! Where's the loyalty gone man?
kiza_san on 4 Dec '08
kiza_san, I think any claims over loyalty are rather dumb. What is loyalty to a company anyway? They exist to make money, loyalty extends about as far as that goal. If the PS3 had a user base similar to what the PS2 enjoyed you could almost guarantee Tekken 6 would be console exclusive.

I view downloadable content as the industry's solution to cash cycles. A games company can only make money when they release a game and then even then only when they release a good game. A continual cash flow is the ideal situation for any company, so they're doing what any company would do. It may suck, but you can ignore it. Perhaps in the future the smart developers will make dlc worth it rather than milking the consumer. It really depends on how retarded the consumer is and if you look at how many people continue to pick up a Wii you have to guess that people are generally pretty retarded.

No offence to Wii owners, I don't own any platform and had high hopes for Nintendo's little white box. The company's position and the fact the console has completely failed to live up to my expectations are starting to kick in.

Ahhh I'm getting to old for this.

finally a Tekken on xbox360 gone are the days when Tekken was a playstation exclusive this is another reason why I have switched to xbox360 from my now outdated ps2 for the simple reason that the games are getting better on xbox360 and nearly every major release game seems to be on the lil xbox360 console. I hope namco really make a good game and dont just make a half at port from the ps3 version like other games developers seem to
