Trophy errors hit PS3, fix coming

Sync issues breaking games, update on the way
An as-yet unexplained error related to PS3 Trophy synchronisation is breaking a number of games on the console.

The error, which seems to have first struck after the release of firmware version 2.50, appears to occur when users change their PSN ID or password.

After doing so, their Trophy data becomes corrupt and running a select number of games brings up an error that notifies the user of a failure to sync Trophy data. In the worst of cases, the game forces the player to quit and "try again", only to repeat the same message.

Known affected titles include WipEout HD, Burnout Paradise, LittleBigPlanet and Pain.

The first complaints hit forums back in October and, having gone unfixed for so long, it has left many doubtful that a patch will come before the Christmas break, when those PS3s should be getting a considerable hammering.

A Sony community man posting under the alias 'MusterBuster' only just this week said: "A fix is on the way, but I don't have an ETA yet".

Firmware update 2.53, released earlier this month, didn't fix the problem.

CVG has contacted Sony for an official statement. Hopefully we'll have some good news for you before the day's out.

Otherwise, there is one suggested fix that has worked for some titles. Bit of a pain in the ass though. You have to:

  • Delete your Game Data (that's the install files for a game, NOT the Save Data).
  • Use the Backup option in the PS3's XMB to create a full backup of your hard drive.
  • Restore your PS3 from the backup.
  • You trophies will all be gone but don't panic - that data will be stored on Sony's servers. Just reinstall the game, install the Trophy data and the sync should work fine. Maybe.

Give it a go at your own discretion. Meanwhile, we'd offer you one other tip: don't change your PSN ID or password for a while. Prevention is better than cure.

Thanks to CVG reader Glen for the tip.

I had to change my password a few weeks ago because I forgot it and I've had no problems and I've got both Wipeout HD and Burnout Paradise, this is the first I've heard of a problem with trophies.
stonecold77 on 20 Dec '08
is it me or dose sony constantly updating the ps3 with broken patches? dose anyone at sony test them or just hope for the best.
bash600 on 20 Dec '08
appears to occur when users change their PSN ID

How do you do that then?

Since when you can change your PSN ID? your PS2/PSP ID yes, but I've never seen the option to change your PSN ID, I've seen friends making new accounts just to have a new name.

This is also the first time I've heard about this, I also have WipeOut HD and Burnout and no problems with the trophy system. I actually do have a problem with Burnout, since the 1.5 (trophy) update, the game crashes everytime I enter my friends list in Easy Drive, so I cant sent/accept invites, but this only started to happen a couple days after the patch was out. I've deleted the game data and updated it twice and no result.

This is why i wont buy a ps3. Sonyn cant get it to work without constant fixes. How can they boast about home when simple things you can do on other consoles you cant on ps3.

Try the asking the question "how do you change you ID on PSN?". I'll give you a clue, you can't. See if you can work out what's happening now.

if the Ps3 ever goes half price of what it is now, I may be tempted to get one. I would not dare take it online though. Every other day there are stories about consoles bricking or not working properly after an update. Atleast MS have admitted they stuffed up and are fixing it. Sony are taking the spray and prey approach. Better to be safe than sorry. Stay offline.
Leave the online gaming to the experts.

Every other day? Hardly. Aside from this small problem the other one (which bricked my PS3....) was 2.40 Update.

There have been some minor problems but I wouldn't fear taking your PS3 online if you ever get one.

The last update Sony put out that bricked a handful of consoles was the 2.40 update which was quickly admitted to and pulled.

This is in contrast to MS with their NXE update which bricked a handful of consoles and continued to be made available.

Both MS and Sony are as bad as each other when it comes to covering up problems, yet Sony always seem to get the bad press over it a lot more than MS do.

Also this article seem poorly researched as you cannot change your PSN ID, something the article claims is possible and also a cause of this problem.

Yep, A friend suffered from a bricked console after updating, after reading around the internet a number of other people where hit with the same problem. It just didn't get publicised as much as the problem with the PS3 firmware update.

I am guessing that both problems hit less then 1% of console users from what I read on the internet.

Thanks, I'll take your advice. With the money I save I'll get a few games. Unlike what you over priced bluray player users do. You will beleive anything sony tell you wont you.

I don't think I am biased. I have had PS1 & 2 and still currently use my psp. I'll admit sony changed the gaming world for the better. I think it's disapointing that they have let it go to their heads and think they can dictate the market. I also don't like people who were probably in my position who bash the xbox with the same old arguments day in day out. Put the Ps3 and 360 next to each other for the same price, and I admit it would be a tough choice right now. I'll give the 360 the edge at the moment with the better online, better controler in my opinion and gears of war.

If you put them together at the same price Sony would be bankrupt JOKE. Seriously if put side by side on price then I would say the PS3 would pip it. Free online being one bonus and Blu-Ray plus USB HDD media etc.

yet ANOTHER FIX???????
the ps3 is the most bugged console in history.
how many firmware releases has it had since launch?
Sony should be shamed of themselves.
nothing they seem to release ever works!

I have to agree, in terms of me trying to find value in purchasing a PS3. As i lost my job last month, the ability to buy a console without good self-justification is tighter. The only games that appeal to me that i love is MotorStorm and LittleBigPlanet, and it certainly isn't worth spend up to Ł300 to play them, and with reports from friends saying the updating the console keeps doing is putting me off further. Odds are i wont buy one till well into next year, when im sure that their online service is working with constant updates.

Yeah, I am glad I have my 360 to fall back on when the PS3 inevitably develops a fault, its a reliable error free console that just keeps on working without problems no matter how you treat it.

Nice one Microsoft, if it wasn't for your excellent hardware testing and development process we might have been stuck with two problematic consoles this generation.

Shame on you Sony, giving us a console with dodgy hardware, crappy system breaking software updates and no bloody games, get your act together........

lol I get the feeling there are a lot of bitter ps3 owners out there before you start getting bottomy i own both of these consoles and while neither are perfect i would recommend the xbox over the ps3 everytime for its overall package the sony has never broken down on me the xbox has twice but i still go back to it i love it. I also enjoy the ps3 but not with the passion of the 360 it maybe to do with live and acheivements(yes i do love them)im not saying this to @iss off ps3 owners but i use my ps3 more for watching blu ray than gaming the only game im really looking forward to is killzone 2 any multi platform games out I would get for the 360 and stick to exclusives on the ps3 whatever you think and the ps3 may still come out seling more than the 360 microsoft have made a major dent in the console sector and have made me look forward to their next console (just not for a couple of years plz microsoft.

Good post and I'm in the same camp as you on preference. As you quite rightly say the PS3 could outsell the 360 only time will tell. There are fair few games I am waiting for on the PS3 though Uncharted 2 and White Knight Chronicles being 2 examples.

As usual, there are more tossers in here than at a pancake party!

Get a life people. This is all I ever read these days:

My 360 does this - My PS3 does that - Yours is too dear - Yours is too cheap - blah, blah, blah..... Oh, and my personal favourite - I only use my PS3 to watch films, where are the games? Or in other words, I can't afford a PS3 so I will have a pathetic dig because I'm a numpty - either that or - I'm a spoilt brat who could benefit from a trip to Africa for a month.

Boring, boring, boring and tedious.

Mark I'm guessing the majority of your rage was directed at condemnedmans post.

You are, and have been for as long as I can remember, biasd towards the PS3 - which is fair enough and entirely your choice.

Sitting and complaining about what appeared to be a reasonable comment however, is more irritating than the points you brought up.

Basically what was said is "I have my ps3 for its exclusives, and really appreciate the blu-ray funcionality, but I prefer playing games on my 360."

You would probably say you prefer to play the PS3, and keep the 360 for exclusives, if you have one.

One thing you'll need to eventually accept is that a lot of people do use their PS3's to watch films as it may be their only blu-ray player in the household. Up until quite recently, and probably still currently, it was the best value blu-ray player available on the high street.

I suppose everyone with a ps3 could go out n buy a seperate blu-ray player for movies, just so they don't offend you. Rolling Eyes

So wrong! My post was a general post and wasn't in any way aimed at Condemnedman, whom I thought made a fair point. I don't mind thoughtful opinions.... My post was aimed at the tedious rants that occur on every single thread. End of.

...And it was my opinion, so you are coming across as the same thing that you have accused me of...
