Wii video service launching in 2009

Will offer cartoons and original content, says report
Nintendo's teaming up with Dentsu, Japan's largest ad agency, to launch a video distribution service on Wii.

It'll offer original content created for the service, rather than existing shows or movies, and is set to debut in Japan next year. Unfortunately there aren't any launch dates for other countries yet.

That's according to the Nikkei business daily (via Reuters), which also reports that the service will offer cartoons and other entertainment content.

You'll need to pay to watch some programmes, while others will be free but ad-supported.

Obviously we can't pass judgement until we know some more, although it sounds like it could be a bit kid-orientated. Still, it's nice to see some movement in this area from Nintendo either way.

We've sent the company a mail to see if it has any further details on the service, although we imagine everyone's sitting around at home eating Christmas leftovers at the moment. Hopefully we'll have some more information on it soon though.

Won't memory limitations be a problem? Or will it be streaming? If so, the quality won't be much cop. Perhaps hard drive support would solve the problem, Nintendo?
AJDarkstar on 28 Dec '08
It will most probably be streaming only - Nintendo doesn't believe Wii owners need or want useful add-ons like hard drives - only add-ons made out of plastic that look crap Very Happy

We already have a streaming video/tv service on the Wii courtesy of the BBC iplayer. Lets hope it is a little better quality than that eh Rolling Eyes ?

They also stream the videos on the Nintendo Channel.

Cartoons don't interest me. A freeview player on the other hand...

Still waiting for that hard drive add-on. Rolling Eyes
