Microsoft wants its games back off Woolies

Company prepares to take legal action
Big name companies including Microsoft and EMI are preparing legal action against Woolworths' administrators in a bid to reclaim millions of pounds of stock.

Woolworths' distribution arm, Entertainment UK (EUK), still has tens of millions of pounds worth of games, CDs and DVDs in its warehouses, despite the fact that the last operating Woolies stores are due to shut tomorrow.

'Under "retention of title" rules, suppliers can claim back their own stock if it has not been paid for but, more broadly, they can claim stock that has been paid for in lieu of debts,' says The Times.

If successful, the strategy would give the likes of Microsoft the chance to resell the goods, rather than seeing the administrator, in this case Deloitte, shifting them on the cheap.

Woolworths went into administration late in November as the group collapsed under £385 million of debt. It was later reported that Nintendo was owed £21 million and Microsoft £26 million from EUK.

can't believe that if i had actually handed in the application form on time, and got the job, i would nw again be jobless. there are certainly going to be some holes in towns and cities now. farewell Woolies

my local woolworths was selling too human the other day for like 39.99 still, and that was apparently after a 50% discount!! hilarious! no wonder things have got so bad, every game was ridiculously overpriced compared to the other shops just down the road but they didnt reduce prices to try and compete at all.

Maybe if they had a look at their pricing a couple of years ago they wouldnt be in the state they are, to think they are going to sell things (not only games) at like twice the price of their competitors stinks of arrogance in my opinion.

the 39.99 was the price of too human before the 50% discount. please don't tell me that you were actually retarded enough to believe that woolworths would sell games at £99.99 a time before discount.

oh right! thank you for pointing that out for everyone! wow do i feel stupid, i dont know what i would have done without you! have you replaced that faulty sarcasm meter you got for xmas yet?

so... speaking of retarded, 50% of £99.99. £39.99?
up2nogood316 on 5 Jan '09
I'm not 100% sure how it will work out when dealing with such large numbers but I have a friend who's father's business closed down owing tens of thousands out once he declared himself bankrupt them debts were written off. That was 10 or so years ago so I can't say how things are now but maybe nintendo and Microsoft have lost that money. Still sad as hell to see woolies go my family are so p**sed I got them woolies vouchers again for Xmas.

£99.99 discounted by 50% doesn't give you £39.99. Laughing
voodoo341 on 5 Jan '09
you got them woolies vouchers? Why? Was it a joke?
ledickolas on 5 Jan '09
As sad as I was to see woolies go (the missus worked there part time) I did manage to get some good deals.

Got rock band, which ive been wanting for ages for £45, thats for the instruments and the game.
Got a 120gb hard drive for my xbox for £45, got Force unleashed for £10 played it through and sold it on ebay for £20 and about another 4 or 5 games thats were dirt cheap that i was semi interested in playing for about £10-£12 a pop.

So all in all happy days, shame that its gone but im sure itll be the first of many.

Oh and the discounts were applied at the till I'm sure the staff were a bit too busy to be printing labels for everything everytime the discount changed.

where the hell am I going to get my Halloween costumes?
brad.storch on 5 Jan '09
I read somewhere that games were one of the few things not included in the sales, I wonder if this is one of the reasons.

The question is, who currently has all of the stock that didn't move? That stuff must be sitting somewhere (which in itself is stupid - you should keep lowering the price until someone buys it), so what's the problem?
The Woolies admins team just needs to go "okay, come and get it" and it's all done.
Dajmin on 5 Jan '09
Games werent as highly discounted as other items but on the last day in my local store they were 90% off although there was pretty much bugger all left by then.

dammit my typo meter f**ked up i should probably take it back to woolies... bugger.

think you definately should take the sarcasm back to woolies as well guy but i don't think you ever had any proof of purchase.

To say £40 is overpriced for a game is slightly skewed considering it is the average RRP of pretty much every game released.
WHERESMYMONKEY on 5 Jan '09
I was in Zavvi yesterday and they were just as bad. It was 10% of everything except games consoles, ipods and tickets or something but it was a complete joke. PGR4 for £49.99. Halo 3 for £39.99. Animal Crossing on the wii, £39.99 (most other places are £30) and their cd's were ridiculously expensive.

No wonder they are going under and serves them all right too.

I can easily see Currys and PC world following suit soon enough.

Speaking of Woolies high prices, i went in their last week and they had Fifa 06 for 49.99 in their special videogame "Sales" aisle... That games 1.99 in some stores! Feck Woolies and their overpricing, i certainly wont miss em.

Nice to see everyone commending woolworths for their prices and well done for everyone getting bargains (jobless vultures) - unlucky microsoft and nintendo for letting them have so much stock (you deserve all you get SRRP £50/£40 is a rip off), perhaps you should have spread your stock better and priced it at a fairer price for all to sell. Woolworths have ALL year devalued some great titles like Zavvi so I'm not surprised they have gone, they deserve to go no one can keep losing money on sales - apart from supermarkets who will then hike up your weekly shopping bil - What i cant believe is that people are still buying games that are so easy to complete. 2008 wil be the year where games were worth £5 and thats the price they should be!
Gamer2049er on 5 Jan '09
It's not funny at all the woolies/zavvi general losing jobs all round but when I saw that headline I had to laugh (very dark sense of humour). MSoft aren't responsible for all the games only their titles so that wont be many. Either way feck off MSoft you money grabbing gits.

Oh and I have not read the article Razz
lonewolf2002 on 5 Jan '09
when i went in there they were selling shelfs! and pretty much most games were gone in the store i went 2.
Joshinator2008 on 5 Jan '09
I got some good deals from woolworths closing down sale. My bro got Assassins creed for the ps3 for 15.99! Bargain.

Some of their stuff I would never have bought in there though if it had not have been in the discount. They should have looked at their pricing strategy.
AJB123644 on 5 Jan '09
Lol, i went into my local on New years Eve, and there was nothing there at all, except for the games behind the store, i took them all, about 20 games, for just under £80 Smile like PGR4, Civ Rev, Condemned and a few more for 360, a few DS games i gave my Goddaughter, and some PC games, great value, but couldn't help feeling sorry for all the staff, they looked really down Sad
casperthedog on 5 Jan '09
I managed to pick up a copy of GH:WT solus for £17.99 today at my Woolies that is closing tomorrow, and half a ton of pick and mix for less than a fiver!! bargins.
steve5424 on 5 Jan '09
Woolworths were FAR too expensive for gamers. Even with 50% off, some games still cost more than Gamestation and most e-tailers.

My Dad went into the Beckton Woolworths the day before they closed down. My dad (the only English bloke in there he tells me) was offered twelve copies of Hitman: Blood Money (XBox 360), that were hidden behind the till, for £30 - he has them on eBay now if anyone's interested. Wink
Knight on 6 Jan '09
The vouchers part was a joke yes. I got gears 2 and motostorm 2 for 15 quid each from my local woolies on my way to work one day it was open at 8am. Was still a shame to see the store go I hear weatherspoons are interested in the store.
gogo65uk on 6 Jan '09
40 quid for a game you can get for half the price in a shop opposite is not a good price for a closing down sale. nuff said
up2nogood316 on 6 Jan '09
Saturday was my Woolies last day but I of course have to have a Saturday job don't I Evil or Very Mad

Full Rock Band kit and game for £45? Damn... Sad
