Killzone 2 has snagged a perfect 5/5 score in the latest issue of the US Official PlayStation Magazine.
According to forum posts from those with early subs copies, the mag describes the game as "a powerful contender for the best game of 2009".
This beats Resistance 2, which got 80 (or 4/5 in the mag's new score system), and is one of only two PS3 exclusives (MGS 4 being the other) that has been awarded a perfect score in the magazine.
"The buddies alongside you in each battle have been expertly tuned to provide just enough cover and support to actively get your back on occasions, while never making it feel like they could achieve every objective alone," says the review.
"None of the circumstances, weapons you find, locations you visit, or frankly any of the details in the world feel arbitrary. The world is consistently realized in its unappealing flavour," is adds, according to this forum post.
In closing, the review concludes: "Without a doubt Killzone fans, action, and shooter fans of any stripe will instantly tag this sequel as a powerful contender for the best game of 2009."
Sounds good to me. My PS3 could use a decent shooter and it looks like this is the one to wait for.
But I hate review scores that have low numbers; it never gives a decent result. 5/5 is 100%, and no game has ever deserved a perfect rating. At least with one out of 100 (or 10 with decimal points) has a little bit more accuracy.
well the review is from an official mag but still the game is looking s**t hot and all we've heard from it is positive views, apart from a few beta niggles which should be ironed out, e.g. using R3 for iron sights and a slightly slow run speed. still looking like a Halo beater.
official mags are always going to give exclusive games a decent score. However from what i've read and seen of the game so far. I'd honestly say that they were well deserved. roll on feburary.
Who cares about the reviews? I played the beta at a friends house - and that short time was enough to know that I will be buying Killzone 2 on release.
Oh, and I prefer the 5 star rating. I mean, what is the difference between an 8.9 and a 9.1, other than .2?
Bit early for 'could be Game of the Year 2009' comments, isn't it? Still, KZ2 is looking good. From what I've seen of it, it looks like it's gonna be great.

Halo beater?
Come on now, dont take us down that rocky path.
Looking like a good shooter for PS3 owners to enjoy anyway.
'A Halo beater?' pft, perrlease. Don't tell me that is still the bench mark to which other shooters are compared? Surely COD4 is the current console FPS daddy? Halo didn't come close to that for me.
Pre ordered along with SFIV - the first 2 games I'm looking forward to in the first quarter of the year.
As a 360 owner (and a previous PS2 owner), I was hoping that after all the hype this game would bomb (you know you all were too) BUT . . . . after playing Metal Gear at christmas and seeing this get such good marks, I would consider, maybe, purchasing a PS3. Only maybe.
I can't wait till Feb but god I hope there's a co-op campaign mode. My mates and I are loving the co-op side of things in RS2 but miss the split-screen co-op. Choices Uk pre-order is Ł31.99 btw.
it's good that the ps3 is getting a GOOD exclusive for once. yes, GOOD. MGS4 will probably be moving to xbox, and sony are trying their best to get customers to buy the ps3, cos it is only good for playing blu ray dvds and using it as a paperweight, an expensive one at that.
the ps3 only has a handful of exclusives, like rsistance (didn't like the first one), motorstorm (admittedly excellent), littlebigplanet (looks awesome), mgs4 (love the look of it) and now this (an FPS with no new ideas and has all been done before). and i remember the time when everyone was saying haze would be a step forward for FPS's, and look where that went. it wqas one of the worst games of 2008. the same with heavenly sword and lair; two highly anticipated games that turned out to be crap. all the exclusives for ps3 go to the xbox anyway cos they sell badly. guess why? people have xboxes, as they can afford them and they actually give things rather than promise things and then disappoint by releasing a beta version instead of the proper thing (home).
and don't trust magazines that focus on one console. official nintendo magazine constantly over rate games (wario ware smooth moves deserved 70% at most, not 92% like they gave it). xbox magazine is the only one that rates games fairly (they gave halo 9/10, which i garee with, then they gave oblivion 10/10, which it deserved).
a note to all sony fans: go for the wii or xbox 360. there is no point getting exited about a game like resistance 2 or killzone 2 which, even if good for a FPS, has been done before, and a lot of the time better (goldeneye 007 is THE greatest FPS ever). killzone 2 looks just like all other FPS's, except a bit shinier and with better AI team mates. it's just going to be the same as all other FPS's anyways

First reviews of big exclusives and official mags eh? Not worth the paper they're printed on.
I remember getting Red Steel for the wii because ONM gave in 90%+ or something. Never even bothered with it past the first few levels as it was so sluggish and crap.
Not that I'm comparing KZ2 to Red Steel. Just making sure people don't get disappointed if it's not game of the year because of this review!
I know the relative low scores of motostorm and RFOM2 crushed suiv, and the 360 fanboys were heart broken that Nuts and Bolts turned out to be a bit of a turd!

You're kind of missing the point that a significantly large number of PS3 owners have already been playing this games beta trial and have been amazed by it. I've placed my preorder on the strength of the beta, not any reviews.

wow ur pretty funny man, i mean u truly think goldeneye is the greatest fps in history? i dare you to try and play it now. a classic is a game tht u can play anytime 10 years or more later and its still good, while goldeneye is absolute s**t if you play it now. Sure it was a VERY influential game but thats it. now abt all FPS's being the same, im pretty sure that was the case since half life but you seem to thoroughly enjoy the abysmal halo so what gives? sure opinions are great (it seems you hate Sony so much as if a PlayStation raped you or murdered your family back in the day) but yours is just annoying.
goldeneye has some of the best multiplayer action on any FPS, and whilst i am not a fan of halo, halo 3 was worth 9/10. and it is blatantly obvious that you are a sony fanboy, as you think that everything that doesn't play on a ps3 or any other sony product is pure crap. may i also remind you that some of the only good games on your console of choice, like GTA4, are also on the xbox 360, which even though i have problems with (red ring of death being one, the noticeable copy of miis as well) is vastly superior to your expensive paperweight.
360 superior shure shure show me that box pumping out graphics like killzone 2 or god of war 3 than mayb ill believe yoy face it gears of war 2 is the most advanced game the 360 can handle even cliffyb said that

Everyones entitled to their own opinion and all that but to slight the graphical capabilities of Gears 2 is a bit short sighted mate.
I love my 360 and tend to finish everything I get with a few noteable exceptions. Gears 2 was an exciting experience even if the story was a bit baws. Me and my mate played through the Campaign in Co-Op and didnt move from the couch for about 2 days - he hates almost every action game and insists on playing FIFA 09 all day!
I hope KZ2 is good cos it means I'll be able to blow the dust off the old PS3. Also means I might finish a game for my PS3!! I've had my one since launch and I've never felt gripped enough to play a game to the end, even MGS4...
You talk about the graphics in KZ2, admittedly I havent played it but grey is an easy colour to band about plus the textures could be bland and boring.
On the other hand Gears does brown very well, but pushes the limits with great textures.
GoW 3 - gameplay footage is hard to come by and even then the videos are grainy. GoW has looked good but it has a graphical style to maintain so I dont think it will advance much. Alot more dismemberment and claret but I can see a fancy looking GoW 2.
I played the beta, and it was pretty good. My socks are still firmly on my feet though, they weren't blown off by any stretch of the imagination. It is a decent, solid MP shooter, if a little uninspired.
The campaign is what will make or break this game I feel. After Halo, CoD, Far Cry 2 etc delivered excellent narrative experiences, it's going to have to do something radical or ingenious to elavate itself beyond the competition.
I do however have high hopes. I figure at some point Sony are going to have to come good on something, and given the derision they endured following the original unveiling of Killzone 2 (E3 2005), they have to nail this. HAVE TO.

i said half life was the last real step forward 4 fps's (4got 2 mention deus ex), is that a PS game? i wouldnt say im a fanboy, i do prefer my ps3 over my 360 but prefer my PC over those 2. Now why do you think halo 3 deserves a 9/10 if all of tht has been done years b4 but you wont take a glance at killzone 2? I dont get it. I also encourage you to try and play goldeneye now, trust me its absolutely horrible compared to todays standards and doing so will probably destroy all those good memories you had with it, it did for me.
judging by what games radar have said the game is solid but nothing special. they listed good points and bad points, with it being quite an even split. judging by the negatives they list (if they are correct) i think this is an 8/10 game at best.
i cant see how this is a 5/5 game when if compared to the likes of half life 2 it brings nothing new or better and hl2 was released in 2004!
