Kojima to make "Western" games

Metal Gear studio revamps to help penetrate North America and Europe
Metal Gear Solid house Kojima Productions is undergoing a thorough "structure, tools and staff" revamp so that it can further penetrate the Western market, Hideo Kojima himself has revealed.

Speaking in the latest Famitsu (via Develop) the MGS creator said that because of the restructuring at the developer, 2009 "is going to be a very important year" for Kojima Productions.

"We're currently reviewing everything in order to make Kojima Productions a team that can challenge foreign creators and software houses," he said.

"I've thought a lot about how Western games have been winning, looking it from a global perspective, and there are things that I've noticed.

"I've come to understand that the way we've made games up until now won't translate globally, and I've come to think that I need to make Kojima Productions a team that can compete alongside the rest of the world," he added.

It's anyone's guess what sort of changes Kojima will be making internally (perhaps they're moving to Bromley?) but Hideo has been rumoured to be eyeing up the FPS genre as his next target. Stranger things have happened.

It'll be interesting to see where he take the studio next? I cant remember his name (was it Ryan Paton?) who was a Lead Dev on MGS4 and from what I gather he had quite an important input into the development of the game.

To me it would be pretty simple. Go and pilfer some top American and European Dev Houses and get the best talent to work with you, with his skills and vision and their western apporach great things should be expected!

porting MGS 4 to the western made console would be a good first move.

Although MGS 4 would be a welcome port to the 360 for many, I think he's thinking more about producing a pure action game that will be far more appealing to Western gamers in the Halo or GoW mould.

With his skills and talent, that could be a very interesting project to keep an eye on.

i know, i was kidding. Anyhoo would be good to see what he comes up with. Hopefully it'll be multi platform this time.

What the hell? It's an 8-kudos adbot now?
If not, shut the hell up and turn off caps lock Smile

The Japanese like using games to tell a story (JRPGs, MGS with lots of cut scenes, etc).
The west like games that they are in control of (GTA, etc).

I'm not a big fan of the cut scenes in the MGS series (because I'd rather be playing a game than watching) but I do have respect for trying to get a story across that you might miss if it happened while you were in control.

He should get in contact with Take Two or Bioware.

Valve are better at doing this than take two and bioware.

kojima is an ASSHOLE
online_fanboy on 6 Jan '09
Kojima should stick to what he's good at and leave the FPS genre alone.
potnoodle1 on 6 Jan '09
I don't really find Kojima as being all that talented. I guess I'll find out when this 'western' game he makes fails or not.
