Xbox 360 sales have topped 28 million units worldwide following the console's most successful year, according to Microsoft.
The company says 360 has now increased its lead over PS3 to eight million units, although it's worth pointing out that Sony's console was released a year later.
Microsoft also said that Xbox Live now has 17 million subscribers, the majority of whom hold paid for gold accounts, and that online sales via the service jumped 84 percent in 2008 from 2007.
"For Xbox, 2008 will be remembered around the world as a pivotal growth year at retail and online - even in the face of tough economic conditions," said Don Mattrick, senior vice president of the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft.
"Worldwide, a record number of players flocked to our broadest games and entertainment line-up ever, while the New Xbox Experience thrilled millions of fans by making our console even more engaging. And yet, we've only provided a glimpse into the new world of interactive entertainment that we're imagining. The best of Xbox 360 is yet to come."
Still, we're not surprised the console's moving large numbers seeing as it's cheap as chips and has a great game line-up. Sing when you're winning (or coming second), we guess, because things can always change.
The only thing we can say about this Gen is that the Wii is the winner and probably by this time next year I would expect the PS3 and 360 to be sharing a similiar market share, tying in 2nd place together.
For me, this is a good thing as last time round Sony had it too much their own way for far to long, with each platform now more than holding their own we can look forward to some great games being released this year.
EDIT: Nice to see the usual suspects above giving us their impartial and balanced views on MS, keep it up boys, we have a long year ahead of us
shameless. why doesnt he compare his sales to the wii?! - a similarly priced console.
dont associate us with that budget heap!!
Because the 360 isn't in direct competition with the Wii as it attracts a different audience in general...it's all about wiping the floor with that over-priced black piece of s**t which is pinning all its hopes on Blu Ray taking off and not as a games console.
Brilliant clip but you know if that guy tells you to do something you're going to fecking do it.
Yeah. Entertaining from the outside....but if you work for him i bet he's a real ball buster.
And yeah mogs, only an 8 million lead. Just means Sony have to sell 8 million more to catch up to where MS are at this very moment. 1 year lead or not!
Brilliant clip but you know if that guy tells you to do something you're going to fecking do it.
Yup - to be fair, they all do it. I work for a pretty big international software company and we see clips like that all the time from our conferences...it's even worse when they practically demand some audience participation in them, you get to see people you know looking incredibly embarrased!

Sony need to drop the price of the PS3 to be able to compete with M$. If i didnt have a PC or any console id pickup a 360 due to its price and normally cheaper games

What a maniac, i wonder if these are his kids http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=3aXrI3c2fkA
im sure these gaming sites post sales news about the 360 figures just to rile up sony fan boys! its hilarious to watch! if it was sony in the lead the fanboys would be posting everywhere trying not to vomit over their keyboards with joy!
i personally think the ps3 will catch up as time goes on, blu ray playback and gaming is tempting for people, much like dvd playback and gaming was tempting last generation.
Next gen, I really don't think MS will be like this with the press releases (I hope to god they're not, it is getting tired). They were not expected to be ahead of the PS3 this gen; next gen all companies can go into it expecting to 'win'. Sony are right to be humble.
At least this generation has taught us some good things:
1. Make sure you release a console that works. You can't do that two gens in a row and get away with it.
2. Don't bulls**t customers with promises of a superconsole that turns out to be only slightly more powerful than its competitors. You can't do that three gens in a row and get away with it.
3. You have to work with developers, when designing your console.
4. Graphics are not the be all and end all.
5. The public likes innovation and something different (who's have thought?!?!).
6. Don't be arrogant - that included MS's cringworthy chest beating and thinking they could get away with selling flawed goods; Sony's arrogance assuming everyone would carry on buying the PS brand, regardless of the price/performance and Nintendo thinking that once they get ahead they don't have to bother releasing actual games anymore.
7. Old people like video games if they don't have to press more than two buttons.
But for those going on about the PS3 being expensive and the 360 being budget. You realise you are talking about games consoles here? There is no prestige. None. It's gaming. It's hardly B&O, or Chanel or Lambourghini.
The only one that had any prestige was the PC Engine as you just couldn't get them over here, so they were cherished. And the Neo Geo, because the games cost more than the other consoles on sale at the time!
Right lets forget about that console, we all play the PS3 or 360 or both if you are lucky (like me) and I am very pleased with what MS are doing with the 360, it's still the best console experience in my opinion, and I can't see the PS3 trumping it anytime soon.
I do think the PS3 sales will overtake though eventually. Blu-Ray is certainly a USP for the PS3(indeed that's mainly what I use my PS3 for at the moment) and no doubt we'll see it's price drop further this year.
MS are doing a lot though to cater for the hardcore, I've particularly noticed their strategy for buying the exclusivity for the DLC e.g. GTA4, Fallout 3, Left 4 Dead etc. This is bound to hurt the PS3s hardcore sales, but I think the Playstation brand is very powerful amongst more casual gamers in particular, so I doubt Sony will feel the effects.
My prediction is that by 2010 the gap will have closed significantly but with the 360 still ahead, and by 2011 the PS3 may have superseded the 360s sales figures. Perhaps by this stage MS will have already released the next console, either way I'm glad to see that console gamers have more choice these days, I'll certainly be enjoying the exclusives of both platforms.

1. I've got a Wii, I play on it, so do a lot of people.
2. Exclusive DLC isn't as big a deal as you cook it up to be. GTA4 didn't sell huge numbers on X360 over PS3 and neither did Fallout 3. Many gamers will play those games for a couple of weeks and then forget all about it, DLC or no DLC.

I have a PC and Wii. I play them both in equal measures. Along with my friends and family. My Wii is very much alive in my household and I am happy.
My son visited Christmas and he bought his XBox with him. Boxing day we split the day playing my Wii and his XBox. It was great fun. We had a nice varied mixture of games to play through the day. (Not all day of course, that would be too much)
Still beating the same old drum then Lordy? You must be hurting deep down? Dont worry too much, it's only a game (console).
StonecoldMC -100 points.
We could go on all day...
We could but I think it will be better for all concerned if we dont. Is there no way you can let a positive story about the 360 slide without infecting the thread with your pro Sony stance.

yes, game consoles, its not about prestige, its about what you can afford/are willing to pay to game. Theres a sweet price for consoles for mass adoption and its around £100-£200. If you compare both machines the 360 is a much sweeter deal if youre only interested in gaming
Right lets forget about that console, we all play the PS3 or 360 or both if you are lucky
That seems like a bit of a stupid idea (no offence).
The truth of the matter is that this gen MS and Sony are picking up the scraps from nintendo. If you look at the lead the wii has it would make more sense to say we all play the 360\PS3 and wii.
regardless of whether its gathering dust or not i'd say that its a safe assumption that most of us either still do or have in the past own a wii.
@ ricflair. well done for another awesome post, but i'm just wondering what companies you were refering to with some of your posts.
Also hasn't it always been true that the least powerful console of the gen 9/10 is the winner. Its an odd shift that this time sony have gone from making the machine with the lowest specs to the highest. Talk about breaking a perfectly good business model.
The PS3 in my opinion is a bit like stella artois, The adverts may try to tell us that it is reassuably expensive, but we all know its just bottled rats p**s.

A New Year but the same old story.
1. You seem more concerned than I do.
2. Pro-PS3. You clearly exaggerate.
3. Well Happy New Year!
1. Concerned? Who Dear, me Dear, no Dear. How very dare you
2. Pro PS3, OK I take it back I can now see that you are infact pro MS, as is evident form your posts.
3. And a Happy New Year to you too.
Were all friends on this site Lordy, no animosity here.
Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz ? My friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends. Worked hard all my lifetime, no help from my friends, So Lord, won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz ?

2. Die Microsoft die.
3. Thanks, it is and it will be! After all - 2009 is the year of the PS3!
En Garde!
If I was a fan of the Sony Empire, I would be embarrased to use that phrase '07/08/09/10: The year of the PS3'. Ive heard that one more times than ive heard 'credit crunch'.

full of rat p**s? how did that get by health and safety. If you actually owned a PS3 like you claimed you wouldn't be such an idiot.

It was a light hearted comment really, I've enjoyed Mario kart, Wii Sports and Resi 4 on my Wii, but lets face it, it doesn't exactly cater to the hardcore gamer on a regular basis like the 360 or PS3 does.

Inaccurate in this case. The gaming market that MS and Sony are catering to is most certainly competetive as they seem to try and target similar gaming niches. That the PS3 is much more expensive doesn't negate the fact that both companies are vying for the same pieces of the overall pie. It just means that Sony is charging more and will thus find it increasingly difficult to remain competetive price wise which may not sit well with you but there you have it. That's the nature of the price wars carried out in the market place.
As to the year long headstart by MS negating direct comparisons that too can be overcome. Simply take a look at how many units MS shifted on the market during the Xbox 360's first year and compare that directly to how many units Sony shifted during the PS3's first year. Granted, it's not quite as ideal as both units selling at the same time because there may have been a void in the market at the time that led some customers to go with MS as opposed to Sony because the Xbox 360 was perceived to be newer but that's how the cards fall from time to time.
What is somewhat irrelevant are the sales percentage increases. Sure, they're interesting but what's even more interesting in my opinion are the hard figures; in other words: how much/many was/were sold? Ex. If you sell one item the first year then it won't take as much to increase your sales by 100% the next year whereas if you sold 100,000 items the first year it will require more effort to increase sales by the same percentage the following year. Diminishing returns and all that.
As for MS making less profit since it slashed prices on the Xbox 360 that may well be true when limited to Xbox 360 sales alone. Now include the sales of games and other gaming paraphenilia for the Xbox 360, subtract the costs of production and sales, etc. Add those figures with the figures for the Xbox 360 and that would give a far more accurate idea of whether or not it's an overall profitable venture for MS. The same applies to Sony and Nintendo.

It's been a profitable venture for MS for quite some time, they make a fortune in royalties for every game sold on the 360, not to mention XBL.

Anyway I like rat p**s
True the wii doesn't cater so much for the hardcore crowd yet. but considering the average development time of a 'Hardcore' game is much longer than a casual one it's one surprise that the wii has been a little thin on the ground thus far because originally it wasn't looking like a viable venture for most developers and it isn't untill recently that ehy have set to right this. Hopefully this year'll be a little better for the 'core gamers' wii wise.
Ican't drink 'rat p**s' It always gives me the worst damn hang over. Like goblins are drilling for oil on my frotal lobe.

I don't have the actual figures but it would surprise me if MS wasn't doing quite well, maybe even doing better than breaking even. Regardless, this isn't the first time MS has demonstrated it's willing to throw resources at a project while accepting as part of its strategy that it will initially operate at a loss. That's one of the big advantages I perceive MS to have over Sony in that MS having cornered important and vast sections of the day-to-day PC home and business markets gives it access to much larger and often more stable sources of profit thus enabling it to play Santa Claus with start-up projects like the Xbox which then led to the Xbox 360.

If Microsoft was doing quite well, it wouldn't be sacking 15,000 employees.
As for playing Santa Claus, there's a huge difference. For starters, Santa Claus doesn't nickel and dime you for your presents.

Tsk tsk. Those are still unconfirmed rumors. That they may turn out to be true has yet to be determined. Furthermore, as was the case with Sony, if any job cuts are forthcoming it remains to be seen which division of MS will be hit. Some financial analysts and investors may view a job cut by MS as a positive sign that the company is taking pro-active measures to continue it's business ventures, weather the storm while maintaining it's existing profitable operations. Love it or hate it MS dwarfs Sony financially and again given the supremely dominat position MS holds in the PC OS arena at present time that's one mighty cash cow for them to use for other projects.
As for playing Santa Claus I specifically stated that in reference to MS projects; not towards the public.
Why? Does owning a PS3 magically make you exponentially more intelligent these days?
You said it. It's MAGIC!
I didn’t say anything, I posed a question.
Yes and I answered it.
Well you could’ve answered it with a bit more aplomb, at least when celebrity midget Paul Daniels did that he had celebrity wife Debbie McGee in some kind of glittery leotard. Just making it big doesn’t make it better than Debbie McGee.

In an honesty I don't think you know what you are talking tbh
If we all sat down and were honest with ourselves here we would come to the conclusion that the PS3 is the connossiuers choice - the real innovator on the market
Games like halo or gears of wara are NOT hardcore games : they epitomise what attracts the casual brainless firearm's collector
I tell you what :
*Metal Gear Solid 4 *LBP *GT5 *Heavy Rain
are proper games for proper people, not the ASBO hooligans that buy xbox's on the blackmarket
You look at yourself in the mirror and tell me WHAT ORIGINAL, HIGH-PROFILE GAMES HAVE EVER BEEN RELEASED ON THE 360 IN CLOSE TO 4 YEARS ON THE MARKET
The main reason Sony are perceived to have failed is because they trounced the competition with the PS1/2. Judging by Sony's attitude for the first 18 months, I would assume that Sony pumped huge amounts into the PS3 assuming they would be on top - it and Sony will do very well and may well exceed the 360 overall. But by 2011 it will be six years since the 360 was released (the last gen lasted 4/5 years). Nobody saw the wii coming though and newcomers to the wii have a pretty sweet bottomnal of games to work through, it's just us early adopters that have been hard done by the last six months or so. Plus the long forgoteen joy since online MP became to prevalent - 2-4 player MP on the same console with your mates sitting next to you.
I hadn't played my wii for about six months or so as I lent it to a mate. I got it back to play at christmas and I just had so much fun playing MK, Excite Truck, going back over Galaxy, a few hundred games of bowling etc. Apart from Fable 2, which, bugs aside I absolutely adored, the 360 was barely on. If I had a PS3 it would have been the same.
I like how suiv's list has dwindled to four games now. One came out six months ago, one is not even certain of a 2009 release, Heavy Rain looks gorgeous but solid details are thin on the ground and LBP, every time I see it, I want it a bit more. Come on suiv, you could have listed a lot more! And MGS4 is the fourth in the series and GT5 is the ummm.... fifth! Is that original? I'm not having a go at the PS3, the 360 is the same, but come on! I prefer it when you are actually properly borderline insane with your posts - that's why people love you regardless of their console.
And how can people say the 360 is not in competition with the PS3?!?! Should we go through every game released on all consoles and see which were released on both. I am going to get a piece of a1 paper and draw the mother of all Venn diagrams.

I sold more than any of these 2 bit company's anyway.
You should be ashamed of yourself
Right thats it I'm going to complain to MSoft about this........My ASBO hasn't arrived yet

Bwahahaha! Actually, if I were to sit down with you and be completely honest to my own personal opinion I'd say that it's the PC hardware market that's providing the innovation.

Shut up and bring me my chicken colonel.
Ahh Von! Petulance may be momentarily cute in a pretty girl but I'm afraid in you it walks that fine line between pathetic and grotesque. Pick your poison.

LOL great post Suivaloom, I bow to your great intelligence, you have persuaded me that the PS3 is indeed the best console. What on earth was I thinking? Weighing up the good and bad of each console in a rationale logical way, based on my own personal preferences and then concluding that for the moment the 360 offers the better experience for me. Next time I will be sure to follow your lead.
In all seriousness though, the 360 has been making money for quite some time which means MS and Xbox are here to stay. If you are a person who enjoys games, this is good news regardless of whether you buy a 360 or not, since more competition invariably means better quality and cheaper products.
I think this year both consoles have some good exclusives (Killzone 2 and Heavy Rain on PS3 and Mass Effect 2 and Alan Wake on 360 really interest me)...and I'm sure there are many more yet to be announced.
