Xbox director of product management Aaron Greenberg reckons Sony will cut the price of the PS3 in the near future. So do most of us.
"We absolutely expect the PS3 price drop to happen in the next couple of months," he told Edge.
"We're frankly surprised it's taken this long. ... I would expect they'd have to move on price, sooner than later, for sure," he added.
The comments were made as Microsoft announced that its relatively cheap Xbox 360 had hit 28 million sales worldwide, which the company claims is eight million more than PS3 has managed.
Despite Greenberg's prediction, Sony recently denied reports that it will cut the PS3's price in March.
The company says its primary aim in the short term is to "start making money", and that PS3 sales gathered momentum right through 2008, ending with a massive boost in PS3 adoption over the Christmas period.
It's hard to tell whether PS3 will see a price cut in the coming months but it has to happen sometime this year, doesn't it? Place your bets in the comments section.
Sony could take microsoft to the cleaners if they dropped the ps3 to a very competitive price. But can they afford to do it? And if they can, will they drop the price enough?
2009 doesn't look like the kind of year that people will look to splash out lots of money for a games console. I think Sony have to drop the price sooner rather than later if they're looking to challenge microsoft for 2nd place. The exclusives on the ps3 look pretty good for 2009 though. They have a chance here if they price it right.
Microsoft could probably afford to drop the arcade one to £99 everywhere if the ps3 starts to gain ground this year. That would probably surge them ahead again if that was to happen. Sony have a lot of work to do.
I fthey don't i doubt that sony won't be making much more money. drop the price a £199 ps3 would sell a lot.
Make it £150 and they'd fly off the shelves.
It would be a mixed blessing for fanboys though. They could go back to telling us its a cheap bluray player and comparibly speaking a better machine at a more competitive price than the competion.
However they would have to stop all this its more expensive coz its better b******s. It isn't get over the fact you were conned and move on.
these MS execs are like little dogs trying to hump the leg of sony! keep to your own bloody business!
ps3 started a profit on their machine before the year-older 360. they got nice earnings over xmas by sticking to their price, and had a higher sales spike than MS too - now they will drop the price and make a killing.
It's a shame the Microsoft suits don't spend as much time giving out details about their 2009 games line up as they do obsessing about Sony.
I'm seriously considering flogging my 360 at the moment. How about giving me a reason not to Mr Greenberg?
Yes its because Microsoft has nothing better to do than to massage their own sales figures & instigate the next online bitchfest instead of talking about what most people are interested in: 2009's games. Little wonder I continue to find them the ones hardest to love..
And 2009's so far looking more than a little dry for them.
Personally I don't think they need to drop the price as I don't think that's the (supposed) problem for Sony at the moment. The machine is worth the money but it's not yet got enough exclusive games to warrant the purchase.
On their previous machines, Sony had big exclusives but also little gems that came out without any fanfare and I think both of these types of games have been lacking. If, say, 2-3 of these type of games came out, I would buy one irrespective of the price, even if MS cut the Xbox to sub £100.00.
With the line-up PS3 has this year, and the new collaboration with PSP Sony keep saying about a price drop would be v nice. There are alot of people out there who i'd imagine are waiting for one, so many PS2 owners to scoop up
I think Sony are making good money in new places such as HOME, from people buying bits and also from sponsors...now I wont pretend I understand how Sony works, but surely that's got to contribute to them having a bit more flexibility with price? if theyre getting an income from elsewhere..
dunno, maybe i'm wrong - either way, 2008 was fantastic, looking forward to this year
oh well 2009 might be a little light on the ground for the 360 exclusive wise. Its ok though because unlike the PS3 2006-08 were rich with good exclusives. I'll just catch up with a few of them.
Sothe PS3 has all of three decent games coming out and its the be all and end all
Don't forge the 360 already has had way more, hell even the wii does.
Well done sony after 2 years your machine might finally be able to be called a games machine.
but if they land this year the only exclusives i'm interested in are GOW 3, Heavy rain and uncharted 2.
Nothing else has taken my fancy that much.
You on the other hand may have many other games on the system you're interested in and that is fine by me.
still doesnt retract from the main point of my post that MS have released a lot more decent exclusives than sony thus far.
Killzone 2, inFamous, White Knight Chronicles and Yakuza 3 are just four games out in the first quarter of 2009 that millions of people want. Go you back to Halo 3 if you want.
What a surprise to see some of the local Sony Defense Force up in arms and already firing off the vitriol.
I very much agree with the first poster: If Sony lowered the price of the PS3 considerably it could probably take MS to the cleaners. Will it happen? I'm guessing that there may be a price cut sometime during 2009 but will it be large enough to seriously undermined MS? I remain doubtful. Note that I only mention MS because as I see it Nintendo is so far ahead this time around still going strong so that in essence there is only 2nd place to compete for. The Wii surely must run out of steam eventually yet that goes for any console and given the life span of past consoles I doubt the PS3 will take the lead during this console generation short of the other two stopping sales completely, and should that happen that will likely be due to new "next gen" consoles being released thus rendering it meaningless whether the PS3 sells more in terms of market prestige and also because the PS3 price will then have to be lowered if it's become an old gen console. Still, the PS2 is still selling and even post-heyday production sales are preferable to no sales at all...presuming that people buy PS3 games, etc. to help offset the losses that Sony expeiences on each PS3 sold.
Currently the PS3 is far too expensive, what made the PS2 so successful was: 1. Free DVD player when everyone knew VHS was crap and DVD players were as expensive or more expensive than a PS2 2. After the first year it dropped significantly in price( i paid about 400euro for mine, 8 months later it was ~240Euro 3. a price of ~200 euro brought it within the grasp of non hardcore gamers, parents who think its a good christmas present for their kids, those that want something to do when you bring mates back from the pub for a few more beers, those that wanted to try DVD's to see what the fuss was about.
Even after the first year, there were very few actual good games for the PS2, Devil May Cry was the first decent game which came out at the end of the first year in europe. GT3 came out but was a disappointment compared to all the cars/tracks in GT2, Tekken Tag brought very little to the Tekken franchise
Whats different for the PS3 and why the above doesnt apply is: 1. Too expensive meaning its mainly hardcore gamers who have 1, it will sell in droves when it hits the 200-240euro mark, unless its too late and all those social/non hardcore gamers already have a 360 and no need for another console, it may actually be too late 2. BluRay adoption is only taking off slowly because the difference in quality and the pros between VHS->DVD is far greather than DVD->Bluray. Also not everyone has a HD tv 3. Its lost a lot of exclusives, mainly FF and GTA, that has hugely affected those of us that had PS1's and PS2's and our interest in the PS3 4. RRP of PS3 games is overpriced compared to their 360 counterparts
As i said above, it may actually be too late for the PS3 to attract the social/non hardcore gamers because the Wii has that market now and the rest the 360 has because of the price. The only saving grace for the PS3 is the free online gaming which many see as a con because its not as good as Live, also your regular gamer wont understand they have to pay M$ a subscription fee to play online when they buy a 360 and only realise afterwards when its too late
If i didnt have a PC id choose a 360 anyday based on a cost/benefit analysis, its pretty much a no brainer with the current prices of all the consoles
What a surprise to see some of the local Sony Defense Force up in arms and already firing off the vitriol.
You know what's worse than that, the vitriol from a fanboy that doesn't even own a console. Why do you even bother lecturing on price when you've already admit that no matter what price the PS3 is you wouldn't buy it because price isn't a factor?
"We're frankly surprised it's taken this long. ..." SONY aren't in the business of making cheap, shoddy hardware that they can sell for peanuts.
And that approach is clearly paying dividends for them at present time, right? Please. The PS3 has a better build quality record than the Xbox 360 but it was overpriced before the recession hit full force and it's even more so now.
anyone who thinks £300 is too steep to invest for a 80GB console, 2 controllers and a game, free internet included must be some form of tramp.
is the 360 gonna be useless now that most of its exclusives have been and gone?!
likewise is it only sensible to buy a ps3 when there is 10 must-have exclusives?? not unless your are minted and can bulk-buy every good exclusive at once and have tons of spare time.

If i didnt have a PC id choose a 360 anyday based on a cost/benefit analysis, its pretty much a no brainer with the current prices of all the consoles
I concur with every single point you stated above and I share the same analysis of the Xbox 360 as a PC gamer myself. Were Sony to drop the price to a figure close to say the price of the Elite Xbox 360 then I would be tempted. The game prices for both the Xbox 360 and the PS3 are, in my opinion, outrageously high compared to PC game prices even when applied to the same titles across platforms. Combine that with the fact that the hardware in my PC stomps hard on what the consoles are currently packing and I see little reason to spend money on a console. I'll be waiting for the next generation with interest.
If i didnt have a PC id choose a 360 anyday based on a cost/benefit analysis, its pretty much a no brainer with the current prices of all the consoles
hold on, I thought you said a few weeks ago you bought a PS3?
I do have a PS3, but unlike some of the heads around here i couldnt give a crap about brand loyalty, fanboyism or what i game on as long as i can enjoy the games. My point was if i didnt have a PC( where i get most of the 360 exclusives anyway and most look better on my PC ) and i was choosing a console based on its merits, the games available for each one, the price of the consoles and the prices of the games and whether i want to play online or not id get a 360
Just because i own a PS3 doesnt im not gonna think its too expensive as is, or have an opinion on why its not doing do well compared to the rest of the consoles. The figures speak for themselves, Sony need to get a grip and reduce it to mass market prices if theyre to catch up with M$. If they keep going at the current price point theyre gonna get whipped, M$'s next console will be out most likely end of next 2010 if the rumours are to be believed( which would mean the 360 would be out for 5 years before their new console ) meaning Sony wouldnt have enough time to catch up, also Sony are supposed to be sticking to their 10 year plan for the PS3, meaning most likely 2012 before a new Playstation

Or it might just be that there are still some people in the world who are frugal with their money and take the time to do background research on certain products before buying as opposed to being suckered in by the latest, brightest, supposedly "best new thing". I guess I'm a "tramp" then nevermind that I can afford to buy all three consoles at this very moment and still have money leftover while paying all my bills, including student loans, and saving money every month. What utter rubbish you are spouting above.

Right so you would choose a 360 anyday based on a cost/benefit analysis... it's a no brainer but you bought a PS3.

My point was if i didnt have a PC( where i get most of the 360 exclusives anyway and most look better on my PC - Gears Of War, Mass Effect, Fable 2 will be coming soon, etc. ) and i was choosing a console based on its merits, the games available for each one, the price of the consoles and the prices of the games and whether i want to play online or not id get a 360. The fact remains if you just enjoy gaming( ie. not party Wii stuff ) and forget brand crap, at the current prices the 360 wins, they each have their pros and cons, but the 360 wins on value.
As my PC covers most of the 360 exclusives, for me, in my situation a PS3 was a no brainer because id like to enjoy as many games as possible regardless of platform, not everyone is in my situation though and i had to spend some to to consider whether spending the extra was worth it, but feck it, im playing MGS 4 now lol

Wrong about this, Blu-Ray is being adopted quicker than DVD was in the same time-scale.

youre using hardware rather than sales, i should have clarified. The sales of PS3's consitute most of the hardware adoption of Bluray, movie sales are still low, also DVD uptake was slower because it didnt have the backing of a DVD capible console - the PS2 until 2000( where it was impossible to get one, so really 2001 ) when the DVD format was introduced in late 1997
I was in Sweden in 1999 and most retailers had as many DVD's on display as VHS movies

Aww, did I hit a nerve there, Voodoo? If you weren't so over-defensive about the PS3 in the ongoing console wars you might realise how silly your comment seems claiming I'm a fanboy when, as you rightly pointed out, I own none of the current consoles and thus by default I don't have a "horse" in this race. The fact that I don't own any of the three current consoles and that I've taken the time to educate myself on the perceived pros and cons of the three consoles actually renders me unique in comparison to you where it pertains to maintaining some semblance of impartiality.
With a large enough price cut the PS3 would be very attractive and I would be tempted. I probably still wouldn't buy it because of my personal disagreement with Sony's creation of SecuROM but that wouldn't prevent me from advocating the virtues of the PS3 if it were selling at a much more competetive price. Can you truthfully say the same if it pertained to the Xbox 360 or even the Wii?
fraid not people the ps3s price will not drop anytime soon so...... deal with it
People are dealing with it. They are buying Xbox 360s and Wiis instead. Or, as is my case, not buying any consoles at all and waiting for something else.
I thought we went over this yesterday! The PS3 is not a prestige item - it is a games console! Being able to spend an extra £150 does not make you part of the landéd gentry.
To me, that actually smacks of low class behaviour. Chav-like if you will - "I've got to have the best, most expensive rims on my Vauxhall Corsa"; rappers having to brag about how much money they've got, because they've got no class etc.
By all means say the PS3 is better value for money when you take into account BR, wifi etc; you prefer the games; it is more reliable. But this delusion that having a PS3 somehow reflects your social status is hilarious. Didn't one of you little oikes spend a fortune on a suped up boy racing, Gary mobile? That is NOT classy!
If you wanted to prove your wealth in terms of gaming. Go and buy the mother of all PC gaming rigs. Oh, and move out of home because that just voids any argument about class or wealth before you even start.
My friend is doing her psychology Phd, I would love to take you guys to see her to get to the root of your inferiority complex.

If you bothered to read some of my other posts you'd already have your answer which is "No, I did not". Care to try again?

any whines and rants should be at cvg for quoting out of context so it appears that MS are coming out with comments unprompted, which in this case is not true.

Wait a minute.
* Everyone is in agreement that the reason PS3 'isn't selling so well' is because of the price and the economic hardship, right?...
* and the next Xbox is coming as early as 2010, and it definately won't be a Wii clone, so therefore powerful and expensive (initially)...
...So won't MS be shooting themselves in the foot by trying to further dent the PS3's market strategy by releasing a new Xbox 720 as early as 2010 in an economic climate still in the grip of recession? Presumably a new Xbox that will be initially expensive?
I own all three consoles, but I'm just trying to add some balance.
The way I see it, all three consoles will face hardship the next couple of years, and if that is when Microsoft decide to release a new Xbox 720, then they have to decide whether it will be powerful and expensive and follow the route of the 360, or whether the new console is cheap and under-powered and follow the Wii's path.
That is why I have argued that the next Xbox, if indeed it lands in late 2010/early 2011, could very well follow the Wii model...

Is that the sound of a verbal tap dance I hear coming from you, Grasshopper? Bragging you say? Perhaps, though it served its intended purpose of demonstrating that a person who might consider buying a Xbox 360 needn't be a "tramp". Now as for your revised version of "tramp" (very convenient btw, changing the rules in the middle of the match - for shame,) if it were a matter of being tight-fisted I probably wouldn't have bought a brand new high-scale gaming PC in the summer of 2008 with the main intent of being able to handle all recent and short term future gaming titles. If all I had wanted was internet surfing capabilities, document handling, etc. I could have opted to keep using the "old girl" from 2003.
Killzone 2, inFamous, White Knight Chronicles and Yakuza 3 are just four games out in the first quarter of 2009 that millions of people want. Go you back to Halo 3 if you want.
done a survey have you? those 4 games are hardly AAA titles, i dont know why people spout such crap, really good games come around rarely so by all means get excited about games that will be worth playing but not earth shattering.
btw, i will take halo 3 over all of those you list combined!

It's nice to see that you speak for the whole of the PS3 community. Why not just say there is a bunch of games that I WANT makes you look a lot less like a snooker cue.
I forgot about White Knight Chronicles, so i guess that makes 4 for my list. even if it is looking to be a bit of a rush job.
I was thinking of playing left 4 dead for a bit, gears is always good, maybe go back and give dead rising another playthrough, redo bioshock before the sequel hits. Maybe see what project gothams all about and try and play through ninja gaiden 2 on hard. then there is always the extra content for GTA IV, Fable and fallout to look forward. Think i'll be busy enough without having to play halo 3. But i will because its fun.
There are so many experts on this site. I'll switch on the common sense button for a minute, if I may....
This is the way that I see things at the minute:
Nintendo have struck gold with the Wii. Well done for taking a risk and you deserve all of your success. People argue that there aren't enough hardcore games for the Wii, but that is what the 360 and PS3 are for. The Wii has been a revelation in the gaming industry for attracting a wider audience. I can't knock them for it.
Sony are doing things no differently to what they did with the PS2. The PS2 took a few years to really take off sales-wise and the games catalogue in the first couple of years was pretty dreadful - yet the PS3's games catalogue is much better than the initial PS2's, IMO. You could argue that Sony have rested on their laurels with the PS3, but the truth is that Sony have taken a risk - and risks are good for consumers. I'd rather have Bluray than not. And you could argue that Sony took exactly the same risk with DVD's, rather than going with the popular cartridge based roms at the time. It payed off then and it could pay off again. You don't know until you try.
Microsoft have brought some great ideas to the table, mostly regarding the online side of things. The original xbox was a great machine with some great games but it just didn't have the legs to topple the PS2 at the time. MS have tried everything that they can to make the 360 a success and to some degree they have been successful. However, we are talking about a company that has cornered big markets before, with Windows etc., yet they are far from cornering the console market. They have the cheapest console on the market, with great online features and many great games, but they have a long way to go before they can mimic the success of the PS2. They left a sour taste in many gamers mouths (mine included) when they dropped the xbox. For me to truly respect MS again, they will have to prove to me that they are going to support the 360 for many years. The only way to do that is to build slowly, in my opinion.
And all that is my honest opinion and not a silly fanboy rant. I have enjoyed all 3 machines and can't put one above the other in an all round sense. 360 and PS3 fans are arguing over nothing at the moment as neither machine has set the world alight. Only time will tell which side was right or wrong, whilst Wii owners can just laugh at the sheer stupidity of it all.

But i will because its fun.
who cares what old games you want to play and replay? really?! idiot.
I just hope not!
Heres hoping the current crap economic climate doesnt last that long, hopefully not, im sure they'd delay a launch if it does. M$ made a huge mistake launching the much more powerful and feature rich original xbox after the PS3. Theyre winning over the PS3 currently because the released the 360 earlier than the PS3, they'll want to continue this trend as it makes or breaks a consoles popularity for the hardcore that want improved gfx and what not.
I see nothing wrong with M$ or Sony taking the Wii direction, the Wii is a great console, its underpowered but still capible of great games, its just Nintendo do their usual thing of being the main developer and concentrating on kids games/cutsey games and party games. The Wii controller is great, the more innovations like that the better. Im also sure M$ would never take the underpowered console path, especially if the release the 720 before Sony's next console
well you obviously do grasshopper or you wouldn't respond. If you weren't such an utter mongaloid you'd realise that i was illustrating a point. And whats wrong with old games. Obviously you just get sucked into 'new and shiny' things.
And you could argue that Sony took exactly the same risk with DVD's, rather than going with the popular cartridge based roms at the time.
I agree with a lot of what you said, but I thought you'd been playing games since the 80's? Cartridges were popular at the beginning of the last gen - what are you on about?!?! Nintendo going with cartridges on the 64 (the previous gen) was a huge reason for the start of their decline.
And Sony didn't have much anywhere near as much resting on DVD as they do on BR.

I should get a prize then, ive been gaming since 1981 on my cool Binatone system with pong haha
Cartridges have been popular since the late 80's with the NES and the Master System, hell even the C64 had cartridges
I agree with you on your point, Sony werent taking a risk with DVD, they took that risk with CD in the original PS1( where the pulled out of the joint collaboration with Sega over the fact ). The last console cartridge based system was the N64 , in that time the PS2/Dreamcast/PS1/Gamecube have been released

Yeah, I admit to a slight mishap of information there! But I still stand by my point.
If MS had gone with HD-DVD as their natural format from the beginning of the 360's life then maybe Bluray would be dead in the water. However, Sony took the initiative (and risk) of putting a Bluray player into the PS3 from the beginning. The Bluray is now the only HD physical format worth investing in, so in my eyes Sony have nothing resting on Bluray. Blurays and players are selling really well now, compared to how DVD's did back in the day.

Halo 3 is horribly over rated!
over rated perhaps but it goes to show what i think of the other 4 games mentioned!

Killzone 2, inFamous and Yakuza 3 aren't even out yet. WKC is very popular in Japan already.
iId just like to say that i work in a supermarket warehouse, full of typical everyday people earning a reasonable to good wage. After xmas and new year there are around 7 people i have spoken to who have got ps3s for xmas, 2 who got them just before for there birthday, quite a few others who have had them since day one, and another pal of mine whos just txt me a picture of his nice shiny new ps3. I only know of 4 maximum who have got a 360 and one of them recently got the rrod and traded that in when repaired for a ps3.
Aswell as them i have 6 friends from the pub who have ps3s, and not one friend outside of work who has a 360. Now i fail to understand how microsoft can say they have dominance in sales judging by the evidence in front of me, i know obviously im not talking millions of people i know here, but surely if this were added up to a greater average then ps3 would hold strong.
The ps3 is a great console in my opinion, i bought one on day one for full whack and can honestly say i love it! I am not against having a xbox but im a little put off by the rrod, and i think for what i would need to play it, for instance a wireless connector, xbox live and a battery pack for the controllers and id want a elite for the bigger hard drive then by the time its all added up its more money to buy then a ps3 which gives me blu ray as a added bonus and lets me upgrade my hard drive as and when i want.
My only gripe with sony is they are a little too much pro american, there patches and psn games side of things, they always get them first! But on the whole im well chuffed with mine, so much so i bought a second ps3 for upstairs so i can play when the mrs is watching tv!

I thought you had just made a mistake there! But I get what you mean about MS using HD-DVD - espeically as it supposedly cheaper and the discs are cheaper.
However Sony HAD a hell of a lot riding on BR right up until HDDVD caved in, so maybe the risk has paid off in terms of making BR a success. It remains to be seen how much effect this has had on their gaming division. We'll never know though, as the PS3 would've been out a lot earlier without and would be significantly cheaper. They put two really expensive things in their new console, which ultimately haven't really made the games any better. Not yet at least.
On the WSJ site, they said something about Sony making BR a success at the expense of their gaming division, when gaming is much more profitable. Now I know they know little about games, however I will generally take the financial media over the gaming media when it comes to matters of money! Now I'm not sure about which is more profitable, but I don't think Sony expected to have to chose between the two.

On the other hand you have people like myself who know of at least 10 people that got a 360 for christmas.
out of my friends i can think of 9 of us that have a 360 and only 2 that own a ps3.
how many groundbreaking products were slow burning?! them all?
BR will be championed by everyone by the time the 360 is a distant memory.
you dont built new equipment with ancint technology... unless your microsoft trying to save a quick buck... and we know how many corners they have cut for this reason.
the ps3 will be able to stand strong in 4 years time because of its build quality but also the tech choosen for it. the 360 will be a shriveling wreck by that time.. so was it wise to sprint a marathon with trampy gola gutties? maybe in the beginning - and to hell with the future consequences (at everyone else' expense).

Well it works both ways. My 360 owning friends very easily outnumber my PS3 owning friends. In fact, my only really good friend with a PS3 just had his BR drive die after about 15 months and only one of my friends has had a rrod, not saying this is typical - just my 360 owning friends are lucky and my PS3 owning friend unlucky!
You wouldn't need an elite if you wanted a 360. You should be able to store about 8 games on the 60gb HDD and you only really need the 120GB if you want to use it for media (which you can watch/listen to from an external USB HDD anyway), and you have a PS3 for that.
It is annoying not having rechargable pads though (but then people dont complain about the wii in this respect and four rechargables cost me £5) and the RRP of the wireless adaptor is criminal!
You're an Xbox fanboy that doesn't own a console. The PS3 is too expensive for you even though you wouldn't buy it anyway. The Xbox360 is the cheap console but you can't afford either.
As I recall the C64 I had used tapes. Cartridges were only something to be dreamed of until I got the 8-bit Nintendo and the SEGA Megadrive.
Poor child. The Atari 2600 got there first.
The C64 I had had a cartrige slot at the top, but there were hardly any games that used it(I only had one- Mouse trap? Crazy Mouse? something about mice anyway- long time ago etc)

Yes. I always thought that was rather pointless... The C64 I mean - not the cartridge slot. The ZX Spectrum was the ultimate games machine in the early - mid 80's.
Oh and the Atari 2600 still got there first.
Kudos on your Saturn avatar, I am still waiting on SEGA to push out PSN HD versions of Afterburner, Space Harrier, Outrun (original arcade - NOT the coming "online arcade" version), S.Rally (original arcade - NOT the more recent rubbish version), Daytona USA and Virtua Racing. Apologies if I missed anything, it has has been a long day...
PS3 is dead in the water!. Sony fanboys are waiting for the tooth fairy to come and rescue it. I'd say any company that goes from dominating 60%+ of an industry to looking at hopefully 33% in the following generation has failed, regardless what anyone says. nobody plays this business to finish last, and thats where Sony will finish. my PS3 is just like a coffee table now, while the 360's having all the fun.
how many groundbreaking products were slow burning?! them all?

See, I just find comments like that amusing considering the hardware my PC packs compared to all three consoles. I think the pivotal matter for the question as to how the PS3 will fare ultimately comes down to how much time it has before it's competitors release their next gen consoles. Since Sony has stated it expects 10 years of life out of the PS3 it doesn't at present look like they will make the first transition to a new next gen console leaving it to Nintendo and MS to pull off.

You really are a man of the people.
Why doesn't it surprise me that someone of your near rabid-Sony-fanboy status would interpret my comments in such a manner? That's a rhetorical question btw. As a couple of other posters have stated as well based on what I see on the market price wise and in regards to games that *I* think I would like to play the Xbox 360 comes out ahead of the PS3 for *my* tastes. The RROD issues are one major concern I have with the Xbox 360 and is the second major reason why I haven't bought one. The main reason for not buying any console at present time is simply that my PC is more powerful than any of the consoles and seeing as how many of the games I enjoy are also released on the PC at lower prices than the console counterparts there is very little financial incentive for me to buy a second system that essentially emulates what my existing PC system already does at a cheaper cost with far more options. I realise it may seem strange and scary to you, Voodoo, but my choices on this matter are rooted in rational logic and financial sense. Maybe you should try it sometime?
As I recall the C64 I had used tapes. Cartridges were only something to be dreamed of until I got the 8-bit Nintendo and the SEGA Megadrive.
Poor child. The Atari 2600 got there first.
Oh don't pity me too much. Just a few years later my family ended up having servants and living in warmer climates for the better part of two decades (with many, many hours of console and PC gaming logged in).
Far from it. Actually been playing games. Dead Space is frikkin' awesome.
I don't think you've been missing much. I had a very nice and relaxing 16 days of vacation at which time I didn't miss the forums at all when visiting "the in-laws". I would love to play Dead Space and I would snap it up in a heartbeat if EA would get rid of the DRM SecuROM, etc. that comes with that game.

isint it up on steam with the DRM removed? they were supposed to have removed the crappy activation limit for lots of games that went to steam
Hear, hear! I'll volunteer the services of my sister who's currently expanding on her psychologist credentials in Australia.
Really? I'm downunder. Give me her number and I'll take her out. Get some Australian in her.

Would be nice but I haven't kept track of it. That's part of the problem in my case at least: The initial interest in a game is stopped dead in its tracks with the DRM EA has been using and now that I have lost confidence in their products I am much less inclined to give serious consideration to any of their titles even if there are claims that supposedly some of EA's games on Steam no longer contain DRM. I will need to have it unequivocally proven and confirmed in a legally binding statement from EA before I'm willing to risk buying another infected product of theirs. Once bitten twice shy as they say. Furthermore, I prefer having the actual physical copy of a game as opposed to a Steam download.

Once again I will point out the joys of fact not being dependent on your acceptance of it being so, Voodoo. Embarrassing? Perhaps you should take a step back, take a long cold shower, read some thought provoking books or articles and then take a look at your ridiculously over-the-top "Love the PS3 or die scum!" behaviour on these threads.
FFS. If your not interested in any of the 3 current gen consoles then why are you here?
I'd suggest a trip to the edge forums so you can ram your head up your own backside along with all the others.
How can you speak with any authority on any system if you have never owned them? Reading articles does not give a balanced perception, it's just the writers opinions and if your that easily brainwashed then you need to take a break and get out a bit more.
Firstly the PS3 needs a price drop to tempt me. I am currently pondering buying either a 360 or PS3 for some decent online gaming ( bored of the wii's limited efforts) I have friends who own both systems & I have no aliances with any system, everybody swears theirs is the best system but in reality I think the cheaper system (360) will tempt me as the games are also cheaper.
Just to put the cat amung the pigeons I have a theary I have on games consoles vs sales , over history the systems that have sold the best have genraly been the easyest to pirate , forgive me for saying this as I dont condone pirating but is just an observation but look at the PS1 vs n64 vs Dcast, ps1 very easy to pirate wiped the floor with every thing else. next up, PS2 vs Cube vs Xbox,, ps2 very easy to pirate stole the show again. here we are now at present systems wii vs 360 vs PS3, wii im told is very easy to pirate & thus is stealing the show, 360 not too far off either, not heard of the ps3 being cracked yet is this why its so slow to sell? ds the easyest system yet & how many has that sold... guzillions this could even be said to some degree way back with n64 vs specy. Maybe its a coincidence but seems strange nin systems were poor selling when hard to crack, now easy they sell bucket loads!!! over to you
I thought we went over this yesterday!
Hear, hear! I'll volunteer the services of my sister who's currently expanding on her psychologist credentials in Australia.
Really? I'm downunder. Give me her number and I'll take her out. Get some Australian in her.
If you are being uncouth in the manner I think your comment suggests then I'm afraid you are out of luck. She's happily married to a big, strong Scotsman.
Tsk tsk, Petrolhead. Feeling stressed? I'm here for similar reasons that so many others frequent these forums I suspect: Gaming related news and the exchange of ideas and views. If we were dealing solely with the empirical technical specs of the various consoles in engineering terms then I would whole-heartedly agree with your sentiment that one would benefit greatly from a more hands-on approach. However, that isn't the case here. The fanboys from any of the three camps all ignore what is inconvenient for their console lapdog of choice and clearly ownership has done nothing to help those extreme views. Just as the idea that increased age automatically equates increased wisdom is false so too is the claim that in order to be well informed about anything - be it a console or other - one has to own it. If that is how you truly think all things are then you would have an awfully difficult time getting by in the day-to-day world.
Furthermore, there are numerous in-depth accounts and articles pertaining to each of the consoles to be found online alone covering everything from individual users personal pros and cons for a given console system to the professional reviews and spec analysis of the consoles. Between them it is quite possible to form a well-informed position about each of the consoles. There will still be personal preferences of course and that is what is at the heart of the matter of this dispute and not the credibility of the points raised which you too recognise by your own comments above. So, with all due respect, perhaps you should pull your head out of your irritated backside and step outside for a breath of cold air.

Once again I will point out the joys of fact not being dependent on your acceptance of it being so, Voodoo. Embarrassing? Perhaps you should take a step back, take a long cold shower, read some thought provoking books or articles and then take a look at your ridiculously over-the-top "Love the PS3 or die scum!" behaviour on these threads.
funny the way you can judge everyone else but they can't judge you.
@gmctyphoon "I think the cheaper system (360) will tempt me as the games are also cheaper." You might find that the £40 per year subscription fee will end up costing you far more in the long run. If you kept the 360 for 4 years, it would be like paying twice for the console.
thats the lamest thing ive seen in ages, wtf does BluRay gaming mean? i get better gfx on my PC and it doesnt have 'BluRay' gaming
Its really petty tbh, i mean some of the points are decent enough( wifi/free online gaming ), but comparing it to the xbox arcade version is lame
I got the 360 because overall it is more expensive and the PS3 is a cheapy, does it all straight out of the box console for cheap low life scum.
Hell, I enjoy paying more money so much that I even decided against going for any bundles. Then, to just make it seem even more expensive and exclusive, I got a taxi to the furthest Game store from me in London and bought every item individually, returning home in another taxi (I told him to take the scenic route) before dropping the item off at home and returning to the shop to pick up the next one. So it worked out as (this was before the price drops too!):
Cab to Game - £50 xbox 360 arcade - £200 Cab home - £50 Cab to Game - £50 120GB HD - £120 Cab home - £50 Cab to Game - £50 Extra controller - £32 Cab home - £50 Cab to Game - £50 Wireless adaptor - £60 Cab home - £50 Cab to Game - £50 GTAIV - £50 Cab home - £50.
So my 360 actually cost me £962. That puts you cheap skates and your £425 console to shame. I haven't even mentioned how I bought XBL in the shops with a £50 note and told them to keep the change. And I'm gutted Woolies has closed, cos I loved getting my games full price from there. Just to feel rich.
Oh how I love feeling rich and superior. I LOVE IT. And when my 360 RRoDs, sod the warranty. I'll just get to do it alllll again.
Something to be said for consoles over PCs then, eh? No DRM SecuROM here.

I haven't stopped anyone from judging me, old boy, as your own comments clearly demonstrate. What I have done is question your logic that essentially stated that if a person didn't have direct hands-on use of a console then they had nothing to say about it. Now, if you want to keep towing that line then by all means go ahead as long as you remember to keep your trap shut when speaking of consoles and PC systems that *you* don't own. The door swings both ways.
Hell, let's take it one step further according to the reasoning you used: No commenting, expressing personal opinion nor critisizing of any sort unless you have a relevant education or work background to support it. If we took that approach these forums, and indeed much of the world on a great many topics, would go silent. Think about it: No more discussing pro football unless you are a pro footballer or manager, etc. No discussing politics nor good or bad acting in movies. No discussion as to whether you like something or not on any topic unless you have already tried it exhaustively. Sounds like fun?

As far as I know...
Yep, very much so and it is a path I have contemplated venturing down eventually if the DRM scourge completely nukes the PC gaming scene. I have hope that given the nature of free markets should enough people resist and refuse to pay for DRM infected games that there will be other publishers and developers that will see a chance to seize new market share and cater to those players (some already are a la Starforce and Iron Forge's "Sins of A Solar Empire" and surprisingly the latest "Prince of Persia" which Ubisoft made a 180 turn on and released DRM free). DRM doesn't have a universal monopoly on the PC gaming scene yet so while the battle rages on I will hold the line.
