People went nuts for MGS4 like paparazzi trying to snap Cheryl Cole falling out of a club with her bits on show. But Sony apparently expects Killzone 2 sales to do even better.
A report claims that an unnamed Sony representative voiced big expectations for the grey shooter from Guerrilla Games:
"It would be a lie to say Sony has not invested heavily in Killzone 2 and each individual at Guerilla games has worked even harder to satisfy any expectations kept by the company and their loyal community. I do see the game breaking a barrier with a huge variety of groups and expect it to see sales as good as Metal Gear Solid 4 if not beyond it."
A million copies of Metal Gear Solid 4 were sold in its first week on sale in Europe alone, and over 4.3 million copies worldwide by early November 2008, according to Konami. That's a pretty hefty target to beat.
Little bit of an arrogant claim to make there. I wonder if the game actually has a content to back it up.
MGS4 had the existing franchise to lead sales; fanboys knew they were going to buy it before it was even reviewed.
KZ2 is coming off the back of a rather lacklustre original game which didn't exactly blow anyone away. It might be shaping up nicely, but over 4 million copies is a hell of a lot for any title to sell.

not really.
its a shooter. a shooter sold the most amount of copies this year unless im mistaken. and if iam, the its still one of the most popular genres..
MGS3 snake eater far from blew me away, but 4 was amazing.
KZ2 has loads of hype. very important, regardless of any merits.
its had 2 perfect scores already.
reactions to the beta were VERY positive.
arrogant to think it'll shift 4M copies? na. optimistic possibly.
PS3 owners only get a decent exclusive title once every six months, so it's bound to sell like hot muffins. Fanboys are desperate to have their own shooter to shout about to the Gears crowd.
From what I've seen and read is brilliant visually, but the mechanics are bog standard. I can see sales quickly dropping off after a manic couple of weeks.
Well, Sony will have sold quite a few more PS3's in the eight or so months between the releases of both games and a quality FPS is likely to sell more than a stealth game.
Also the PS3 has been lacking a real killer exclusive FPS, so unless they c**k it up royal (which judging by the response to the beta they haven't) I would expect it to shift quite a few copies. You can say what you like about originality, but well made FPS's fly off the shelves.
If it's REALLY good, Sony just need to make sure they advertise it properly this time.
Can't see it happening myself. MGS4 is a huge franchaise and had many loyal fans buying PS3's just to play the game. Killzone 2 however is a sequel to an average game at best, which failed to live upto its reputation as a "Halo beater". All it's got going for it is the hype built up from the CGI trailer they tried to pass off as in-game. Saying that though, this is the sort of griity game that'll appeal to PS3 owners and it's not everyday you get a first party exclusive, so who knows...

Resistance 2 scored 5% less than gears 2 on metacritic but you suggested it wasn't "decent".
You also fail to realise that COD4 is on the ps3 often voted the best game of this generation.
MGS4 is a shooter also albeit from a 3rd person viewpoint. This game has scored highly on metacritic, higher than Gears war 2 yet you probably consider that a ps3 fanboy conspiracy.
That was the same with LBP, and that didn't set the world alight.
I don't really care how many it sells, all i can say is that one of those sales will be me. Day one purchase.
The first game wasn't rubbish, it was just extremely average. From what i've seen and heard about this game it's COD4 in the future, so you can count me the hell into that!
It's basically THE first possible AAA title this year, on any console (with exception to Resi 5) so i'm looking forward to it a great deal.
Plus the fact that it's probably THE most graphically impressive game i've ever seen!
it'll be unjust if it does sell better, cant see how a generic FPS could top MGS, especially MGS4 which( not finished it yet ) but so far seems to be the best MGS since MGS1

Whilst MGS4 was part of an established series, the series did polarize gamers opinions with its heavy-handed storytelling, and as the last entry in a series thats not the easiest to get into for newcomers, it attracted as many players as it put off. I bloody loved it though.
Killzone 2, meanwhile, is not part of a series that is difficult to get into (enemies with glowing eyes. Kill). Its an immediately gratifying shooter that anyone can see and have a bit of fun with without having to know anything that came before. Its launching in a very dry period in gaming, and is one of the PS3's big-name titles. So I think shifting 4m is a possibility for it.
Im still on the fence about it personally (much as I enjoy shooters, I have picky taste), but I'm looking forward to giving the demo a try!
Ill certainly buy killzone 2....just not straight away. TBH, 4 million is achievable, but as Killzone 2 is being pipped as a "halo killer" they should be looking to at least double that figure, halo 3 alone has sold nearly 9 million units. Killzone 2 would have to massively out perform expectations just to even match that, let alone surpass it.
I really want this to be great but I just know that a crazy amount of hype will be generated leading up to the release and the game will have no chance of living up to it. I'm sure it will be a good game but not the GOTY some idiots have been making it out to be.
The same thing happened with MGS4 which is the most over rated game I've played in a long time although LBP is the exception to the rule as it was mega hyped and in my opinion deserves every bit of acclaim.
"What gets me is that Halo is still the fps to beat but halo 2 & 3 were absolutely awful, Halo 2 in particular." - I loved Halo 2! But Half-Life 2 is better than any of them, in my opinion.
well at least that means a deinterlaced 1080p@30Hz for those of us with 1080p tv's, cheap way to get it though as the vertical res is effectively only a crappy ~540 just that the FPS is doubled

At least man it will be in actual HD and not just say it is on the back of the box.
LET THE HYPE AND CRIES OF IT BEING OVER RATED BEGIN.
I doubt Killzone 2 i'll sell more than MGS4. Just in terms of length of series Metal gear has been around in one for or another since the 80s.
This is the 2nd Killzone and the 1st was a bit of a marmite game for most people i know.
Also factor in that there was a real deficeit of decent games on the PS3 when MGS4 was released and thier isn't so much now. It might be a sleeper hit but i don't see it breaking any records.
To whoever said MGS is a shooter. You're doing it wrong! its a stealth game and last time i checked guns are noisy!
If you wanted a stealth 'em up, if you wanted silence, and camo, and distraction, and evasion- you could do it.
If you wanted Call of Duty 4 with more freedom, more guns and better graphics; you could have that too.
If you wanted Syphon Filter meets Metal Gear (IE: Stealth until discovered, then become a Rambo.) you could do that too- it is not just one game. It's a shame the game was so short, because more people would see that. I fecking love MGS4, and for Killzone to sell more copies it's going to need to top it- and I don't think it can. MGS4 was my GOTY last year by a mile, that said though, it was in a year where Fallout 3 disapointed (Excellent game, shame about the overall experience.....Bethesda created a great world with nothing OF CONSEQUENCE to do.), Silent Hill 5 failed to make the date and delayed by 4-5 months, Resident Evil 5 went multiplat and got delayed to 2009.....It was the best game on PS3, and still will be when the frenzy of KZ2's release is over. Only LBP has come even close to the level of quality MGS4 has. (For the record, I think MGS3 the best game in the series overall, but as an experience, MGS4 tops everything I played last year, including the amazing Lost Odyssey.)
I like Killzone, I thought the setting was cool, weapons well designed and aggressive feeling to fire, the plot was fun and the main big bad was a fairly good, if predictable villain. My main problem was the balance issues on the on-line multiplayer- every map was littered with grenades and explosives going off, cheapening the experience overall.
KZ2 will be good, but is it a high quality AAA? Who knows.....we're going to see.
Recently purchased a PS3 and have to say the MGS4 is the best game I've played on all three consoles so far (haven't completed it yet). I have purchased pretty much every high scoring game on 360, Wii and PC. (I may exclude Portal though from this list, which I absolutely loved as well as the rest of orange box).
Although I suppose the reason I liked it so much is I have never played a MGS game before, so the game play felt a little different and while the plot in bonkers, it was so over the top and rediculous that it became quite fun. Haven't enjoyed a game this much since Goldeneye tbh.
Although this is from a person who doesn't like Gears of War, Halo 3, COD4 or Resistance. All pretty standard and boring after a while in my opinion, and based on comments above probably won't buy Killzone. Is it me or have FPS been boring for a while now? I played for example COD2, 3, 4 etc, but none of them can recreate the experience of first playing the orignial COD which at the time blew away the bog standard Medal of Honor. Perhaps I'm just getting old...
that said though, it was in a year where Fallout 3 disapointed (Excellent game, shame about the overall experience.....Bethesda created a great world with nothing OF CONSEQUENCE to do.)
What!?...nothing of consequence! You mean like blowing up an entire town with an old nuke, type inconsequential?
It will sell loads because PS3 owners have been waiting two years for a second decent game. If you only have two good games then everyone will buy them.

I take your point that the ending is of no consequence, but in your original post you did say nothing of consequence to do, which I took to mean while you were playing the game, not watching the ending.
