PS3 and PSP userbase climbs over 61m

Stringer boasts combined userbase, Hirai claims $1m of virtual goods sold through Home
The Playstation 3 and PSP have accumulated an install base of 61.3 million.

That was the claim according to Sony CEO Howard Stringer, who addressed a packed audience at the Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas.

Moments later in Stringer's keynote speech, he introduced Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Kaz Hirai, who in turn proceeded to flaunt more large numbers that the company was responsible for.

One million dollars' worth of virtual goods has been sold through PlayStaion Home, Hirai announced. The service, which reached an open beta stage back in December, has now been downloaded to 3.4 million PS3s. As reported earlier, Electronic Arts are now embarking on their individual virtual space for the service.

Also reported here earlier, Hirai explained that Media Molecule's LittleBigPlanet had sold over 1.3 million copies, with Sony logging 300,000 user-generated levels, and that the PlayStation Network now holds over 17 million unique accounts.

Good news for Sony. Two consoles that have been hampered by bad press and criticism selling over 60 million collectively.

I'm not sonys biggest fan but you are right this is good news lets hope they finally drop the price of the PS3 as they seem to be doing so well.

I think that split would probably be about right.
The Wii/DS sales would obviously beat them, but it is still an achievement nonetheless.

I think the difference is that the PS3 and PSP are so much more capable and they complement each other so well. Remote play is one example, being able to play your PSP games with a dual shock controller another example. Then there will come little big planet portable, allowing you to continue making your level on the go or the GPS, talkman, instant messaging, tv on demand capabilities of the PSP. Being able to access your PSN account through the PSP or the PS3 also shows how they are two sides of the same coin.

I await with interest how Sony and third parties find new ways to improve the functionality of the two machines and what suprises Home may have for the PSP.

Oh and on another note. How has the PSP sold over 40 million and yet it's still largely ignored by third parties? has that ever happened before i wonder. It's sold 12 million more than the 360 and has much lower development costs to produce games for it.

i dunno, if the xbox got slaughtered again this generation i may have expected MS to lose interest, luckily the 360 is putting in a much better shift.

you only have to see what happened to the last xbox at the end of its life (dropped like a hot potato) to see what MS are all about.

oh, and starvinbull, lots of people may have bought psps but im gonna take a wild guess and say they probably arent buying games once they have it. the homebrew scene for psp is HUGE.
