Sure, look through our 119 Killzone 2 screenshots and you'll notice it's all a little grey. But it's not all like that, promises game director Mathijs de Jonge.
Speaking to CVG, de Jonge said: "The first images that we released were just from one level that was still in early production, and I can assure you that the final game has a very rich and varied colour palette - and still manages to maintain that gritty and realistic look and feel."
He went on to say that the differences in production values between Killzone 2 and "other shooters" are "striking".
"We've managed to push so far in all areas that this game feels like a next generation game. When I go home at night after a long day of work I play other shooters to relax, and although I certainly enjoy playing them, the difference in graphical quality, production values and the experience itself, is striking."
Nearly every aspect of the final build has improved including textures, lighting and particle effects, etc. It looks absolutely glorious and like the developer said, the grey areas were generally from one level. In fact we haven't even seen half of the levels yet!
When I go home at night after a long day of work I play other shooters to relax.
Well, well, well, what a scandal!
I'll bet he's a secret Gears of War fan really. That would explain why there's a certain inherent greyness about the game - just without the lovely silky Gears textures.
Same here. What's the problem with grey and brown shooters if they add to the atmosphere? I don't want to be saving the human race whilst making numerous species of unspecified aliens extinct if it's going to resemble a Butlins holiday camp. On the other hand, grey, brown and gritty wouldn't suit other genres either.
That said, how fun would that be? Damn 'Red Coats' thinking they could make my childhood a happy one with their singing and dancing. I was always a Havens man...always
both graphically and gameplay wise. also pretty sure it wont have the same cheesy eye-rolling plot and terrible OTT gravelly american accents. (wheres the vomit smiley?)
Guess we'll find out in just over a months time. Looks bloody awesome though. I don't want to see anymore video clips or screenshots. I want to wait now and experience the full game for myself.
Really interested to know what Guerilla are going to work on next. I know there's 3 chapters of DLC for KZ2 on the way but what's after that and who's going to be using the Killzone engine for their games? They've already made noises about really pushing the PS3 to its limit in their next game.

they're both different types of shooters. try comparing it to a FPS next time. and as far as i'm aware the correct spelling is jobbie

From everything I've seen, I don't imagine KZ2 will be winning any storytelling or acting awards, somehow. The whole visual style reeks of generic militaristic shooter to me.
Thats not to say I don't think the game will be good. Just that it still looks rather bland in my book. But I'll certainly be trying the demo and renting it to find out for myself.
And I happen to like Gear's OTT badass style. its hilarious ;D
...and I would also like to take issue with the pathetic manner in which each of the above posters (excluding Marty) attempts to try and justify this greyness.
Looks better than RZ2 I think but IMHO it's still just a grey version of Timesplitters 2.

Probably Killzone 3....hehe
I'e been reading a bit more about this game. It sounds absolutely staggering what they have in the game....bots in off line and online multiplayer, clan support for about sixty people, in clan games you battle for in game currency, that you can then bet on upcoming matches to win more money.

Timesplitters 2 was tongue-in-cheek and satirical of games, whereas KZ2 is going for that Hollywood look and feel of OTT.

badass it aint. cringeworthy and -inducing. why have a gritty look to the game and spoil it with voice acting like that?! almost as bad as RE1.
and ensabahnur (its joby) gears goes into FPS mode when aiming im sure, or at least when up against a wall. id actually says its more comparable to GOW than halo, which is mega-colourful.
KZ2 will be a blast, and will no doubt be one of the top FPS this year, and I said in an earlier post, I would expect it to shift at least 2 million copies in it's first month.
This does not mean that it is the 2nd Coming of Gaming though, just that it will be a good game.

the only time gears goes even remotely FPS is when aiming with a sniper rifle. any other aiming and you still see your character onscreen. i am looking forwad to KZ2 i just think you'd be better comparing it to something like halo. gears is a different breed of shooter that Killzone , even with its cover mechanic, will be nothing like.
oh and i have heard of jobbie being spelt jobby but i think your dropping a d there. anyone else got a view on the great s**te debate
I saw 2 new vids of this games and was totally blown away!!!
This is true next gen and looks stunning!!!!
I certainly doesnt look boring and grey to me, it was bu far the most exciting and advance shooter in terms of graphics, physics and sound i have ever seen.
I have the day booked off work and i am ready to roll.
looks great from what ive seen and am getting on release, wether it will be a gears killer tho is something that will have to go the "proof of the pudding is in the eating" test, and gears 1 & 2 tasted like they were cooked by gordon ramsay...

Hey, I've gone on record previously as saying that, while it is visually beautiful, it is still really grey. Not that that's necessarily a prod at it, but everything I've seen of it suggests it will be largely devoid of colour. The guy says this changes later on, and I've no reason to disbelieve him.
Seriously though, what's wrong with a bit of colour in games? Will the future be sepia?
As I said, I in no way feel this will detract from the game, and really, it's largely just a personal opinion at work. Unfortunately, because it's a PS3 exclusive, you will ALWAYS get folks that see comments like this as an attack on the PS3 itself.
Rz2 or R2 its still a bit so so in single player ? im looking forward to killzone only ps3 game i pre ordered well i did pre order resistance but sold that pretty sharp after playing it so im not going to let it count :{

What the hell has the colour palette got to do with the gameplay? Does that mean we should compare this game to Fallout 3 as well?
Why don't you wait until you have played it before claiming it's a GOW killer. Nothing screams fanboy like someone raving about a game they have only seen videos of. Let's not forget Killzone was touted as a Halo killer on PS2 but turned out average.
As for the greys, Half Life 2 had a realistic style but was still full of colour, hopefully KZ2 will be similar.
some of the examples on that page are hilarious, and some remind me of childhood. "mummy i need a jobbie" was one of my friends most used comments followed by "mum i'm finished" which meant it was time for her to go wipe his ar$e. he was 10 at the time.
Using a pale colour palette is nothing new, look at the last Rainbow 6 and that was crap too. I reckon this will be better than Gears, that is based on nothing more than the last hopeful comment of a dying Sony fanboy, because all I care about is that my system may have a game better than one on another system, even though I have never played Gears I know it is crap and this game will be better................................................. bored yet? Well I am so bite me, I will stick to Gears thanks.

LOL - it's sh*t like this (pardon the pun) which makes me look forward to being a parent... Not at all.
sorry, but who the hell wants to play a futuristic future, thats based around killing scumbag traitors, to be colourful? The whole point is it's got an industrial feel. Want colour? Play LBP or something. Im not discrediting LBG, awesome game, truly is remarkable, but Killzone 2 and LBP are on oppisite ends of the spectrum.
Double Dragon on Gameboy has four shades of grey, but that didn't stop it from being one of the most enjoyable 8 bit games I've ever played. Go figure.

Well...one could argue that if the game looks the same all the way through then that could add to the general feel of repetitiveness.
Y'know, the whole I've been here before...or was that the last level? type of feeling.
Did you hear what Ronaldo said to the insurance company when he crashed his Ferrari?
He said that the wall hadn't gone back the full 10 yards!
Oh, and has anybody noticed that it is looking a bit grey outside? That's realism for ya...
yes but i can also see blue cars, red roof tiles, and green trees
only kidding. i think as long as the art directions fit with the scenario then its fine. its not as if using less colour means they can use more geometry or better texture quality.
personally i don't see much difference between this and gears 2 which also looks fantastic. still not a patch on crysis though but i'm not surprised when you take into account the specs required.

The only thing getting repetitive around here is your apparent negativity towards Killzone 2. Well done. The problem is, nobody gives a toss what you think.
A wide colour pallette, the entire spectrum of grey.
from light to dark.
Lets hope when you get outside theres some good blue or red sky. Maybe some trees.
Just because you're fighting a war doesn't mean that the surroundings have to be citites and slums.
Then again Fallout 3 used many shades of brown and that still looked fantastic.
See, common-sense prevails in the end. Fallout 3 does indeed look fantastic. And it does indeed look extraordinarily brown. You see, Fallout 3 is set after a nuclear war. And Killzone 2 is set on an almost inhospitable planet. I very much doubt there will be blue skys and Pecans in the trees.
just because a planet is inhospitable doesn't mean the sky isn't going to look impressive. In fact it dhould look even more so. Reds and oranges. Even fallout had beautiful blue sky.
There's still going to be an atmosphere of some type.
Or will it always be a dull cloudy day on the planet too.
everything was smashed to buggery in gears. Didn't stop that having some impressive scenary.

its all very subjective, the dev made their choice and are standing by it. have you noticed everything in gears 2 looks overly shiny as if it is wet? not sure if this is an UE3 thing or a choice made at epic.
the colour palette is perfectly idiomatic, why add colour for the sake of it. Mario/LBP+colourful =fine, KZ2/COD4 etc need a dim and realistic colours/scenery for the context in which they are in. This isnt a game about a post apocalyptic psychadelic armageddon where you shoot magical phosphorecent lightning at jumping dandilions whos aim is to turn the world into marshmallows and bleed rasberry jelly. I mean who would want that................whoa wait a min...
I would hardly say saying RZ2 instead of R2 is 'classic'. OMG he put in an extra letter etc etc.
Ahh grasshopper, FPS's just aren't comparable to GoW. The whole USP of Gears for me is the cover system. It's what seperates it for everybody I know actually and is hasn't been done to death as a concept in dozens of games. I like GoW, it's a great game (show me any video game that has voice acting even comparable to Hollyoaks and I'll eat my hat). Not best of all time or this gen, but hey ho at least it's not another FPS. And KZ2 had better have better graphics than an 18 month old 360 game (Halo3) considering all the 'muscle' the PS3 has underneath the 'hood'.
Actually, if everyone is so sick of grey and brown games, a small company called Nintendo released a console about the time of the PS3 that has many great colourful games, that aren't all shooty/drivey. And it has an FPS called Metroid Prime 3 that control wise craps on anything a 360 or PS3 will ever do with two analogues, and the colours are vivid!
And there are more to great graphics than high res textures and lighting effects. Galaxy and TP had far superior art design and a level of imagination that I think KZ2 etc could only dream of.

There's a lot of rumours about a Killzone game coming to the Wii. That's rumoured to be the first in game video clip.

You don't always want or need lots of colour anyway.
In a wartorn place in a sort of apocalyptic future, you don't expect tons of cheery woodland or sunny beaches
And just because theres a war on means the sun cant shine? The most graphicaly intense game ive seen is crysis warhead and thats set in lush jungle. I dont see how devs can claim they have the best graphics if they just churn out gray city blocks. They are used poorly at the very least.

Thanks for proving ric flairs point Voodoo. Wolfenstien although old as the hills is probably just as much fun as playing killzone 2 even if it is a little dated now. Hell if you can't appreciate a game on its merits than your a very sad person.
There is more to gaming than graphics. The wii already has and is continueing to show us this.
Metroid prime 3 control wise kicks the stuffing out of any fps on the 360 or PS3. its the closest thing you're going to see on a console to mouse and keyboard. hell i think it might even be better.

You're not kidding either. For everyone's information - even the sparks and particles have collision detection with each other.
Raytraced filters and CELL processed physics ensure this game will look as good as any game can this generation.

I prefer it to the keyboard/mouse. Had the button layout on the remote been slightly better (or there were more within a finger's reach), there would be no question and I don't get carpal tunnel from the wiimote.
It's certainly more immersive and I am more accurate with the pointer than the mouse, even after playing FPS on the PC with a mouse for ten years.
Some people will just continue to judge the wii because it doesn't look as good on their 42" screens. Poor loves, all that money on a fat TV and the console that is the most fun to play doesn't take advantage of it!

Agreed. It appears every XBot on the forum has something to say about KZ2 and it all smacks of jealousy.
Wait a minute! COD5 is all greys, dull greens and so was COD4. Half life 2 was all orangey and what about Fallout 3? Yet they get good reviews and no one gives a s*** what colour palette they use. Gimme greys to the eye sore Spore anyday!

Killzone 2: Forgive The Hype, This Will Be A Defining Experience
Okay, look- we're not the biggest fans of insane hype. We merely report the news, and it's not our fault that half the headlines these days have "Killzone 2" in the title somewhere. However, this may be the only instance where we can't hear enough...and that's because the feedback is so unbelievably positive, we have to start believing that Guerilla's shooter might be the single defining experience of the generation so far.
Here's an example: another recent headline has an Italian journalist known as TTP on NeoGAF talking about the game; he has the final build of Killzone 2, and despite the embargo, he has to heap praises on the game well ahead of time. Here's what he had to say-
"My god. Preview code looks almost like pre-alpha compared to final. Every minor issue I had with the game has been addressed with chirurgical precision. Almost feels like a GG dev was hidden behind the sofa taking notes at every "mmh" of mine during my preview code run. And there are quite a few differences in how things unfold so it feels fresh despite having played this early stages to death.
I can confirm that Guerilla Games have paid particular attention to criticisms made in the gaming press, such as ground textures, up-close textures when taking cover and the artificial intelligence. Everything has been improved for the final build."
Yeah, well, he's not the only one who currently has that final review build in his hands, and we're more than ready to corroborate this guy's testimony. However, we're waiting for the embargo to lift same as everyone else, and we can't go into details. What we can do, however, is gather up all the information over the past few months since the beta released, combine that with our own experiences with the game, and come to the following conclusion: Killzone 2 isn't just a blockbuster. It's not just a great game. For this generation so far, it may be the great game; the one production that becomes an instant measuring stick. In other words, everyone will compare future games to KZ2 for many years to come.
You have to realize, we don't like seeing the same thing over and over again, either. We imagine our readers and most gamers out there are pretty sick and tired of seeing "Killzone 2 this" and "Killzone 2 that." That is easily understood, but if you haven't played it as some of us have, and if you can only read the words...well, you can't fully comprehend what we're saying. That Italian journalist is only one of many, and we'll leave you with one final question: of all the amazing games in the past, can you think of one that blew every last journalist and critic away? And I mean, there's not a single one who's only lukewarm on this; it's basically unanimous. When's the last time you saw this? Even with the likes of GTAIV and MGS4, you could always find a few haters out there....but not this time. And that's exactly the point.
I was watching a vid of KZ2 the other day. While the graphics are great, I was a little miffed with one particular thing. The constant aiming through the sights of the gun. I don't think I've seen a single gameplay movie with any kind of of 'on the move' shooting going on.
It's all, stand, zoom in on the guys with the little red eyes conveniently giving away their position, make fine adjustment with the analogue stick for a couple of seconds while the guy you are targeting and his mates seem to ignore you or shoot at you with the aim of an Imperial Stormtrooper, and repeat.
I've just not seen much in the way of actual excitement. If anyone could post a link to a trailer with some truly exciting action going on, I'd appreciate it. It's genuinely stunning, visually and production value wise, but I would like to be a bit nearer the edge of my seat. Waiting to be convinced of the potential 'GOTY status' that would have me investing in the hardware necessary.

Perhaps because running + gunning leads to certain death.

Epic fail. No-one is going to listen to nonsense like that.

Why attack my post in such a way? I asked if anyone had a link to a trailer that showed some proper action? "Epic fail. No-one is going to listen to nonsense like that." What nonsense? I wasn't telling anyone what there is or isn't in the game. I was asking if anyone had any movies that didn't principally consist of distance sniping.
A simple "no" would suffice if you've not seen any.

It does not rain here - it pours, so planting seeds will get you nowhere. Wait for the game to launch - then judge.

half life anyone, half life 2 anyone, deus ex anyone, bioshock, the list goes on that there are many games that in the past have had the press gushing and not just for graphics (that seems what most of it is for kz2).
not all press are that hot on this game, i saw an article on games radar that was positive but still pointed out some fairly big shortcomings.
i think we should wait and see what games turns out like and play it so the talking can stop!

LOL...what a joke, it looks like a poor washed out PC wannabe title despite the desperate hopes of Sony tossers!
With that SERIOUS lack of video memory, pixelated textures are the order of the day, and I assume it's a mandatory hard disk install YET AGAIN despite the power of Blu-Ray as a gaming format...don't make me laugh ffs, as I'm sure is the case at the Sony movie studios!!, * the suckers bought it as a gaming format as well??? *
Come on you Jap lemmings, the AI won't come close to the ORIGINAL Halo never mind GEARS OF WAR, despite the ramblings of your most vocal delusionist, "LordVonMakeItSoNo1InThatCrevice"

TonyB dude you're right. The PC gfx are usually better than the consoles, but you always have to spend more to get the games to look average to good. And then you gotta consider that an average to top end PC will need to be ugraded on average every two years. That's a whole lotta bucks which I'd rather spend on games and less oogling at the gfx. So are you a gaming-console whore or would rather be a i'm-so-rich-show-me-the-love-pc-gaming whore?! And come on dude, you'd rather a pc on 22" mon, keyboard (keys all over the place), mouse, chair and desk with piddly speakers compared to console on 40" screen, sofa to lounge on, wireless controller with easy control access, 5.1 proper surround sound and gf licking your earlobe whilst playing! She never use to lick my earlobe when I was sat infront of a PC. Use to be called a geek back then
Why attack my post in such a way? I asked if anyone had a link to a trailer that showed some proper action? "Epic fail. No-one is going to listen to nonsense like that." What nonsense? I wasn't telling anyone what there is or isn't in the game. I was asking if anyone had any movies that didn't principally consist of distance sniping.
A simple "no" would suffice if you've not seen any.
It does not rain here - it pours, so planting seeds will get you nowhere. Wait for the game to launch - then judge.
I'm only kidding *wink". Each to their own. Gaming = happiness so whether it's having fun on the PC, consoles or running around naked in your house with a wii tennis racket. Keep smiling and let the good games role
I hated the original Killzone on PS2. I thought it was a boring, run-of-the-mill FPS with horribly linear level design, so-so graphics and a story that couldn’t hold me even if it would’ve cuddled afterwards. Killzone: Liberation for PSP, on the other hand, was an amazing action experience that I so desperately wanted to see super-sized to play with the big boys in HD land as Killzone 2. To say Killzone 2 had the odds stacked against it would be an understatement and nothing short of it delivering me rainbows and sunshine could make it better. Here’s where I admit defeat. Also, I’m kind of a d**k.
What I’m about to say is very bold and will no doubt have some of you calling me bad names: Killzone 2 is the best looking console game ever. I say it completely without exaggeration because it’s true and I love you too much to lie.
The lighting effects are absolutely amazing, especially during a warehouse shootout where daylight pours in from holes in the roof and reflects in the area as if you were really there, complete with color bleed and discoloration. Character animations are very detailed, feeling lifelike, but without the creepy movements and expressions that haunt most other games. The game also oozes that cinematic feel all the kids are talking about these days with a subtle film grain effect and Michael Bay-esque explosions.
Ok, so the game looks nice, but is there some substance to go with the implants? You damn right. What I can equate the gameplay to best is pretty much an interactive war movie shot on a handheld, HD camera. The HUD is limited to an unobtrusive ammo counter and grenade readout — there are no health bars or navigation aides. Combat is fast, open and requires you to use the environment to your advantage. A first-person cover system is not only cool, but it’s your best friend.
With a 10-15 hour single-player campaign, multiplayer modes with mission objectives, bots, classes and experience points, I’m super, super excited for Killzone 2 to hit us in the face and pants this February. I saw its face, now I’m a believer.
I'll be the first to admit I'm a PS3 hater. Sony dropped the ball on the PS3 and they are paying for it. I do hope KZ2 does well if only for the poor developers sake. People have hyped this thing way too much and for it to get scores this good is great. To those dogging Xboxers don't forget we actually have PLENTY of great shooters so enjoy the ONE you have. As for it being too grey? All "realistic" shooters are too grey right now. Hopefully that will change at some point but THEMS THE BREAKS.
Figures this turned into a xbox sony war, I own both systems and still don't understand why people fight like this. I can only assume it's because it's competitive and people love competition, I mean that's why we play games right? Instead put down the fight and try both systems you might be surprised and believe it or not you would be doing yourself a favor
Congratulations man you found a post that says something just a bit negative about Killzone 2. Does the games seriously threaten you, Tonyb, horngreen et al that much? You know I'm sure if I sat and trolled the net enough I could find an article that says something negative about every single Xbox360 game including Gears of War 2.
If the game really bothers you that much I suggest you stop reading the articles about it and ignore it. It's not as if you're actually going to play it.
everyone harps on about the visuals, what bout the sound? (crank up to 11 me thinks). Oh and to the person who doesn't like looking down the scope of the gun just watch the preview on gametrailers you might be surprised.

i stumbled on this while finding info on how to get all the collectables in gears 2 so up yours. every argument needs balance and some people need to be more grounded as there is so much hype about this game it is only being set up for a fall. i thought it would be an objective piece of info that would be more useful than the stuff read so far. it is as useful, if not more, to know the negatives as well and for your info even gears 2 has drawbacks, hell its not even as good as some people say but way better than the seriously over rated gears 1.
get over yourself, sometimes suivaloom writes more sense than you.

I'm quite sure no one forced you to read the article, no matter what network you're using. As it's obviously upset you I suggest you avoid it in the future. I hope you're going to bring balance to all articles now.
Whilst Xbox fans come over all green and PS3 fans are expecting miracles, I am sat somewhere in-between. I expect nothing less than a number of reviews saying Killzone 2 is too grey, looks too realistic, is nothing new, etc. It is inevitable. Personally, I will be keeping an eye on a couple of mags and sites that I trust before I got overly excited. The only thing that I know is that the visuals and sound are fantastic. So in truth, I am still unsure whether this game will live up to most peoples expectations. I'd suggest that PS3 fans stop harping on about how good it is until the reviews come in. You can guarantee that a couple of so-so reviews will be pounced on by the 360 fans. You have been warned. In probably the largest paragraph that I have ever written. Well now it is, anyway. Surely.

Yeah, OPM UK review is on the 20th of Jan, with PSW etc to follow that. People forget a significant number of people played the second beta of this game. Although that was only three maps and no single player it was bloody awesome. Of course you're going to get the normal hard-core pulling their green y fronts on over their trousers and giving their opinion. Who cares? I'll be playing Killzone 2. I'm sure CVG will balance things up soon with a "Sony In Ruins" story and the green Y-front brigade can amaze us with their intelligence and wit (or lack of).
The proof of the pudding is in the eating. I hope Killzone 2 is as good as it looks as there is nothing worse than getting all excited about something and then being disappointed when its nowhere near as good as you'd thought it would be.
Voodoo - as usual you can't find a decent comeback to an argument so railroad it with your usual anally retentive bs.
Thanks for reaffirming what we already know. your'e a sad grammer/spelling nazi with nothing of any value to say.

i am with you on this, i havent said anything to put this down recently although i have been a bit harsh in the past. my post that seems to have got voodoo going was merely a link not what i think, it seems really hard to post stuff here without someone going crazy.
i hope this is good as it makes no sense to wish ill on people just because its on a platform you dont own, also we need as many devs as we can get at the moment.

this doesnt help, people are entitled to their opinions even if they differ to yours or the norm. some people even post silly comments just to get a rise and people should really rise above them. right now i cant tell if you are posting to get a rise or not - should i have replied????
if kz2 is good it gives me another reason to buy a ps3 so even xbox owners have an interest in this game. i nearly got a ps3 a few weeks back but unfortunately i am off snowboarding and have a wedding to pay for so its on the back burner for now.

I'm genuinely looking forward to playing this but as I've stated before know that it's impossible for it to live up to the crazy amount of hype surrounding it, not helped by ridiculous over the top people on here.
As for Voodoo341, I really don't know what his problem is, it seems that every comment whether good or bad relating to the PS3 is a personal insult, sad really, but maybe one day he'll grow up and get some sort of perspective.
The only big release Xbox360 game I didn't play last year was Gears of War 2
Soooo, when you said that you just didn't like Gears and hadn't even been inspired to finish the story mode what you actually meant was that you'd in fact never played the game and based your opinion on assumptions?

muppet
Yes, crimbo, you are quite right!
Anybody who would dismiss a game so omnipotent as Gears without actually playing it does indeed deserve to be labelled a "muppet".

You didn't like Bioshock right? Would it be fair to say that FPSs aren't really 'your bag'? If so, then I see no reason why KZ2 will set your world on fire.
And just because theres a war on means the sun cant shine?
That's right. Read the back story before commenting.
Backstory what backstory? The suns backstory? You have me confused im afraid.... ..Oh wait you thought i was attacking killzone 2? Thats a symptom of fanboyism, i'd have that checked if i was you.
