DSi starts 2009 strongly in Japan

Handhelds highlight big opening sales week
Nintendo platforms, and specifically DSi, have started 2009 as they finished 2008 - brightly, as if we'd expected anything else.

DSi claimed top spot in the hardware chart for the week ended January 4, notching up an impressive 180,000 plus sales.

Sony's handheld wasn't too far behind, with almost 160,000 units shifted.

Wii was the first-placed home console, moving 120,000 units, around double PS3's total of 60,000, which in turn was three times more than Xbox 360 managed.

Older systems performed well too, with DS Lite managing to rack up almost 50,000 sales and PS2 12,500.

Here are the exact numbers, courtesy of Media Create:

DSi- 182,518
PSP- 157,088
Wii- 119,965
PS3- 60,654
DS Lite- 48,160
Xbox 360- 19,694
PS2- 12,548

He's not looking like one. He is one. But he the people's fanboy and if he doesn't get to type a lower case 'b' in square brackets once a day, then he believes microsoft will take over the entire world.

Ever get the feeling he's been trying to fend off the wrong front. standing at the top of the fort staring into the distance looking for MS shock troops while the entire Nintendo army walked in through the back gate and killed everyoone.

They left him in his tower. He was a good guard and one day MS might come. unlikely though. not this generation.

I think it's also due to being so much of a fanboy he's adopting Sony's PR tactics. If they can't justify why they're doing so crap, they'll try avert the attention by slagging Microsoft by pointing out one of their minor flaws Wink

...Sony's PR tactics. If they can't justify why they're doing so crap...

I am getting really fed up with this constant Sony bashing.
I am going to sound like a right Sony fan boy for pointing out these things, but I am tired of these unjustifed digs at a company that has done a lot for this industry.

SONY ARE DOING CRAP! Hold on, the PS3 has sold faster than either the PS2 or 360.
THERES NO GOOD GAMES FOR THE PS3! Now this is just a rubish lazy comment. LBP won pretty much every video game award last year, Killzone 2 turned out to actually be really good. Motorstorm, Uncharted, Wipeout HD, Resistance 2.
--------------
I mean how can you look at those sales figures and say that Sony are doing bad? Are you blind or are just acting like an anti-fanboy becuase you like acting like a sheep and copying the actions of some of the clowns on the internet?

DSi- 182,518 - ofc a new machine is going to sell well during its opening period, its new!
PSP- 157,088 - second place, i'd say that pretty damn good. 25,430 less than a new release.
Wii- 119,965 - And so Nintendos well crafted machine rolls on, well done lads. A machine that is widely brought by all sorts of people, not just gamers.
PS3- 60,654 - So if you look at that figure and think that is a huge flop compaired to the Wii, then you need to consider how you look at things. Yes that is half the above figure but the Wii is brought by everyone, not just gamers. This super extended market is really a new thing to the industry. Last gen, if you sold 60,000 machines in a week you knew you were doing well.
DS Lite- 48,160 - So should we add this figure and the DSi total together? No, not yet. After about a month and all the people that buy every new gadget have got one then its fair to add the two totals together as then it will give you a proper indication on how many people this week have decided that they want a DS of some sort.
