Game director Bruce Straley has given CVG some insight into how Uncharted 2's AI will make for a much more challenging experience.
The game's new stealth element has inspired Naughty Dog to create some very lifelike enemies. "As a result of expanding our gameplay to account for action-stealth, there are two new behaviours added to enemies, 'investigate' and 'hunt,'" Straley told us.
"With 'investigate' the enemies have peripheral vision just like humans. When Drake enters this peripheral vision the enemies will look over in the direction they think they saw him in and depending on how long he was in this vision cone, they may just look or they may walk over and check out what they think they saw.
"With the 'hunt' behaviour the enemies have already spotted Drake and are in combat with him. While in combat the enemies make certain assumptions on where Drake is based on his last known location.
"If they lose eye contact with Drake for a few seconds, one or more enemies will start hunting around the area, starting with his last known location, and then spread their search out if he's not found."
He continued: "If they are to hunt for Drake they'll need the ability to climb on the environment, jump across gaps, and drop down from ledges to get to him. The benefit to this was our combat wasn't limited to flat terrain anymore."
If you liked that there's plenty more to come. Look out for part one of our awesome chat with Straley tomorrow.
None of that sounds particularly new, as said above, Assassins Creed had quite a sophisticated AI for enemies in a very similar sounding mould. Such a shame that game got so repetitive…
so pretty much identical to Manhunt then. except it sounds less advanced as if the guards in that so much as hear you they are onto you like a pack of rabbid dogs.
Man that headline was misleading. cunjured up images of my PS3 telling me. 'you don't want to do that'
I liked the AI in Uncharted one quite a bit. They generally had far too much health on higher difficulties (They'd take several headshots to drop with some weapons), but they were quite good at flanking you out in the combat areas. I do like the sound of the new ideas though, should mean the game flows much more. The original did fall a bit too often into the "Jumping bit - Open Space with Cover for Combat - Jumping bit" layout.
some other ways of triggering the guards peripheral vision (And presumably sound) sensors would be cool. The old "Flicking a coin into the corner of the room" trick would fit Drake right down to the ground.
This game must be quite well on in development. Really looking forward to playing it. The first one was brilliant and I would recommend it to any new PS3 owners.
the AI was pretty good in the first game i thought.. they would always seeks you out forcing you to into a close quarters scrap.
and slightly (un)related, killzone 2's AI, if an enemy is running for cover and you spray bullets on the ground in front of them, they will do a one-eighty and scarper back to where the came from, nice. just read that elsewhere.

Thanks... I'm going to die so many times now trying to find that out
sounds good i guess but i hope the stealth element doesnt hurt the game. i also think the AC ai wasnt that good at all (or mayb too good) and became really annoying, i mean why would some1 notice you if u were riding your horse in unpopulated areas a tad too fast and dont u think its a bit more suspicious if im carrying an bottomnal of weapons on my back than say if i just run a bit. anyways i hope tht shot is in game coz tht looks gorgeous.

you must be s**te then.
throw an uncooked grenade at the cover the enemy has just run out from, then spray the ground in front of them forcing them back into the grenade or to be cut down. see what they decide.
I loved the first one but not enough puzzles. Gun fights were great though and story was entertaining. Can they make the AI run away and call for back up? Oh but that would be like metal gear solid...
There might be an outside chance that it could get a PC release like God or War 3 though.
Now I'm not saying that you're wrong...
However, had I come on here a year or two ago and predicted that Final Fantasy, MGS, and Tekken were all coming to 360 I would've had my bottom kicked across all four corners of the globe.
Sounds like more gameplay for MGS4 to me.....never a bad thing, it needed it badly. Drake won't just be about run > shoot > cover > repeat anymore, there'll be tactical stealth, squad behaviors and genuine evasion. He's no Solid Snake, so that's going to create a challenge for anyone coming into this thinking they can rambo their way through the game like you can in MGS4. I can't wait- an essential essential game for PS3 players and fans of action/stealth in general. It'll certainly tide me over until the announcement of the next true Metal Gear game. (Even if it is going to star Raiden.)
Wow he doesn't actually make the AI in Uncharted 2 sound good at all...
I thought the AI in the first game was pretty awful. I hope that stupid sidestep they used so often gets taken out. Despite the bad AI is was a pretty good game though, I'll buy the sequel if reviews suggest it offers more of the same.

is mgs going to the 360?? not being sarcastic just hadnt heard anything above speculation.
Well done for using a 12 year old system that was first seen in mgs, you must feel rather clever. Jesus do you really get paid for copying old games? GET A REAL JOB AND COME UP WITH SOME ACTUAL NIQUE GAMEPLAY!
I loved the first game, I really did. But if you’re going to try and emulate MGS then I won’t even bother because it will be rubbish. I know it’s harsh but I will just keep comparing game play to that of mgs and frankly there will only be one winner. Stick to what works lads.
