Confirmed: No FFXIII until 2010

Square Enix boss delivers crushing blow
Deep down we all kind of knew it, but now it's official. Final Fantasy XIII won't be released anywhere outside Japan until 2010.

Yoichi Wada, president of Square Enix, confirmed the painful wait won't come to an end until at least April 2010 for western fans of the series.

Plans for the game to launch in Japan remain the same, although there's still no specific date, which we assume means its not likely to arrive until the back end of this year.

No reason was given for the long wait for the West, but FF fans will know that translating the game's mammoth script will have something to do with it.

Why, in this day and age of global launches, Square hasn't got a translation department churning out our words in parallel to the game's Japanese development cycle, we don't know...

On a brighter note, Wada also told Reuters: "The sluggish economy has not hurt us that much yet." Always good to hear.

Yes, why haven't they got a team of people translating sambo ingredients in this day and age of "global lunches". Another fine example of CVG editorial.

I havent been excited for a FF game for a good few years now but this new title has bucked that trend and got me pretty hyped for it.

Hopefully this will be the first true JRPG of this Generation, it looks frigging beautiful anyway.

I can wait.

But seriously, is it that hard for a huge developer like SE to get some frickin translators eh?

Tossers. After all these years and all the money they made why can't afford a team of translators.

"Why do the japs get everything first?"

Maybe, perhaps, because they developed it!?
Karis on 16 Jan '09
Do people really believe it takes over a year to translate text? Rubbish - Google can do it in seconds!

More like the multi-format farce has scuppered this game for anybody outside of Japan.

My JRPG hopes in 2009 lie with WKC now. Square haven't made a decent RPG in years.

Laughing Yeah, that was a beauty of a slip up by CVG there.

As for the translating part if the final script is completed and can be sent electronically or even via regular post mail then I know for a fact that the translation could be carried out while the Japanese voice recording efforts are taking place. Granted, there might still be a delay in the Western release date compared to the Japanese one once you factor in voice-overs but that's not part of the translation process itself. That's the technical audio and/or creative studio department's turf.

Automated translating programs are utter rubbish (check out Babelfish sometime if you're in doubt). It's one of those areas where humans with the proper mastery of a chosen language and with a grasp of the finer cultural nuances in a given language leave Google and such in the dust. You are correct though: It doesn't take a year to translate even if we're talking about millions of words...Unless of course they ensist on using the same translator for every single bit of text as opposed to spreading the workload across multiple translators which does increase the risk of differing written styles. Then again, this is a computer game and not a safety/technical/military manual where lives may be at stake.

They managed to give Last Remnant a worldwide release. Why they didn't think to do it for thier biggest global franchise is beyond me.

Also if you want a true JRPG i think you don't have to look anyfurther than Mistwalker considering they are the team that came up with pretty much every major JRPG series in history.

Lost Oddyssey was more of a Final fantasy than XIII ever will. Hope it gets a sequel.
WHERESMYMONKEY on 16 Jan '09
I dunno about "the good grace of the west" as GTA IV took it's sweet time getting published by Capcom in the east but I imagine the delay is probably down to translation issues.

I mean, they have to translate the script, record the translated dialogue, change the in game text, etc. so it's a big job for something like FF.

And it's possible that porting FF may take extra time too but imagine we should be hearing more on how the porting is coming along soon enough to give the console zealots ammunition...

So I take this means that the 360 version will not be out until 2011 at least then. Crying or Very sad

What about Star Ocean? Must admit like yourself to not being too impressed by the JRPG's we've had so far but I have got my fingers crossed for that one, WKC looks not to bad as well.

yeah but when a game is made in the west.we have the good grace to launch it world wide at the same time.

Sometimes. Just look at FO3: that didn't launch until Dec. 2008 in Japan if I'm not mistaken.

But we're talking about at least 5 months difference - if we're lucky. That's a hell of a long time in comparison.

A massive blow indeed, for everyone that has been trying to defend/justify/reason Square's recent releases and the strategy of going multiplat with just possibly and more to the point arguably the most important videogame of this generation.

It may seem petty to be annoyed about a game like this being accessable to more players, and I accept that point of view as being valid, however, we've already seen the implications of companies with little experience deciding to go multiplat with their titles; If Fallout 3 showed us anything, it's that quality inevitably suffers when you overstretch yourself. PS3 360 and PC versions of that game one and all had problems and bugs inexcusable in this day and age of bigger budgets, larger teams, more sophisticated programming techniques and a mass market larger than ever before. If anything, AAA games like this of such poor quality (Technically, the game ITSELF is brilliant.) should show us that in the persuit of profits these companies are losing their focus on quality and worrying more about quantity; and are subscribing to the 'If there's problems, screw it; we'll patch it in 3 months time AFTER the sales figures come out and please our shareholders!!' school of gamemaking that Bethesda made so blisteringly apparent with Fallout 3, and EA before them did with certain PC titles over the last few years.

Just a quick word on the 360's credentials to play this game as it's meant to be played; I have no doubt that the graphics chip can handle this game, that much is clear from the fact that on many multilat titles, the 360 has beaten the PS3 in graphics tests on many games. Bioshock was close, but that was because it was developed and tweaked specifically on PS3 to draw out more power. Again, Fallout 3 is the chief example right now as it's the newest multiplat symultaneous release: There are graphics comparisons on Gamespot especially that show the 360 beating the PS3 on detail and shading, wheras the PS3 has a higher draw distance and more realistic lighting.

The anti aliasing on 360 is certainly more apparently at work, and that's very necessary on a console like that that relies on its shooters etc. However. I'm worried about the lack of processing power, I'm worried about the Hard Drive support being optional and the game turning out as clunky as the non-patched version of Lost Odyssey. (A truly great game of course, AND it's a great game in it's own right, it was free of the hype and the constraints of Square-Enix, they were able to make a story and gameplay system that stands up on it's own without FF brand power.) because the 360 doesn't seem to like caching game files from the disc. PS3 on the other hand has Hard Drive support as part of the system ethos, and as such will be a much smoother experience as a whole if some serious optimisation isn't done on 360. I guess we have to adopt a 'wait and see' attitude towards this, but it's us as customers that will have to choose in the end.

What can I say, it looks biased, however, I don't own a PS2 or PS3 and regularly play X-Box and PC. I see the shortcomings of the 360 though, not least from Fallout 3 which seemed to show the system hit a ceiling as far as multiplatform goes (I noticed however that specific exclusives on both powerhouse consoles tend to be much much better optimised and better made games. Not a single glitch or graphical error did I find in either Fable 2 on XBox or MGS4 for PS3.)and that might just swing it in Sony's favour- however, that's off issue. The real issue is when we're going to see this game- they still say the Japan target is still on- if that's true then it would be a massive failure on Squeenix's part not to use
the time to optimise and improve the product. (And that's what they see this as, a product.)

If FFXIII fails, then it will have been the last straw for us gamers that were burned by FFXII, a game full of grind and borrowed ideas that failed in every respect to live up to its own high standards. Most of us will be watching eagerly to see if Lost Odyssey 2 will be announced anyway, because even if Final Fantasy forgets how JRPGs are supposed to be, Mistwalker at least will stick to their guns.

We'll see how FFXIII shapes up, but I'll tell you now, I'm not too excited anymore about this game, more anxious- too many lies and too many changes to the original plan for my liking. Having to wait yet another year for a game that was originally projected by certain figures in the company for 'Final Quarter 2008' (Albeit very tentatively.)is a wee bit much for this gamer; I hope Square pleasantly suprise me come release time. I really really do. It'll either be the greatest game (For fans of the genre of course.) of all time, or a roving disappointment with a shiny new coat.....time will tell.

So I take this means that the 360 version will not be out until 2011 at least then. Crying or Very sad

Actually, Square have already confirmed that they'll be doing a simultaneous worldwide release of both versions- Japan gets it first of course because they're not getting a 360 version, and they have confirmed that the PS3 version will be completed before they get to work porting it to 360. I'm 100% certain that the porting process is the reason for the international delay, and I did predict this when the news broke a few monrths back that it was no longer an exclusive. I hope they use the extra time and polish and bugfix the PS3 version to death so that the 360 version can be ported without a hitch, but knowing them, they'll get the Japanese version out as soon as it's ready, and keep our versions in Dev while the sales in Japan make the company look good.

Subtitles would be great because I hate dubbed voices anyway, the same as I do with films. And if that was the case, I would imagine that it would be the best selling import game ever. It would be like trying to find hen's teeth!

There are tonnes of "exceptions". Another two I that spring to mind are Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and Mirror's Edge, both release in Japan a month after they came out in North America.

And let's not forget, Dead Space hasn't been released in Japan at all, nor will it ever be.

Oversimplification and insult will get you no-where.

1. I'm an X-Box 360 and PC user who doesn't own a PS3 nor wants one until it has a good library of games, in much the same way I waited for the PS2 to pick up when it came out. Calling me some sort of PS3 fanboy is indeed wrong.

2. I'm against multiplatform AAAs, not necessarily multiplatform mainstream titles.

3. Stop putting words in my mouth, I said Fallout 3 was glitchy on all systems, with inexcusable and intolerable- you discerned 'Better on PS3' because you WANTED me to say that. I also said that on GFX comparisons the XBOX looks better, with better antialiasing and shading. PS3's draw distance may be higher, but the low amount of antialiasing (Since I'm talking to someone who clearly doesn't know, yet sees fit to comment to try to make a dick out of me.) makes building edges, tree branches and other such graphics appear jagged, rather than smooth. At no point did I say PS3 beats XBOX at this game, I said that it was a flawed multiplat AAA.

4. A general observation that Lost Odyssey 2 would be more appealing to me, but a complete lack of understanding that I want FFXIII to be a good game.

5. You've oversimplified and in most cases completely misinterpreted or misread my post......if you don't like it or don't want to make an effort to read it then don't- it's simple. No need for your insulting wording at all.

I tried but I had to accept defeat. Had to leave the office and have a ciggie to refresh myself!

I got as far as him saying there are no graphical glitches in Fable 2, at which point I fell off my chair. Amazing game, but buggy/glitchy as hell and I don't know if it's me, but since the DLC it all seems slower - everything, the menus, slow down in the game etc.

I hope that's not a sign of whats in store for you....
My one runs better than before, even though I deleted it from the hdd.

You mean a RRoD? I kinda hope it does before April as I can swap it for a new (hopefully more reliable!) one from Game straight away.

It's installed on my HDD too because it's so bloody noisy on the DVD - which from googling doesn't seem to be restricted to me!

Happened to me two weeks before Xmas. It had the same symptoms you're on about.
MS were quick though, and I got it back in 9 days.
New one runs smooth and quietly.

I expected this deep down. We never see a western version of FF until at least 6-8 months after it's Japanese release.
Still, in this day and age they should be getting it translated as the game is developed, especially if they really want to make serious profit from the western market.
As for the people saying it's been delayed because of the 360 version, lol. That's just like when 360 owners were saying the same thing about GTA4 and how it was delayed because it ran like s**te on PS3. Get real... Rolling Eyes

Maybe this extra time will be good for the game. I mean normally SE games have utterly awful voice acting in the translations. I don't know what the Japanese ones are like, but the people they get in for the English port are always unbearable.

That's one of the main reasons I can't play JRPGs. It just drives me nuts and makes my wrists twitch.

Maybe if they spend a year finding people who can actually DO voice acting without sounding like they're reading a menu, forcing far too much emphasis on EVERY... SINGLE... WORD... we might end up with the quality of voice acting we can find in things like GTA and Mass Effect.

I got my 360 in April/May and one of the reasons I bought it from Game was they supposedly swap at the shop within a year on 360s. So I've got a few months for it to die as yet!

I'm still waiting for MS to send me my transfer kit for my 60GB HDD (silly price, but not too bad when I can sell my 20GB drive for Ł20 and Ł10 for 3 months live and Ł10 for the headset, with the vouchers I got for xmas, I will actually get a fiver in me pocket!). Although the person at the call centre didn't really seem to know what she was doing!

Crossing my fingers will not make playing games any easier in the meantime.

No need for your insulting wording at all.

pffft. lighten up guy.

Half the reason is of course that despite Final Fantasy being a huge franchise in the west, it being released near the Christmas period in the west would be retail suicide, it just wouldn't compete with the Guitar Heros and CODs. In Japan though Final Fantasy is almost a way of life so everyone from two year olds to their grandma's will be buying it. Have people forgotten the slew of AAA titles that got released just before Christmas 2008 and seriously underperformed?!

Do people really believe it takes over a year to translate text? Rubbish - Google can do it in seconds!

More like the multi-format farce has scuppered this game for anybody outside of Japan.

My JRPG hopes in 2009 lie with WKC now. Square haven't made a decent RPG in years.

Rubbish SE have shown nothing from this title really, no one is surprised by the 2010 date that has been rumoured for ages now. Nothing to do with multi-format.

So none of the 360 exclusive JRPG's take your fancy then?

Heres a slight glimmer of hope for all those that are so sorely disappointed by the announced delay:

Taken from MCVUK:

Japanese publisher responds to reports claiming RPG will not arrive in Europe until 2010
Japanese developer and publisher Square Enix has told MCV that the European release date for Final Fantasy FXIII has yet to be decided.

The comments come after a Forbes interview with Square Enix president Yoichi Wada in which it is claimed that the exec stated that the game would be released in 2009 in Japan but would not see light of day in Europe until “the business year from April 2010 or later”.

However, a spokesperson from the European arm of Square Enix has told MCV: “The launch dates of FFXIII are still to be determined and will be revealed in due course. Please wait for future announcements.”

Square Enix rocked the world last year when it confirmed at E3 that Final Fantasy XIII would be released on Xbox 360 alongside PS3 in all territories outside of Japan – the first time a numbered FF title has not been a PlayStation exclusive at launch"

Although 2010 is more likely, who knows when it happens. As long as it's good does it matter?

People are blaming the 360 version on the delay but the FF games have always come to the west after about a year after Japan anyway. I'm sure SE would of already been working on the 360 version and have time whilst doing a EU localisation (quite a few languages to get done) on the PS version to finish it off alongside the PS3 one. Hence possibly why Japan is not getting a 360 version at all.

Only SE know the truth and as long as they deliver a first class game I can wait, as I can for any delayed game unless you are about talking some of the delayed turkeys. Cool

If they must really spend time recording an English voice track, then they had better include the Japanese track with it. Lost Odyssey did it, as did Eternal Sonata and Blue Dragon. Square-enix typically don't though, which worries me somewhat. I can't stand English dubbing!

Fair enough.

love to know how many people actualy read his post.

+1 here. I read it.

To be honest after all the comotion I read it too and I must say it was one of the most pointless comments I have ever read and was a complete waste of my time.

I guess my point is that when you post a comment here and people read nobody is going to care much, but if you post a huge 1000+ word comment not a lot of people are even going to read it.

if your 360's going while playing fable 2 it must be a common problem, because mine red-ringed after polaying it D=

Seems to be the way, but it's been hanging in there for a month or more now!

The guy in Gamestation told me it's because the gameworld is so large, the DVD drive is working overtime to load the information. Rubbish. You load new areas, it's hardly like GTA4. It goes mental as soon as you boot up the 360 with it in, even though I'm playing from the HDD!

What? As pointless as you pointing out that you read it Moth? Rolling EyesRolling Eyes

Must be easy to act the bottomhole from behind a keyboard. You didn't need to read the post if so many words offend your delicate eyes. Though quite what the f**k you're doing on a forum if you're unwilling to read text baffles and puzzles me.

Less of the bulls**t, I said what I felt needed to be said about the game itself, at least it was on topic though, unlike half of your posts here.

It would make sense that they want to release it multiplatform on the same date outside of Japan. (Maybe because Japan is much heavier in PS3 than 360)They probably didn’t start the 360 version at the same time as the PS3 and could be the reason for the delay. Maybe MS bunged them a few dollars to hold it back for a multiplatform release?

I reckon MS see this as a big PS3 seller and probably why they went after it. TBH though, Im not at all excited about this either way. The games got a bit dull after FF VII.
