Japan: Wii falling close to the PS3

Total hardware sales take another drop
Total hardware sales took another expected slump for the week ending Jan 18, this time dropping from 248,694 sales to reach 192,252; a decline of 23 percent.

The chart arrangement remains the same as it's been for a number of weeks now, while the decline in weekly turnover is largely proportional to the total volume of sales for each console.

The DSi, topping the chart with some 62,000 sales, has seen a weekly drop of around 16,000; while bottom of the next-gen list is the Xbox 360 (5,760), which saw sales drop by as little as 1,000.

Above the Xbox 360 is the DS Lite, which in turn dropped about 4,500. Above the DS Lite is the PS3, which dropped around 7,500. Above the PS3 is the Wii, which saw weekly sales fall some 9,000, and above the Wii, the PSP was stung by a weekly drop of 18,000.

The structure of these losses go some way in showing that no particular console seems to be declining in appeal, but rather Japan is currently less interested in buying luxury goods, having just splurged throughout the holiday weeks.

Considering its price-point, Sony's PS3 appears to have made the best impression. Though it continues to double the weekly turnover of the Xbox 360, Sony may be more interested in the fact that the console is now just 12,000 sales behind the Wii; the closest it has been to the home console market leader in months.

Nintendo, however, may be anxious about sales of the Wii, which have fallen disproportionately against the overall hardware decline. Two weeks ago Media Create reported it had sold close to 90,000 units more than its current rate.

A clearer picture of Sony's, and indeed its Nintendo's, performance will be established when Japanese consumers' expenses become more balanced.

Full list for the week ending Jan 18 according to Media Create:

DSI 62,525
PSP 42,559
Wii 32,333
PS3 20,690
DS Lite 18,809
Xbox 360 9,576
PS2 5,760

And for the first time ever I post first on a thread!! yipeeeeeeeeeeeee
(grammar?)

Anyway as a Sony fanboy this is pleasing news, catching up on the horrid wii's weekly sales. Why xbox and PS3 owners insult each other all the time is beyond me, when the wii is the real threat to the proper games we all like to play.
For example can you ever imagine Dead Space on the 'gamecube in disguise'?

Surely it's because almost everyone in Japan owns one now. Maybe it's time to bring it out in different colours, or the WiiII

Console sales in post-Christmas decline shocker...
milky_joe on 24 Jan '09
Y is the word fanboy always used on this forum?? Im 29 been gaming since the I was 8, got no loyalty 2 any 1 company! Im just a gamer full stop, don't care who win this gen! Y can't people just enjoy what each system, has 2 offer!!
kyoto on 24 Jan '09
Well somewhere there you've made a mistake CVG. You say Xbox 360 is bottom of the next gen charts with a total of 5760 but that's where the PS2 is in the chart you made. Which is it? A 9576 seems quite healthy in a territory it doesn't do well in.
wrightandrewjame on 24 Jan '09
The did say 'next gen' charts, PS2 is from the previous gen so it doesn't count.
clifton on 24 Jan '09

It's total hardware sales not 'next gen' sales. CVG are just comparing the 'next gen' consoles in the chart.

What is the most likely outcome?

Nintendo to drop the price of the Wii in Japan to continue it's momentum.

Is the Wii lacking decent third party software to back up the first party efforts?
ie, a repeat of the last gen.
petrolhead on 24 Jan '09
Can I just take a second to laugh at the "catching up with the Wii" comment... Not so much catching up with the wii as falling behind still, just falling behind more slowly now. Still falling behind mind.

I always love these sales figures things, I think they're great. Give me more. Or even add them all up and give me some global numbers, maybe compare the current ones with the same period in the last console generation and the generation before that... Man, a pie chart or a bar chart even would be fantastic. Shocked

Sorry to burst your bubble but PS3 sales have not risen the Wii's have come down. Also never put the idea in my head of dead space on the Wii /me shudders.

Sadly it's looking that way, even though I knock/mock the Wii I do respect that people like it for what it is. Just a shame that 3rd party support has been dire but then one question I do have what happened to Nintys approval process seemed good on the SNES (hardly any really dodgy titles got through), now they seem content on just filling the games library no matter what.
lonewolf2002 on 24 Jan '09
Yes you're right Lonewolf but still the Wii is shifting less units so thats some good news.

Hold on, did you just call the Wii a threat to gaming because it attracts casual players?

What the bloody hell was the PlayStation? How do you think that and its successor did so well? I guess as a Sony fanboy you're just jealous, huh? There wouldn't even be a PlayStation without Nintendo, so think about that, sir.

Oh, and I'm a multi-format gamer, before you ask.

Not for Ninty Wink

As long as all 3 stay for another round I'll be happy.

Got to admit though the good titles are quite few and far between on the Wii and 3rd party has been severly lacking in quality, although 2009 is looking better gamewise for the Wii in my book.

In fact 2009 looks like a stonking year for all consoles. Looks like I'm going to be a 2nd hand buyer for a while, too many good titles due. Maybe I should try and have multiple birthdays.

Very true, Sony we're working on the drive for Nintendo before Ninty decided they didnt want it anymore. So i guess without Nintendo deciding to stay with an archaic format we wouldn't have had PS1, 2 or 3? Guess that makes them my favourite s**t-outs Wink

In my opinion, Dead Space on the wii would be a hell of a lot better to play with the pointer than dual analogues of the 360/PS3.
ricflair on 25 Jan '09
Under 10,000 360s sold in Japan that month? I've almost bought that many myself due to the RROD! ;^)

yeah but the wii couldnt handle it because its about as powerful as a cupcake, ive yet to see anythin on the system thats looks better visually than ancient gran turismo 4, last gen res 4 is probably its best looking game.

plus unreal engine 3 does not and never will exist on the wii according to Epic Laughing

I think stupid comments like this one and the original poster's are rather quite funny. Get over yourselves guys! Just cos your console of choice isn't 'winning', so what? I was never a fan of the then so called powerful PS2 but I never stooped to saying things like this. I must have been closer to your age at that time as well.

The truth is, the PS3 is hardly ever to catch the Wii's lead. Who gives a crap about an oversized door stop?

And Chirs 'ace', Mario Galaxy's graphics were better than GT4's. The Wii will get its time. For people who go on about variety, its not like the other two formats have such a big difference between them. Particularly the 360's American approach. Oh, and by the way, this is not fan boy talk. Just trying to open the eyes of the deluded fools who post on here all the time...

I dont care about the graphics that much. If a game is good, it's good. It's hardly like playing old MD games with jerky, super basic graphics.

Of course I like having great graphics, but they are a bonus as far as I'm concerned. That said make a wii mote style pointer for the 360 and options for the controls and then I can have it all!!!
ricflair on 25 Jan '09
My point was that the stunning graphics of dead space are not possible on the wii, nor the amazing sound.

I've just been having a chat with my housemate, who says that the 'Wii' is fine for you're typical gormless 2.5(.2 .3 whatever) family, but for Proper skillful gaming stick to the other two....

Utter garbage!! Twilight Princess, Galaxy and Metroid Corruption require infinately more thought and skill than the 360's bog-standard blast-fests.

I'm a multi-format gamer, but Wii has some of the very best hardcore, third party releases of 2009. That's not to say I'm not looking forward to stuff on my 360 and PS3, but MadWorld, Fatal Frame 4, House of the Dead Overkill, Sin+Punishment 2, Dead Rising, Tenchu 4, Monster Hunter 3, No More Heroes 2, Red Steel 2, The Conduit and others are very tasty propositions.

Well, that's very nice for you and your housemate - but, it doesn't make it true.

It seems to me as if you're confusing graphical muscle with demanding software...which tends to be the way with the Wii.

I think it's fair to criticise the sheer amount of shovelware that some of the third-parties have wheeled out to the Wii, but that doesn't make it a non-capable machine. Some of the biggest gaming highlights of the past two years have appeared on the console (Mario Galaxy, No More Heroes etc), so I think that dismissing the Wii - just because it has things like Wii Fit and Big Brain Academy - is a bit like biting your nose off to spite your face.....well, if you consider yourself a 'hardcore' gamer (I hate that term!)

Smile

Typical deluded fool. And how I laugh at YOUR definition of 'proper' gaming. Yes dear Rolling Eyes

Also, you're pretty bad at the old grammar (not surprising). I've used the right word in my post. Can you spot where?

I thought everyone had a Wii by now in Japan. I guess there are still people converting out there.
