A new study at the University of Rennes in France has found that, contrary to Nintendo's claims, DS brain training titles won't necessarily make you brainier if you play them every day.
Alain Lieury, professor of cognitive psychology at the university, carried out a series of memory tests on children that had been learning with DS for seven weeks and those that hadn't.
Nintendo claims that its edutainment titles, like Brain Training and Big Brain Academy, can improve blood flow to the brain and thereby improve "practical intelligence", and that they can make users "two to three times better in tests of memory", according to The Times.
However, Lieury concluded that Brain Training was no better at stimulating memory than the humble pen and paper combo we used at school, and he had some pretty damning stuff to say about the title.
"The Nintendo DS is a technological jewel. As a game it's fine," he says in 'Stimulate Your Neurones', a book due out this month. "But it is charlatanism to claim that it is a scientific test.
"There were few positive effects and they were weak. Dr Kawashima is one of a long list of dream merchants," Lieury adds.
Helping kids with their homework, reading, playing Scrabble or Sudoku or watching documentaries matched or beat playing on DS, he concluded. What say you?
hey u....WHERESMYMONKEY is a gaming professional, always posting on here, what he says goes, he doesnt need higher education or studies to prove what he says is true, because it is true as he says so, so there, like all the posters here, they dont need higher education qualifications or studies to call a proffesor an idiot, although there are a few professors that are, oh I MSC btw, but Brain Training doesnt improve your brain, wii fit doesnt make you fit, they are games not devices to improve your brain/fitness...

how dare some one question the might of DR karasima lol,he is a professor and then end of day its just one professor disagreeing with another ,well i bet this games has worked for some and lots of adults got it.
Whilst I doubt Brain Training has the effects Nintendo claim it does, I always read what an 'expert' in the field says with a pinch of salt, when they're trying to plug their new book at the same time.
Also, have we already forgotten this article? Some Professors ARE idiots!! http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=206574
I read the article in the newspaper and apparently their studies showed that in 2 of the 3 tests Brain Training did show improvements (one was lowered) though kids just doing puzzles with pencils and those that went to school were higher.
Though to me it sounds like the kids must of been beaten until they showed better improvements or the woman made the figures up to try and get kids back into school
i'm sure the creator would like a few words. But wasn't this merely an electronic version of his book anyway? So really it doesn't matter what medium you use by dr kawashima it still will get the supposed results.
I think another point he doesn't highlight is that it might be a way to encourage people to "learn" elearning is genrally a handy tool for education. Hell i did a dissertation on elearning and the such and generally many people seem to think its a good idea.
But in the end, nintendo nor kawashima would really care. They;ve made millions and spawned a new group of games. f**k what the frenchman says. Can't beat results. In cash.
