Study: DS Brain Training "doesn't work"

"Dr Kawashima is one of a long list of dream merchants," says professor
A new study at the University of Rennes in France has found that, contrary to Nintendo's claims, DS brain training titles won't necessarily make you brainier if you play them every day.

Alain Lieury, professor of cognitive psychology at the university, carried out a series of memory tests on children that had been learning with DS for seven weeks and those that hadn't.

Nintendo claims that its edutainment titles, like Brain Training and Big Brain Academy, can improve blood flow to the brain and thereby improve "practical intelligence", and that they can make users "two to three times better in tests of memory", according to The Times.

However, Lieury concluded that Brain Training was no better at stimulating memory than the humble pen and paper combo we used at school, and he had some pretty damning stuff to say about the title.

"The Nintendo DS is a technological jewel. As a game it's fine," he says in 'Stimulate Your Neurones', a book due out this month. "But it is charlatanism to claim that it is a scientific test.

"There were few positive effects and they were weak. Dr Kawashima is one of a long list of dream merchants," Lieury adds.

Helping kids with their homework, reading, playing Scrabble or Sudoku or watching documentaries matched or beat playing on DS, he concluded. What say you?

The guy's an idiot.

I know i'll take a peice of software marketed for and developed for an adult market and test it on kids.

Genius, i don't. The game doen't ever claim to make you smater, Just help you better use what you have.

From personal experience after using it for a few weeks i did feel that my mental arithmatic in particular had greatly improved.

I know one thing for sure, it's certainly helped Nintendo practise counting (the billions and trillions they must be raking in).

Move along, nothing to see here.

And in other news Wii Fit really isn't as good as the gym...

It's pretty obvious to come to the conclusion the simple exercises put in Brain Training will do nothing.

So he is an idiot is he? WHERESMYMONKEY

Children have more potential to increase mental agility than adults. So they would be a logical choice for this particular experiment.

I can only presume that a professor of cognitive psychology would know a little more about this issue than the likes of you.

He should have tested it on adults. Kids take in a lot more information than adults. That's why schooling starts so early.

GTA doesn't work either. I've been playing the series for years and I'm STILL not a murderously ruthless criminal!

Agreed, I came to the same conclusion from my own experience.

As an adult I learnt a lot from this game.

I learnt that cheaply produced tat will sell to countless non-gamers.

I learnt that good recognition software wasn't neccessary to shift huge quantities of software to the masses.

I learnt that my wife got a good deal when she sold the game at CEX.

Most importantly, I learnt that neither my wife or I had any intention of buying the sequel.

Whilst I doubt Brain Training has the effects Nintendo claim it does, I always read what an 'expert' in the field says with a pinch of salt, when they're trying to plug their new book at the same time.

Also, have we already forgotten this article? Some Professors ARE idiots!!

but Brain Training does work! you should see the speed at which I can add the most difficult sums.... eg. 1+2, 3x1. I can spell Red!
cykosis on 26 Jan '09
So Brain Training isn't too far off using a pen and paper eh?

I suppose the only thing left to consider is which is more fun...

stupid game, cant even guess my age.

Doesn't make you smarter? Well, duh!
plain_kloz_cop on 27 Jan '09
I read the article in the newspaper and apparently their studies showed that in 2 of the 3 tests Brain Training did show improvements (one was lowered) though kids just doing puzzles with pencils and those that went to school were higher.

Though to me it sounds like the kids must of been beaten until they showed better improvements or the woman made the figures up to try and get kids back into school Rolling Eyes
dark_gamer on 28 Jan '09
i'm sure the creator would like a few words. But wasn't this merely an electronic version of his book anyway? So really it doesn't matter what medium you use by dr kawashima it still will get the supposed results.

I think another point he doesn't highlight is that it might be a way to encourage people to "learn" elearning is genrally a handy tool for education. Hell i did a dissertation on elearning and the such and generally many people seem to think its a good idea.

But in the end, nintendo nor kawashima would really care. They;ve made millions and spawned a new group of games. f**k what the frenchman says. Can't beat results. In cash.
