Britrock's elder statesmen and Oasis man Noel Gallagher has once again differed with Activision's Guitar Hero, stating that "playing a guitar is not a f***ing videogame."
Speaking to CVG cousin Total Guitar magazine, Gallagher said that he thinks the music game is at least better than more traditional titles as "It's better than two goblins trying to f**k a donkey up the arse with a laser beam." Ahem.
"When I meet kids I always say to them playing a guitar is not a f*cking videogame, there is no level to get to. You'll never master it and you'll never complete the game," he said, admitting that he's yet to play Guitar Hero himself.
"I've never heard of it. I suppose I'm a bit old fashioned. Whatever your entry point into music is, it has to be a good thing. It's just so worthwhile getting into."
Last year Gallagher made similar comments, telling sister site Music Radar, "If it puts little plastic guitars into kids' hands and fires their imaginations, I think that's a good thing. It's harmless fun, innit.
"I'd rather that genre of videogames than somebody getting their f***ing head chopped off with a samurai sword while getting f****d by a goblin up the arse with a laser. Do you know what I mean?"
I think he's getting to the grumpy old man stage. At least he admits that its getting kids to play the guitar and says its a good thing. See games can be a force for good! Or an entry into sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll...
i think he's totally right, ever f.ckin freak will be upset about this fact but who cares, deal with it, playing guitar hero or some other sh.t has no meaning but masturbate your lame soul.

What? - if you're going to post ignorant statements, at least ensure that it makes some sense. Do the games you play have some kind of 'higher meaning'?
This is an old statement - to be honest, he seems to have an opinion on pretty much everything...at least he has a sense of humour about it, unlike that idiot from Nickelback.

There was me thinking I played for FUN I missed the fact that I should of been giving my soul a right hand shandy too.

Exactly.
To be fair to Noel Gallagher (and 'no' - I'm definitely not an Oasis fan), he's been asked about something that he doesn't really know anything about - and he admits to it - so, he's responding to it on face value. It's more some of the posts you get about the GH/RB games from gamers - that really should know better - that irritate...no, make that 'bore' me.
1. It doesn't claim to be a music simulator. 2. It doesn't claim to teach you how to play guitar. 3. It doesn't claim to be, in any way; as difficult as mastering an instrument.

Can we just make this a rule in these threads from now on? - it'd make things so much easier.
This man is obsessed with goblins, bottoms, and lasers.
I think it has to do with playing too many video games with the village people. Anyway lol this guy is hilarious. You got to admit he is right. I have been playing guitar for 7 years now and while GH or Rockband doesnt feel the same it is very close. And it makes you feel like your actually playing some really good song on guitar if your fingers are guitar able and can actually make you a bit advanced in finger work. I know it has for me.
Why are they saying he has "differed" with guitar hero? If anything he is saying he thinks it is a good game/idea.
His comments about playing an actual guitar not being "like a videogame" are exactly that, he is simply saying that the two aren't very similar, you don't "complete" learning to play a guitar.
To be honest, I bet it is what f1 drivers think of racing games etc... except for the fact that most of them have grown up with the idea. Guitarists/musicians are now coming face to face with the fact that their art has been reduced to 4 coloured buttons - bet it p**ses them right off!
Wow this guy is an idiot. At one point he was saying Guitar Hero was rubbish now he says it is better than a game? WTF does this guy do in his spare time?
No wonder he got attacked on stage last year, probably p**sed off a guy.

I'm with you it was more aimed at rivariad, no GH wont teach you to play the guitar yes you can have fun pretending to play if thats what takes your fancy. Personally I think RB and GH suck but plenty of people enjoy them, oh and I have never been an Oasis/gallaggher bros fan either.
When have we ever wanted to make things easy in these forums
Ive played a few of them and I can tell you they are a hell of a lot of fun!!
Anyways, back to the topic...
Why are a lot of people getting p**sy about his comments? Yes, it does descend into goblins firing laser into your ass but he does basically say that RB and GH are a great gateway into the world of music.
It's never going to be the same as playing a real guitar but it will definitely inspire some children to go out there and start playing real music. Both titles definitely relit my love of the guitar, much like the Tony Hawk titles relit my passion for skateboarding 6 months after I got over an injury!
If a handful of kids take inspiration from this Activision are a visionary company in some sense...
And I only mentioned Activision because they did RB first.
Just my opinion so go ahead and rip my comments apart...
Noel Gallagher on games Wednesday 3-Sep-2008 2:37 PM Guitar Hero better than "somebody getting their f***ing head chopped off with a samurai sword while getting f****d by a goblin up the bottom with a laser"
I recently came back from my 2nd tour of Afghanistan. By all rights I should say that playing CoD4 doesn't make you a F**king soldier but jesus, it's just good fun and nobody thinks they're SAS just because they beat Warpig on Veteran. Noel Gallager has always been a c**k - what the f**k does he know about plaing the guitar anyway, the mop headed ben sherman wearing old c*nt.
I wanna know what he's been taking or how he got his hands on a copy of Sci fi donkey f**king samurai goblins 10. I heard that game was banned in 76 countries and R* themselves pulled it from shelves in the two shops in Holland that stocked it for being to violent and er.. weird.
I've been playing guitar for about 15 years now, and I'm an avid gamer. However I've never been tempted by any GH games. To be honest, to me they look s**te. If I want to play guitar I can pick up a real one and do it properly. I understand how a lot of people don't play guitar and for them GH is a fantastic product. For me as a guitarist, it just looks like a waste of time, a bit like saying playing Pro Evo is better than playing football myself, it's just not true.
As for Noel Gallagher, I was a huge Oasis fan when they arrived on the scene and they really were an amazing band then. Over the last ten years they've been fair to middling at best, althought their last album was the best thing they've done in years. Oasis are no Radiohead, but those first two albums were amazing, and considering the s**te that passes for rock music these days perhaps some of the younger posters should give Definitely Maybe a listen and see what everyone was so excited about back in 1994.
Much as I dislike Oasis' music, I only think 2 things when I watch that clip.
1. How much of an utter moron is that Canadian guy that pushed him over? He's 45...45 years old - what was he hoping to achieve?, does he just enjoy getting a kicking from roadies? 2. That poor Gibson ES335 (I first thought it was a 345, but I can't see a stereo k**b).
Everyone knows Oasis songs only have 4 chords and totally uninteresting guitar playing. I hated them when they first arrived, I hated them when they were at the peak of their careers, I hate them now. Thankfully we don't see them in magazines or anything these days, which is why Noel here feels the need to make public statements about things that aren't his business.

True that. They should rename Wonderwall buskers choice. I know i have playing the entire song you barely cahnge chords. just moyour indes and ring fingers from between the 5th 4th and 3rd strings.
A f**king ape coupld play it!!! come to think of it...
2. That poor Gibson ES335 (I first thought it was a 345, but I can't see a stereo k**b).
That Gibson is wasted on Noel.
It's nothing on a couple of guitars I was drooling over earlier - a 1952 Les Paul Gold-Top (Ł12,000) and a 1962 Fender Stratocaster in perfect...and I mean perfect condition for a mere Ł34,000.
I think that the aticle says far more about Noel Gallagher than Guitar Hero. I play both the game and the instrument so even I'm more entitled to comment than him. Noel Gallagher is, as others have commented, a complete goon. He's criticized lots of things he knows nothing about because he's an ignorant loudmouth. And yes, that Gibson is totally wasted on such a bland guitarist. If there were 'levels' in real-life guitar playing he'd still be stuck on 'novice'.
Playing an instrument I'd also like to add isn't a job either, it's a f**king hobby that does nothing to benefit society.
I think you’ll find thousands of session musicians will disagree with you about the job part, oh and Noel himself, touring around the world is after all part of his job as it earns him money. That of course goes for all the other bands that make money, and the multi-billion worldwide industry that surrounds the ‘hobby’.
Also, claiming it does nothing to benefit society is a rather stupid comment to make. On a very general level, what about national anthems? You think that has no symbolism for a country? No benefit?
And for all the Noel detectors, he doesn’t care, if he was even aware of any of you he’d think you’re all c**ts anyway, while laughing at the fact he has so much more money than you even though you all think he is so talentless…
I'm not sure how the two can be directly compared, even though they are both called a 'guitar':
One is a musical instrument.
One is a plastic object shaped like said instrument, where you press five coloured buttons in time to on screen prompts.
It's like saying playing with a Matchbox car isn't actually driving. Bravo, well spotted, have a gold star. Sheesh...
Perhaps if Mr Gallagher concentrated on playing his guitar, instead of commenting on things he clearly has no comprehension of, then Oasis wouldn't be totally crap.
Tbh I think he was asked a question about Guitar Hero rather than him just starting a rant. You lot need to look a little closer at what was said as well. And Conkers you're right. End of.
To be fair, Noel Gallagher from the start of his success with oasis admitted being a plagarist. He also admits that he says things to get reactions in the press and it works, so none of what anyone here is accussing him of being is a secret, it's widely known fact.
I like Noel's rant's they're funny, but I simply take them at face value. I know what he's up to, seeing the rants usually happen around the time of him releaseing a single or album. All other celeb's do the same thing, only his rants are actually funny to listen to/read and usually packed full of obscenities to boot. His abuse of Blur front man Damon Albarn is legendary ("Damien All-Bran, Dermot Oblong, what's his fookin name", "I hope he get's Aids and dies", ok the aids comment will have a lot of people saying "oh you can't joke about that", but f**k it, at least he doesn't sit on the fence like the c**k artists that pass for rock stars these days. Long may he continue to rant and offend people, more power to him, freedom of speech is a bitch sometimes isn't it?
And for those people who were having a go at this musical abilities, lets see you write a song as good as Live Forever, or have B-sides on your singles that most bands would make albums out of, and then you can have a go at him.

Noel's a c**t, but at least he's honest about it.
It was a jokey comment, but I can see how it would be taken a s s**tty snide comment! I think noel is funny in interviews. As is Liam. I remember reading somewhere about him going on about Elvis and how he wiped his bottom with baby ducks, because he liked the feeling duck down as opposed to toilet paper.
Noel has written some amazing songs that I doubt any of us on here will get close to - Live Forever and Half a World Away (a bloody b side - I remember Noel saying he used great songs as bsides because he never thought he would run out of good songs!) particularly.
The Five to One intro was identical though, I was in Virgin and I thought "Cool, The Doors" then heard Liam!
Better Noel and Liam than Coldplay copying Radiohead about five years later.

Funny thing is though ive just downloaded the oasis track pack off the psn, it cost me a fiver, im guessing Oasis must have no idea their music is on GH WT........................................

I thought Noel was Mr Epiphone?
Ah, he definitely was....that's a Gibson though, rather a nice one too - I think. I'm a sucker for an ES335/345...I still rue the day that I knocked back a 60's 335 for a grand at Andy's in Denmark Street. Admittedly, I'd have been skint for a while at the time, but I'd still have that.

Bloody hell. Denmark Street is normally the most expensive place around! Especially Andy's. I've seen some of the crappier 70's Fenders in there for an absolute fortune.
When I got my Twin Reverb (brand new) I couldn't find anything in Andy's comparable with out paying a lot more money. Mind you I got it across the street for less than I could find one online!

Denmark Street is pretty good if you play them off against each other - it totally depends on what you're buying, but I get my set-ups done at Andy's....probably mostly because I see the place as a museum - they get some beautiful stuff in there.
The Twin Reverb thing doesn't surprise me - I've never really found the amp prices on Denmark Street that good....if you want to buy a Strat, you'll get it cheap (if you play them right), but amps and effects are a little more expensive there versus online prices. I'm in an odd predicament - I have a Vox 125 head...it's a great amp, it makes you sound like Mick Ronson as soon as you plug in direct...but, it doesn't work - I know the circuit boards are known to be a bit dodgy, but I really want it fixed....there's a guy down Denmark Street that knows about these amps specifically, so I may have to bite the bullet to get it working again.
In terms of the ES335:
It was back around 94-96 (I think) - it was fairly worn, as I remember - an ebony finish...I knew that it was a bargain back then, but I literally just couldn't work out a way to afford it; I didn't earn anywhere near what I earn now. Also - I was in a band back then and I remember that we had this Epiphone Sorento at the time.....bloody horrible thing it was - awful...I think that may have made me wary of semi-acoustics at the time.
It's probably a blessing in disguise, however. That Epiphone Sorento ended up being swapped for a USA Fender Strat that I still own and absolutely adore...it's a fantastic guitar, one of those that's mass produced - yet, I'd dare you to find one that sounds exactly like it...she's a real beaut.

There's this old school guy in Islington, just off Essex Road you could try. Google 'John Kelly Electronics'. A couple of places recommended him and I was going to go to him when my Twin screwed up after 18 months, but after badgering Fender they took it back and repeaired it at cost. He's good for a chat over the phone I found.
I've got a USA plus deluxe I bought of a spoiled mate who never played it for about Ł300. Locking machine heads etc. I had horrible dull lace sensors in it which I had replaced with these Kinman noise reduction pickups - they're a small aussie company I think, hand wound and quiet. Pretty nice, bridge one is really thick, but it doesn't have quite the twang. I love it still!
If you're ever looking for an overdrive pedal, try the Hot Cake. From a small kiwi company. Nice sounding and versatile. I'm thinking about getting another one: my current one which slightly dirties the clean tone of the amp and another for full on distortion instead of my old boss.

Ah, I'm in no hurry. The Vox hasn't actually worked for a good few years - I believe it's actually one of those Bass amps that people use for guitars mostly (like the Fender Bassman), so I figure it would be handy. The only problem is that it could very well be the circuit boards that's stopping it from working - they're known for not being the best 'touring' head - if it is the circuit board, it may not actually be worth getting it fixed. If you can actually find one, they're only about Ł300.

Sounds cool - especially for Ł300. You were right to get rid of the Lace Sensors though...I've never seen why people like them. My Strat lacks twang too - but, I prefer it that way. My best mate spent Ł1000 on this really great Strat a couple of years ago, but even he's noticed how much mine just seems to have a little more 'bite'.
Besides, for twang - I have a Tele and a great semi-acoustic (Ibanez Artcore) that can be picked up for next to nothing....they're really worth checking out if you're looking for a Semi-acoustic, but don't want to pay Gibson prices. I really rate it.

I've actually found myself cutting back more and more on the effects side. I started out with a Zoom 8080, which is stupidly over-complicated and the actual sounds just aren't very good. I now use a few Boss pedals, a Cry-Baby and that's it. I do tend to like cleaner sounds and I found this really odd little combo made by a company called Session that has a seriously great clean tone. I know absolutely nothing about the history of the amp or company, but it's a great little amp.

Beeauutiful!!
I would be happy with a Gibson Les Paul Classic myself. Thrilled, in fact. It will be mine... oh yes... it will be mine... *drools*
I, being a pauper could only afford a Mexican Stratocaster 14 years ago
