Half of that budget will go on promoting Killzone 2, so don't expect to turn on the TV, browse the web, go to the cinema or open the paper without seeing those menacing orange Helghan eyes staring back at you.
"In the case of Killzone 2 it has become clear to everyone who has seen it that we have a truly great product on our hands," SCEE marketing director Alan Duncan told MCV.
"The great thing is it has lived up to that original billing and in doing so it brings a new energy to the most competitive genre. We need to prove that to as many people as possible, hence the massive campaign."
The rest of the kitty will be spent on advertising Sony's Q1 PSP range, which includes Resistance Retribution and Buzz! Brain, as well as SingStar Queen for PS2 and PS3.
"SingStar Queen"?! I dunno man...Ok. So there may be people out there who are drawn to that type of game and perhaps it might even be fun under the right circumstances, but is that a title that's capable of carrying the PS brand? Wouldn't the money perhaps be put to more effective use advertising other games? *shrugs* Oh well. Not my decision and I don't have all the details. I would normally say I guess the Sony brass know what they are doing but in light of their recent abysmal profits and sales performances I'm not so sure anymore.
P.S. The beefy KZ2 advertisement coffer makes sense.
Personally, I would really like to know how much the KZ2 development has actually cost Sony? Considering it's been in development 3+ years, with probably a very sizable team. Perhaps CVG would be kind enough to make some enquiries on that subject? (you know, like some investigative journalism? )
Considering this game is supposed to set the new bench mark for production value in games, I think it would be nice to know how much of an investment a game of this quality actually takes.
I never really understood the concept of the "Halo Killer" game. I mean, is it a game that's meant to do what Halo does but better or is it just meant to be a game with huge hype matched by massive sales? Regardless, I was sceptical of Killzone 2 after the mudane Killzone but I've slowly been drawn to it and I now think it's going to be a brilliant game. Plus, this period is an excellent time to launch it as it'll only have to compete with Street Fighter IV and, if the sales remain strong, CoD: WaW.
wasting their money advertising buzz, or psp software, psp sales fairly strong world wide.
how about advertising bastions like metal gear solid, wipeout, siren, resistance 2, motorstorm 2. Quality titles they released in the last 12 months but didnt bother advertising, while microsoft spend good money advertising the likes of lego batman and tomb raider
I'll believe it when I see it -- I've hardly seen any PS3 adds, apart from the pre-launch 'This is living' crap. Perhaps they should change the PS3 slogan to 'This isn't selling'...
Possibly. But i don't rate Halo that high. Now if they said it was better than Bioshc**k, then i'd stand up and take notice.
On the Marketing front though. About f**king Time. Hopefully they'll use the cash for a TV campain rather than the pathetic one that we got at the cinema for LBP and Resistance.
Still think a price drop wouldn't hurt though. only a lil one. PS3 and the game for Ł250 + a decent add campain and sony i'll be laughing.
All the "Halo Killer" talk... It didn't need to do much to beat Halo really. Loads of games are better than Halo now. Chances are it won't outsell Halo 3. Anyway its good to see that Sony are going to advertise their products for once. Starting to think that they didn't want to sell anything. And yeah JIGSAW they need to advertise the back catalogue a little. There were a few ads for Metal Gear, but I didn't see any for the other games. They need to take a leaf out of Microsoft and Nintendo's book and advertise their best games!
anyone remember when killzone 1 came out, and had a similar amount of hype. and then failled to live up to that hype(not saying it was bad). ill wait till its out before starting to use terms like halo killer. ive been burned before.....
I can pick up a PS3 80 GB with a dual shock controller and Reistance 2, Little Big Planet and Motorstorm: Pacific Rift or some such thing for 399.00 euros locally. Considering that those three games would probably cost at least 160.00 euros on their own that's not a bad deal at all and I've been tempted to jump on it....Unfortunately for both Sony and I since they are directly responsible for creating SecuROM I shall continue enforcing a complete and strict boycott of all Sony products. Hope it was worth it to ya boys.
its about time they did something. their advertising manager should have been sacked 6 months after the machine came out. the original ads were terrible and after them, nothing. the odd occasional MGS4 and LBP ad. the thing is every multiplatform game seems to be advertised by MS. POP, Midnight Club and even GTA's adverts have nearly made it look like all these games were xbox exclusives. MS advertise both the games and the machine and what it can do i.e movie downloads. where are the PS3 ads showing off Home, Blu-ray and free network gaming? they really have made a shambles of it. hopefully some of this ad money will be put towards actually showing what the machine can do and not just cut-scenes from the game.

They give you those games for free because they can't shift them on their own. It'll be the same for killzone2 in a couple of months(all PS3 owners want is FIFA,NFS and COD games).
Ł269 for a ps3 at amazon and a HDMI cable. it says 90% of customers viewing that page bought it.
must be starting to shift in anticipation for this game. Ł269 aint bad at all.
That's not too bad. Especially as the Elite only has a smaller discount and comes out at only Ł60 cheaper. Can't see where it says 90% of viewers to the page have bought one though.
They've also got Mirrors Edge on 360/PS3 for Ł17 something.
I did have to laugh at one of the review though. Listing the pros and cons of the PS3, under cons the reviewer says "gathers dust".
Just saw you can also get Pacific Rift, LBP or R2 free with it too. s**t.

Heh. Fair point except about the highlighted bit. I already have CoD4 for the PC which is its *true* home. As for the other titles you mentioned I could really care less. I find "Resistance 2" appeals more to me than FIFA or NFS. Different strokes and all that jazz.
I have never seen a ps3 ad, neither for the console or games. Any wonder the 360 is kicking sony's ass. I probably will buy killzone 2 (never played first one) but then im a gamer and i dont need ads to tell me whats out

sales figures would suggest that is all xbox owners want to play aswell, more so infact
I think we all get lost in the details sometimes, the 360 is outselling the ps3 because it offers pretty much the same *gaming* experience as the ps3 for far less money, it really is as simple as that.
Sony must have re-discovered the marketing department in what they thought was just a broom closet...
LOL.
Iheard they went to investigate after they heard a man screaming. After they kicked in the door they found that thier marketing guy who they thought had been fired had in fact been locked in there with the doll from those f**king creepy PS3 ads from a while back.
If this was also used for games like MGS (was to an extent I suppose) and LBP (not nearly enough advertising) I would have said "wahey, common sense prevails". Took them long enough to realise advertising the major games counts. Let's hope it continues to other games too, games like MAG, Uncharted 2 etc.
Also Multi-Plat advertising. Considering the DLC for Mirror's Edge I expected that to be advertised a fair amount.

Yep, sad but true, those games sell well on any platform. But my point was that they do well on the PS3 at the expense of exclusive games like LBP, Resistance2 and motorstorm2. Just compare the PS3 chart to the allformats chart, LBP 2nd place/25th and resistance 6th/not even in top forty. Shows just how well PS3 games are selling doesn't it?

Ted saying you're clearly an expert on sales numbers maybe you could tell us just how many copies LBP, R2 and Motorstorm 2 has has sold to date?
Wow, Sony finally putting an effort into marketing? Halleluya. Thats been my one major grudge over the years against them, thank god they've finally come to their senses.
I have been saying that sony's marketing was it's downfall for a while. I still think it's partly true, but lets be real, the controller, the online service, the price, and sonys attitude towards its loyal fans are whats killing it. Marketing only goes so far. They could show angelina jolie naked holding a ps3 and i still would not want one. They need another 5 killzone 2's to be taken seriously.
