Nintendo's Wii was the only console to see full negative growth last week at the Japanese retailers.
Sales of the DSi, DS Lite, PSP, Xbox 360 and PS2 all saw gains of some kind, yet Nintendo's home console watched its weekly turnover fall by another 3,000 units.
The Wii's unit turnover had been falling throughout January, yet all its competitors had felt a similar loss. The system's sales have plummeted by 96,000 units since the week ending Jan 4, and has shown the least buoyancy during the general hardware slump in Japan.
For the Week ending Feb 1, Wii sales fell to 23,278 units. DSi sales climbed some 4,000 units to reach 55,613, while the PSP's gains were even higher; climbing around 6,000 units to reach weekly sales of 44,135.
The PS3 technically saw its sales fall - unit turnover was down by some 300 units - but the system continues to gain ground over the Wii. Two weeks ago the sales gap between the two systems was at 12,000 units, last week the gap was as wide as 9,000 units; today the distance is 6,000 units.
Full list for the week ending Feb 1 according to Media Create:
The ps3 can only sell 9,000+ more machines in its own backyard than the 360. I do worry for sony Especially as the DS and PSP(of all things)are owning it.
I don't know why CVG keep going on about this, like the Wii is done and PS3 will rise to lead console position, less people are buying Wii's because theres bugger-all out on it at the moment, when Monster Hunter 3 (a what was suppose to be PS3 exclusive, now turned Wii exclusive) comes out, there'll be no point of return for the PS3, not for another 4 or 5 years yet at least. The Wii has already won in Japan, PS3 2nd, Xbox 360 3rd.
Looking at those figures I have to say once again... The Wii is still selling more units than any other console each week, it's just starting to sell less more, but still more.
It's still pulling away from them though rather than being caught up by them. Still maybe it is time for Ninty to think about a price drop...

I don't understand Cvg's reasoning here. The PS3 is still selling less than the Wii, so the Wii is still pulling away in terms of sales, not gaining. It's not difficult to understand.
I agree with the guys above. The sub-headline is misleading, Eurogamer do the same thing. It should just read 'Wii moves ahead at a slower rate.' Or something to that effect.
I don't buy into all this CVG is biased stuff but the way the story was written made it seem like they were desperately trying to paint the Wii as being in the s**t or something. Or maybe i'm reading too much into it.
You can't go back to somewhere you've never been, the ps3 never really sold all that high, and (like a great many people i'm sure) the only reason i don't have one is that insane price.
the only reason the sales in japan are dropping is because everyone there has 5...(...i may have made that up, but i wouldn't put it past them XD)
I'm not a xbox man, but Kudos to the 360, it's not doing too bad at all in Japan, well, atleast compared to what it used to be.
It'd be nice to see the PS3 start 'beating' the wii for a while, even if only in japan though.
It is also due one of it's JRPG sales spikes soon (well MSoft/SE hope so anyway) with Star Ocean due in about 10 days. Although I can never see the 360's sales equalling it's Japanese counterparts.
Way to put a spin on that CVG! Bring back the good old days when CVG wasn't such a f*cking laughing stock!
Can anyboy outhere suggest a games site that is actually any good? This one is really starting to suck balls!
Try play.tm doesn't seem bad in that it looks to me at least to be very impartial and leaves all the baiting headlines to it's external links (otherwise known on play.tm as the wire).
ALthough CVG is far from the worst at having baiting headlines in my opinion. Each to their own at the end of the day.
You know its funny to see the same people falling for the same traps. You'd think they'd start getting suspicious of that big piece of pie in that unusually flat patch of grass. *thump* looks like they got another one!
Ever since Tales of Vesperia was released for the Xbox 360 in Japan, the Xbox 360 outsold the PS3 in Japan throughout 2008. Xbox 360 even outsold the Wii during a couple of periods of 2008, mainly because of all the great games, such as Infinite Undiscovery.
The sales for all the systems in Japan are incredibly low right now. Japan almost isn't important at this point in time. Game companies don't even consider "Japan," a factor any more on its own, the way they used to. Now they refer to Japan as part of Asia.
