Dirt 2 "pushing the boundaries" of PS3, 360

Codies confident new Ego engine will "lift the quality bar again"
Codemasters has told CVG that Colin McRae: Dirt 2 is "pushing the boundaries of what is possible" on PS3 and 360, running on a much-improved version of the Ego engine that powered the first game and Grid.

"DiRT 2 is actually running on the third iteration of Codemasters' EGO Engine proprietary technology, whereas DiRT was the first generation. As a result, there are many improvements that have been made to DiRT 2 over DiRT," said the game's senior executive producer, Gavin Raeburn.

"The development team have learnt a lot from the development of GRID, and have strengthened massively in their ability to get the most out of the hardware, notably pushing SPU usage on PS3, improving multi-core performance on Xbox 360 and adding PC specific features and technology."

He went on to add: "Overall these changes mean we are pushing the boundaries of what is possible with the hardware as much as possible, and we're confident in our ability to lift the quality bar again."

Check out the full interview - along with five new "target visual" screenshots - for more on what to expect from the rallying sequel.

they need to lift the physics, in first dirt cars felt not right somehow .
Aphexman on 21 Feb '09
Yes indeed, probably he most important aspect of any driving game is the feeling of inertia followed by the handling.
You want the car to feel like it has weight.

Changing subject though if there going to push both consoles then hopefully this will show of the PS3's overall graphical advantage over the 360. Assuming Code masters have got the hang of coding for the cell.

Now yes I am 'Sony Zealot', but when I had a PS2 I would readily admit the the original XBOX was graphically superior to the PS2. Halo was an obvious demonstration of that. This generation of course it's switched around, with the 360 selling more units while been less powerful console.
Funny old world eh?

Have you not seen the interview with the guy who worked on the Cell for Ps3 He said that both the 360 and the PS3 have roughly the same power with each console having a slightly different strengh and heres a link just in case you start saying your bulls**t again http://uk.ps3.ign.com/articles/945/945818p1.html

Well done harvoid, you just cured my insomia with that load of lame, boring, childish point-scoring heap of dribble.
Why can't we all just enjoy the benefits of both consoles instead of behaving like a load of pube-less little s**ts...

i don't know if anyone's noticed but it does seem to be that ps3 fanboys always start trouble on these forums? but then get annoyed when xbox fanboys do it to them? i reckon they should just be quiet!

the ps3 may have better graphics but its not that much better and many games on ps3 only go up to 720p (according to the back of the boxes, that is where i'm getting the info here check almost every game for the first year and a half of its life to see). the ps3 cell and xbox chip work differently (similar to Amd and pentinum so the power ratings are different.) the only thing ps3 really has over the 360 is the blue-ray which allows them to put more info on a disc. however, with that space it does encourage lazy coding (i'm a programmer and its amazing how condensed you can make code).

anyway enough fanboy bashing
randomhero2 on 21 Feb '09
well said.i own both consoles and each are great for different reasons.multi format games seem to be better on 360 but ps3 exclusives like drakes quest and motorstorm are probrably not possinle on 360 anyway but both consoles rock so grow up people and have the best of both worlds, why fuel these pathetic arguments that sony and microsoft love.
ben1974 on 21 Feb '09
Calm down people, I thought my post was quite balanced. I did of course admit that the 360 is outselling the PS3, and did nobody read my sentence about the original xbox?

Is just I don't think games kZ2 would be possible on the 360.

I remeber saying on a post a couple of months ago that the dead space would not possible on the Wii.

Oh dear.. looks like EA are going to try and prove me wrong.
harvoid on 21 Feb '09
Where do people keep getting the idea that the PS3 has better graphics than the 360? Is it because it costs more, has a Blu-ray drive or uses the cell processor(the 360 also has a multi-core processor too), none of which makes the least difference to the graphics? Surely it's the graphics chip(GPU) and the available system RAM that matters most, and the 360 beats the PS3 in that respect. Confused

One post says the PS3's CPU is faster, one guy says they're more or less equal and you say the 360's is faster. All in the same thread! I get the feeling no one knows.

Listen to it from the professional's rather then the fanboys who battle it out constantly here at CVG.
It is quite shocking to see so many reply's from so many news articles that "360 is better!!!" "nooo the PS3 is!!!" ..grow up tards, they are both pretty much equal.
KMakawa on 21 Feb '09
I find it funny how when the PS3 and 360 came out all the mega fan boys went on and on about how the PC was doomed and that the consoles were more powerful etc

Yet now, as was inevitable, the parity between consoles and PCs is fading, with more and more stuff having PC specific settings due to increased power
Cartho on 21 Feb '09
"Pushing the 360 and PS3 to their limits...."

What a load of rubbish.
I guarentee that better looking games will appear before the next gen appears.
Developers talk rubbish like that to try and sell more units and if your an idiot you'll believe it.

As for which console is the more powerfull...Who really knows?
I've got both and they are very close at the moment, I only have both because I don't want to miss exclusives.
petrolhead on 21 Feb '09
and yet they're still far below PC
mehteh on 21 Feb '09
and yet they're still far below PC

tbh though you need a console to supplement a pc in some cases. MGS, GOW2, GTA Iv, waiting months for burnout paradise. While pc clearly has the tech lead and they look superb, it doesn't have the publisher priority lead. So you want titles first, you're not going to find them on pc.

If you have pc + console. all the better.

No. Even when you are trying to back track on your comment you are still having a go at the 360. So when exactly are the the developers going to get their heads around the ps3 complicated s**t. Just like the ps2 apparently never lived up to it's potential, neither will the george forman. Stop quoting specs and look up at the screen. Street Fighter 4 is a great example. Your version is by far the inferior one. Like the sony heads will be having crisis meetings at the moment, you sony fanboys should be discussing what your going to do after the e3 announcement. You can kiss goodbye to one of your big exclusives this year, if not more.

lame yacking yet again.....
oscar on 22 Feb '09
Dudes - who gives a toss if one console is slightly better or not. Spend your cash your way and enjoy the ride. The only thing that will separate the PS3 and 360 IMO is: 360 cheap as chips, a decent library of game, unknown exclusives for 2009 and for peeps who don't need bluray or HD movies, excellent online but you gotta pay for it. Whereas PS3 is a tad more expensive, a decent library of games with a nice number of exclusives coming out and bluray / HD movie ready, network free.
cykosis on 22 Feb '09
Jesus Christ, it never fails to amaze me how pathetic the posters on CVG are, and I've snapped.

Why don't you put down your control pads, put your fanbpy-ism to one side and try to erm... I don't know... lose you virginity maybe?

Anyone that can get so worked up over what console/system is better cannot have had the feeling of a nice wet rose petals on their bell end.

I thought I would come back to see how this thread was going.
I state an opinion in I think a calm way, and then some people just get angry and start swearing. Please People just relax...

Back on topic, if Codemasters can make this anything like as eye-poppingly gorgeous as GT5P, I'll be amazed.
DS1086 on 22 Feb '09
I reckon they should manage it easily, Grid looks better than GT5P
Mark Hayhurst on 22 Feb '09
I remember being slightly disappointed with the GRID demo, so I never bought the full game. I might have to check it out.
DS1086 on 22 Feb '09
I think it's great. But I'd rent it first, real split opinion among my mates. Half love it half hate it.
Mark Hayhurst on 22 Feb '09
Re-downloading the demo now.... I notice it is 'only' 720p. How can that compare to GT5's 60fps @ 1080p?
DS1086 on 22 Feb '09

Because polycount & texturing > resolution.

The 720 v 1080 argument is totally irrelevant. A car with 200k polys is going to look better at 720p than a car with 50k polys at 1080p. Likewise, clever use of textures and shaders and AA will make far more difference to the quality of the graphics than simply adding more lines.

I still don't like the way any of the new Codies racers handle - it just feels wrong. I like Forza and GT, but since I also like PGR and Burnout as well it's not just that I'm a pure sim fan.
Dajmin on 23 Feb '09
I dunno. My prjector is 1080p so I can play both at full res but Grid def ooks better imo.

Softer edges, more interesting backgrounds, more going on on screen, sharper replays.

720p to 1080p makes no difference to the graphics - just the resolution. Graphics that aren't as good aren't any better for being in 1080p they're just displaying at a higher res.

The scenery in GRID possibly has more detail, but the cars in GT5P apparently have more than 200,000 polygons. There's no way GRID has more than that.

Main reason why I left CVG,
Too many retards, and not enough moderators.
The fact that they have trashed a very nice article is shocking.
