After much speculation, Media Create has confirmed that Capcom's Street Fighter IV had sold over 86,000 units in Japan last week.
Sales of the title also gave a lift to its two host consoles, the PS3 and Xbox 360, with both enjoying a combined weekly sales increase of over 4,000 units.
Individually, Microsoft's box saw sales rise by over fifteen hundred units to reach a weekly figure of 9,833. Sony's PS3, on the other hand, enjoyed further gains despite a significantly larger install base, climbing over 2,500 units to a total weekly sales sum of 18,656.
The PS3's gains, if they occurred last week, would have put Sony's console about 2,000 units behind Nintendo's Wii system. Yet for the week ended Feb 15 all next-gen systems, save for one, enjoyed an encouraging rise in sales.
The Wii put a stop to its perilous successive weekly sales declines by turning weekly unit growth this week; the system saw sales climb over five hundred units to reach a figure of 21,016.
Nintendo's DSi, however, enjoyed far superior gains, jumping by around 4,000 units to hit 53,483. This is partly due to the new release of Mario & Luigi RPG3, which sold a striking 192,945 units in its first week. The DS Lite too saw sales up, climbing from 12,484 to 14,810.
Sony's PS2 still acts as a relevant unit in Japan, selling at the 5,000-mark, though this week climbing around 200 units. Yet no matter how pleased Sony would be with the sales performances of its home consoles, the company could be slightly concerned with the PSP's weekly sales drop.
Sony's handheld didn't fall too far; only down from 34,969 to 34,256, but in the context of a week where all consoles showed signs of recovery from the market slump, Sony will no doubt hope this is a blip and not a trend.
Full list for the week ending Feb 8 according to Media Create:
Oooh, the PS3 is getting pretty close to the Wii now in Japan. Maybe the Japanese are getting fed up of the same old casual stuff on the Wii? I think it is probably only a matter of time before Euro and US follow suit - though it will more than likely be 360 that benefits more from Wii boredom in those territories.
sales of the PS3 have been hovering around that number for ages. There must be Wii fatigue at the moment, at least until the big N release some other monster franchise loosley related to games. I'd be pretty happy with those figures if i were Microsoft. To only be outsold 2:1 by Sony in their own backyard isn't bad at all, well based on the generally low number of units sold anyway. 9,000 less than Sony in Japan is small fry compared to the bigger numbers they're doing in the states.
I wouldn't mind a DSi but not at Ł150. Come on nintendo, you're blatantly taking the pi$$ with that price.
i see ps3's finally selling as some simply prefer the sony pads rather then the 360's, obv 360 will sell aswell but from what i hear the ps3 pads are more techiniclly sound when it comes to the king of fighting games

Mind you, the 360 is doing good numbers in Japan.
Hypothetical situation, the Wii numbers stay at around 20k, and the PS3 numbers hit 30k and stay that way.
It would take until 2019 for the PS3 to make up the difference. Even if you take the PS3 up to 40k (which is extremely optimistic) it would still take till 2014.
Like it or not, it isn't going to happen anytime soon.

xbox fanboy much??
anyway, deos anyone know the overall units shipped of the 360 and ps3, fed up of these weekly summonds and ive looked everywhere but can't find the numbers, anyone know?
Official figures are hard to come by, and I don't tend to trust them that much anyway because of the power of marketing, but VG Chartz is normally fairly close to the actual figures.

I didn't actually say they (PS3/360) would catch up. It just looks like Wii sales are slowing down. People must be fed up of waving their arms around by now.

Cheers mate, and I also agree that the Wii is gettin reali annoyin and losing alot of appeal
I got SF4 today and it is still in it's wrapping until I can find a mad catz controller for sale somewhere! I am not even going to attempt playing it with the horrible 360 d-pad...
I would rather it was out on wii so I could use the classic controller.

xbox fanboy? just because i said MS would be happy with those figures? you're barking up the wrong tree there.
Can I just say that SF4 is absolutely superb online, without nary a hint of lag. I was really surprised by how smooth it was. What didn't surprise me was the general kicking of my cheeks.
I did get my own back on Battlemoose though..
I may have to invest in a stick because I was struggling to press all 3 buttons at once for the super and ultra moves.
Anybody know the best places to get them from as I couldn't see any on PLAY.com? Cheers.
sf4 or tekken or mortal combat on the wii? f**k off thas jus stupidity
I think he was referring the respective control-pads. Obviously, the 360s' D-Pad is a monstrosity for these types of games, but the PS pad is still not perfect either. So, that just leaves the Classic Wii controller, which I can honestly say I've never used.
Hell, we all know the Saturns' pad is the one for these.

The single thing that the DS controller is better for. Well, that and a paper weight.
Have I mentioned I hate that pad?
It's amazing what the power of one game can do for the systems they appear on.

I'm tired of reading comments about people suggesting all the Wii has is casual games. It's such a cheap shot, and I suspect often (maybe not by Mark) made by people who do not own the console. Nintendo would do well to shed this common misconception.

Last time I checked, Amazon had the Chun-Li joypad available two days ago. It was the 360 one though.
I think Marty posted a link to another website in the review thread, if you're up to the task of sifting through SVD's ramblings.

Will you be enrolling in the forthcoming tournament?

Mark, how about, in the mean time anyway, changing the buttons to (this is for 360, but you get the idea!) kicks on a, x and LB and punches on b, y and rb. Or vice versa. At least this way you can hit the a and x buttons with your thumb and the shoulder button with your finger?
That's how I'm going to play it. When I get around to going to Asda, Ł27.49 there apparently.
Oh and for everyone, check the gaming discount forum at avforums - http://www.avforums.com/forums/gaming-bargains-discount-codes/ . Pretty good for discount codes and deals! They had Ł199 40GB PS3s earlier but they sold out.

Yeah, I'll try that, cheers. I have noticed some megadrive style official pads doing the rounds and they maybe a good alternative as you can pick them up for less than Ł20. I'll see how I get on first with reconfiguring the controls.
Not completed the single player yet, with any characters! I get so far and get my bottom kicked - usually off Balrog or M Bison. Much harder than I remember SF2 being.
I enjoy getting challenged in Arcade mode, but it tends to happen far too often. Do you know if there is any way to have them less frequent?

You would of thought so but hey they must be enjoying it. Good news for us gamers and Sony and MSoft (I say especially for MSoft as you have to hand it to them for their persistance over there) in increased sales.

pfffft, once MH3 comes out every single person in Japan will probably run out and buy 2 wiis. I'm not sure if the US and UK sales will soon follow since the market that makes up most of wii sales probably isn't looking for anything like the next big shooter or fps. And besides, there are some core games on the way. Nice week in sales for Sony though.
Also, wouldn't the PS3 have to consistently outsell the Wii in order to catch up? Has it done this once yet? It may catch up in weekly sales though. But I can't see anything catching the wii in total sales currently.

Well, maybe its the oppostite in the west where no one really wants a PS3....
Man, you guys, where do you get your assumptions from?? And you laugh at analysts? At least they get it right!
Well SF5 will help PS3 sales in Japan, this is no suprise.
I think because of the horrendous 360 D-pad, a lot of the Japanese punters are going for the PS3 version. I certainly will be picking this up for PS3 soon.
The D-pad for PS3 is great for these games. If I can dominate people on VF5 using a PS3 pad, then I know it will be ideal for SF5.
