Sony has announced that the PS3 has amassed global sales above 21 million.
As part of the Sony's announcement regarding its bid to launch hardware across Latin America, the firm claimed that life-to-date sales of the PS3 were now at 21.3 million.
The company also stated that the PlayStation Network has amassed 17 million registered accounts, though this was given as a whole number and not specifying if it included duplicate accounts and/or excluded PSP accounts and accounts activated on the PSN website.
Last week, Sony announced that total worldwide sell-in units of the PSP had surpassed the 50 million mark.
Good numbers for the PS3, hopefully this generation will be on a bit of a more level playing field where one platform holds a commanding lead over thier competitors (like the PS2 did) and we can all enjoy playing some great games, which at the end of the day is what its all about .
I've just been offered a PS3, plus 2 games of my choice with my mobile phone contract. So I take it they are including the subsidised freebies in with that "sold" figure!!

i knew someone was gonna mention M.A.G, i still stand by the fact M.A.G was brought up just to show somthing against 360 that day when xbox bought rights to FF, i see M.A.G being the next HOME as in it wont be ready for another 2 or 3 years, theres been nothing heard of it since, tho if anyone has any proof of this id love to know.

The swing still lies heavily with Microsoft in my opinion, its no longer just about games, for most the multiplayer service is vital and for the forseeable XBox has this sewn up. The PS3 still wilts under the potential it undeniably has, problem is the market it now trades in is quite different. Admittedly there are now some awesome games emerging but with money tight and a clear deficit in online service are the public ready to put their money where their mouth is? I'm not sure they are... afterall a masterpiece such as LBP was almost lost in the ether when it should have sold like the bucketload.
Anyone with an XBox (unless they are insanely hungry for a particular title) is not going to jump ship knowing COD6, SF4, Resi etc are going to be supported on Live this year. Understand Sony there are many kings in this court but multiplayer is the biggest, get Home upgraded and subscribed to and quick.
in the current economic climate there is absolutely no way the PS3 can hold its ground against the cheaper hardware and games of the 360. Expect the 360 to gain huge ground this year unless Sony do something serious regarding the PS3's price and games price

MS Live offers absolutely nothing to justify the cost of its membership compared to other superb services such as PSN. I'm using my PSN at the moment to post this message lol (PC gettin fixed), something which is impossible on Xbox Live, and I'm doing it free! My mate just checked his Live account using PSN browser after I showed him video on YouTube, on my 42 inch LCD TV lol. When Sony do drop the price of PS3 what then for MS, free Live? Does that mean they've been taking money all this time until forced to cut its loses by Sony? Not very reassuring.

To suggest Xbox Live is a better service than PSN is BS. I own both and GTA 4 on Xbox including online play cost my mate £70, I paid £40 for the PS3 version including online play and the same experience with arguably better graphics lol

Hey Oscar, not so much better this better that, just strengths and weaknesses between 2 formats and what they offer, no rivalry mean no competitive services or offers for us jonny consumers in the middle. Example being PSN wouldnt run as excellent as it does if there was no Live and Live would probably have a considerably higher subscription fee if there was no 'free' PSN (MS lower subscription fee review due and probable Live subscription to be scraped altogether, thank Sony and rivalry and also better than this, better than that debates).

Anyone else noticed this? I've looked all over the NXE and I can't find a way to switch back to silver.

Sadly a lot of the PS3 exclusives for 2009 were announced in 2007 or before... and let's not forget that most of the 360 exclusive big games for 2009 won't be revealed until they are almost ready for release... Gears2, Fable2 and others released at the end of 2009 weren't revelaed until E3 of 2009.

I think if you check you'll find you mean the GDC and not E3. Why would Sony announce God of War 3 and Uncharted 2 back in 2007 before God of War 2 and Uncharted were out?

Well I'm sure the 5 million people here in America who have lost their jobs will be buying a PS3. Things are about to get much worse here and probably everywhere. I'll bet all three console makers have a lousy year.

I'd like to think that Sony will push the price down a little, as they could be in danger of blowing the opportunity they have with their 2009 line up. Regardless of games I just won't pay £300 for another console and I know a lot of people who are the same. I think the 360 was rightly doing better when it had better games, and the PS3 should do better with it's 2009 line up. I don't really care about sales figures in relation to each other, as long as none of them go the way of the Dreamcast, then I'll be happy!
I've only had limited experience with PSN. But I don't think you can compare it to XBL. And rightly so, you pay for XBL so it should be better. Which is why I get p**sed off with P2P online, when surely we are paying for server upkeep etc? However, I got the GTA4 DLC, which at 1.78GB took me about 20 minutes to download and from what I've seen and heard, you just won't getanywhere near that on PSN.
I don't mind £2/pcm for that. I'd pay £2 extra a month to Virgin to make my broadband a faster, more reliable service. It would get annoying if you want to play online a couple of times a month or so though.

You should be able to cancel the payments through your banks internet site.
Yep. Good idea. If you cut off the funding at the source (i.e. your bank account,) by asking your bank to cancel all present and future automatic payments then MS won't get a dime and they will cut off your Gold Live account access. With credit cards you can usually also have the bank reclaim the latest payments within a month's time after they were made if you request it.

That will affect his credit rating if Microsoft look for a payment and are blocked. He needs to get in touch with Microsoft first and cancel the order, there's no other way around that. Sounds like a right con.
Microsoft are presently selling more 360's than PS3's. It's that simple. In the UK it's outselling the PS3 2 to 1 at the moment.
Sony could turn it around by reducing the PS3 to £249 or £229. We would then see the PS3 slaughtering the 360. It's actually amazing that the PS3 has sold so well at it's present high price, so, a price drop should do wonders for numbers sold.
At present there's not a lot between the consoles anyway, I've got both now so I don't miss exclusives and am happy with both consoles.
I don't think cancelling this will effect your credit rating. A subscription renewel that is debited from a card isn't the same as a mobile phone contract, things where you are invoiced for past services etc. But you would want to be careful if you stopped paying but they kept renewing your Gold membership. Then they could potentially come after you for the money owed.
Either way it's still a big con if you have to go to these lengths.
I don't know the rules and regs for all that. But the above was the case for my old boss a few years ago when I was sorting out all his personal debts!

whilst i like the fact psn is free, the chat part of it sucks big hairy balls, quality is horrendous!!! everytime ive gone to play LBP with my friend online weve never managed to finish it because its the worst case of lag ive ever come across since playing games online... everyone i know who owns a ps3 and 360 has said exactly the same as me about the gamechat quality, and im not making up some deluded rubbish when i say it either, i cant wait til tuesday when i recieve my copy of KZ2, but you know what, me and my mates and people i play online with are all starting a private party chat on the 360 first and then going onto the ps3 to play KZ2 .... ive said this before, but comparing xbox live and psn is like comparing bluray and dvd, if you want the best and all the bells and whistles then youre gonna have to pay that little bit extra which i dont mind doing, nor does the millions that have gold accounts on xbox live... rant over
EDIT: if psn were to announce an online service that matched or bettered the 360's then id happily pay £30.99 a year for the privalige of having it.

i have both so either way it matters not to me, i keep saying this but 'ive said before' hardware sales are not what matter to either ms or sony, its the attach rate of games where the money is made, havent looked for a long time of what it is for the present.... sales of hardware means sweet F.A cos they both make a loss (or i may stand corrected about the 360 making a profit in hardware cos i remember someone saying summat before about the 360 making money on consoles now???), correct me if im wrong anyway, but the ps3 is deffo not making any money on hardware sales. now is the time for KZ2 to be released bigtime.

Considering just about everybody on the planet had a ps2,and now the ps3 is languishing in 3rd place can only be good for gaming,and shows sony they now have some stiff competition.Sony needed knocking down a peg or 2 for their arrogance and complacency.

That would only happen if he was still receiving a service or hasn't finished paying for something. This is just a monthly subscription that doesn't tie you down to an 18 month contract.
I've done this before and it was fine, the company just phoned me up asking why I no longer wanted to continue with the payments.

Heyup, matey. Don't like to get involved in these disputes these days, but I just thought I would point something out. The attach ratio for GTA4 is actually better for the PS3 when you consider that the 360 has sold over 6 million more consoles than PS3. I think the PS3 version of GTA4 has sold less than a million short of the 360 version. Therefor, a higher percentage of PS3 owners picked the game up. Things may change with the release of the new DLC, but there you go. Still, you are correct about MS making more money - if you don't include the billions they spent on repairs!

The attach ratio for GTA4 is actually better for the PS3 when you consider that the 360 has sold over 6 million more consoles than PS3. Definitely! Man, I'll be seriously jealous if I see you playing it tomorrow! Mind you, it will give you extra time to complete the single player game. Hopefully I will recieve my copy on Thursday, from PLAY.com. Looking forward to multiplayer because Resistance 2 online was a bit of a let down in all honesty.

yeh he could potentially lose a sale if their is a price drop and gamestation undercut game. but well have to see if their is a price drop. It would be interesting to see how ps3 sales compare to xbox360 and wii if that happens. Not that it will ever catch the wii. But as you say the PS3 will be hit - but just think of all those XBox Live Gold accounts that will go silver this year as people cut back? Come on M$ lets have a free service? Nintendo and Sony are comming and there free,,,and in this climate thats a BIG BIG word?
I've recently found out I'm on an infinite £5 a month for live gold. I used to just buy a 3-month subscription when I wanted it(not online all the time), and I don't remember ordering an infinite account(if I did I would've clicked on the yearly option).

You should be able to cancel the payments through your banks internet site.
That will affect his credit rating if Microsoft look for a payment and are blocked. He needs to get in touch with Microsoft first and cancel the order, there's no other way around that. Sounds like a right con.
That would only happen if he was still receiving a service or hasn't finished paying for something. This is just a monthly subscription that doesn't tie you down to an 18 month contract.
I've done this before and it was fine, the company just phoned me up asking why I no longer wanted to continue with the payments.
