Mass Effect 2: First trailer, screens

BioWare finally lifts the veil on sci-fi sequel
BioWare's released the first teaser trailer for its hotly-anticipated sci-fi sequel, Mass Effect 2.

As you'd expect from a teaser there isn't any gameplay footage in the video - or hardly any details at all in fact. As fans of the first it is enough to get us pumped like a balloon.

What's also failed to emerge are which platforms the second game will be headed for. The original, if you remember, was an Xbox 360 exclusive in the pre-EA days and later made its way to PC with even fancier visuals. Mass Effect 2 is said to be multiplatform, unsurprisingly, but we're still waiting for EA's iron-cast official word.

Proper details on Mass Effect 2 are set to be unveiled at GDC in San Francisco next month. We can't wait.

It's at times like these I truly hate EA. I wish they would go belly-up, die and disappear from the gaming scene and let others fill the vacuum.

Cannot wait for this game... Laughing

Not sure what p**sed you off in this article, care to elaborate? Anyway, I hope this sees a release this year.

I think it'd be good for it to go multi-platform, A) because more people would play it and B) because it would expose PS3 Fanboys as hypocrites.

<sarcasm>But then again if it goes multiplatform they'll have to dumb it down for the PS3.</sarcasm>

Anyway, the first one was excellent so I expect this one to be as well.

I think Microsoft have an exclusive on the first 2 of this series. Read that somewhere ages ago

voodoo341 on 22 Feb '09
Yep, I'm an anti-fanboy-fanboy.

Why though, I am just pointing out the hypocrisy?

It's the same when Wii fanboys claim they don't care about graphics and then complain when a game hasn't got top notch(for the Wii anyway) graphics. Hypocrisy.

It would make little to no sense releasing Mass Effect 2 on the PS3 without the first one.

It would make little to no sense releasing Mass Effect 2 on the PS3 without the first one.

There's an interview in Play magazine with the CEO of Bioware, Ray Muzyka. He wouldn't confirm or deny if Mass Effect 2 would be coming to the PS3 but did say that all other games from Bioware would be released on the PS3 as well. Including the rather impressive looking Dragon Age (which looks absolutely bloody brilliant). In the same section as the interview, in a box called Mass Hysteria the writer says Mass Effect 2 will be released for the PS3 a few months after the 360 version is released. The PS3 version will include the original Mass Effect and all it's DLC in the box. The special addition will also come out for the 360. I think it's safe to assume Muzyka unofficially confirmed this during the interview.
voodoo341 on 22 Feb '09
For me this is the greatest gaming news I've had in ages.

In fact, this is the first game in ages that has got me excited in the same way I was excited in my younger days of gaming Very Happy

The first Mass Effect was epic and I'm happy for it to come to PS3 as long as the choices from ME1 remain unaffected.

Although, I must say I'm worried by the 'Shepard KIA' at the end of the teaser. If that is the case, then it is a major cop-out on Bioware's/EA's part.
finty13 on 22 Feb '09
I am old school (Doom One days) and FPS games for me must be done on the PC with a mouse and keyboard. I will not be buying Mass Effect 2 because it comes from EA games and it will have their draconian version of SecuRom on it with activation limits imposed. It will probably require an internet connection to activate too which is draconian at best. If I want to rent a game I will go down to my local video store. EA needs to look at Bethesda Software company model and how they actually treat their customers right when it comes to DRM. Fallout 3 on my PC is one of the best if not the best RPG/FPS game I have ever played. Bouycott EA untill they pull their heads out of you know where.

There is also talk of keeping your old saves from the 1st for this title, so how that will affect cross platform for the sequel who knows.

Looking forward to this, enjoyed the first (though more variety would be nice).

Regulus - Mass Effect isn't an FPS.

Looking forward to this the last one was awesome from start to finish. Hope they do bring it to PS3, they could prob fit part 1 & 2 onto a Blu Ray disc.

Someone mentioned that it was stupid releasing Mass Effect 2 on PS3 becuase the original wasn't realeased on that console, what a load of pap, there are plenty of sequels knocking about that aren't from the current console, it's like saying Resident Evil 5 should be a PS1 game.

One serious question to CVG:

When is the PS3 version coming out

This will look great next to Heavy Rain, InFamous, Yakuza 3, God of War III and all the other hit PS3 titles for 2009 that will send those lucky enough into dreamland

Thanks EA, it was a supris but you can't ignore 22 million sales

Maybe M$ will concede us Halo Wars next

Then again, f*cking please no

Send it back - we don't want it

Sure. I wish the day-to-day BioWare staff much success on "Mass Effect 2" and I hope it outshines "Mass Effect". My previous comment has to do with the loathsome DRM and limited activations EA seems committed to keep using both on "Mass Effect 2" and on other titles just like it did with "Mass Effect" (which is why I refused to buy it). The PC gaming scene would have to die before EA would admit they got it wrong. It's so typical; a bunch of clueless assholes get to sit in power and screw it up for so many others. I usually don't advocate violence to solve such issues but in this case it holds a certain appeal.

You and I are share the exact same train of thought on this particular matter. Even if it burns me from the inside out not to buy and play some of these fantastic looking games I will keep at it since I refuse to be held ransom by EA's (and others,) fascist DRM tactics. I will see either myself or them dead first before they get a single penny of my money as things currently stand!...And I'll raise my future children to oppose and detest DRM schemes as well when that time comes too!

You know what is truly pathetic, ludicrous and childish? You altering my comments so they can fit your purposes when you then "quote" me. This is at least the second time I've caught you at it. Do it again and I promise you I will see what I can do to get you banned. Disagree with my opinions and views. Fine. Attack my comments. That's okay too. Do not presume to alter my words in what is presented as a "direct quote" when it is a lie! Now that we have cleared that up I'm sure we can find lots of ways to engage in verbal sparring without the need to involve the powers that be on this forum. Enjoy your evening. Cool

Of course ME2 is going to the PS3, but this is good news for Gamers as more will get the opportunity to play a great game in what could be a fantastic franchise.

Our old chum Suivaloon cant seem to grasp this fact but as I have said I dont think Raving Fanboys are Gamers so it doesnt really matter what he says/thinks (though you do make me laugh, in a weird crazy way EmbarassedLaughing ).

Am I the only one that was underwhelmed by Mass Effect? I thought it was really linear.

I applaud the work that went into the characterisation and the universe but the game didn't exactly inspire exploration off the beaten path and was way too short. Maybe I'm just a cynic.

I'm looking forward to seeing more of the sequel as the series has a lot of promise, just no more driving around barren rocks looking for insignias please?

I absolutely adore Baldurs Gate and Knights Of the Old Republic so I'm hoping to be amazed by the sequel, the universe they've created is deep and interesting enough, I want the game to match up to the concept.

Just ranting from an old cynic.....

.......and speaking as an xbox stalwart, I'm glad it's coming to PS3, the more money they get, hopefully the more money pumped into the final part of the trilogy.

I seem to remember you saying once you only buy something like two to three games a year suiv, what are you going to do with the slew of games heading to the PS3 this year.

Or are you hoping they'll all be let downs like Resistance 2 and Motostorm so you only have to buy two of them?

That last paragraph was just to wind him up. It's not a 'dig' at anything or anyone else!
ricflair on 22 Feb '09
If they do bring it to the PS3 I hope they first sort out the dodgy combat, terrible texture pop-in (though Drakes was responsible for that once - after the parachute jump!) and utterly soul destroying lift sections.

I enjoyed the characters and story, but just got fed up with the flaws and never actually finished the game, though I did try twice!

3rd time lucky?
Mark240473 on 22 Feb '09
Those problems are inherent to the Unreal Engine 3(Lift sections are disguised loading screensWink). The Last Remnant suffered from the exact same problems, except the combat that's just a bit dodgy.

I'm looking foward to this as long as they add a bit to the combat and the biotic powers and make the side missions a bit deeper with more choices (more along the lines of Baldur's Gate 2 where a side quest can lead you down all sorts of interesting paths)

I couldn't care less about ME2 being multi-platform as a good game, well intergrated with it's chosen platforms, means a good game for everyone. Having said that I will be annoyed if PC gamers have to wait half a year later to get it!

I think a lot of people forget to take into account (or simply might not know) exactly how the Mass Effect trilogy is supposed to pan out.

For those who think Mass Effect is too linear, think about it:- the game is designed to be a trilogy. You can't have too many different variations from the main plot or you're going to have a hard time of things going into games 2 and 3. The main story, for the most part, has to be on the straight and narrow, so that when you go into the next game, things aren't so different as to require many completely different starting points and even main plot altogether.

Also, the makers have said that most of the real consequences from your actions will be reflected not within the game itself, but within the sequels once you load your completed saved game from the previous one. That is where you'll see most of the results from what you did in the first game.

It probably won't be until Mass Effect 3 that we'll see the plots and choices really start to branch off into different places. That's when they can afford to do so, because that's the end. Technically Mass Effect isn't so much the first game as the first third of one big game released over time.

I've always had the feeling that Mass Effect wasn't truly appreciated for what it was setting out to do. Sure, it has its faults, but it's more ambitious than people give it credit for. And I get the feeling that it won't be until the second game comes that people truly begin to realise just how.

In what form the saves will carry over I have not read anything about. The quote from the devs I read was "you might want to keep your saves from the original" so thats pretty open at the moment.

Well hopefully they will have a better grasp of the Unreal engine for the sequel and get rid of the technical issues.

Personally the combat was ok granted not the best but hey thats opinions for you. Agreed on the lift sections, although it's a shame you cant get past those issues to finish the game it is good although if what Voodoo says is right and the PS3 is getting the original and sequel as a bundle maybe you could get it on that.

I'm surprised MS didn't make some kind of deal with bioware to keep Mass Effect exclusive. Probably end up timed at least.

Can't wait for this game. don't care who publishes it so long as bioware are the devs behind it it'll be fantasatic.

Seriously though, I personally don't think that it will come out for the PS3 initially. Instead, I reckon that the PS3 version may come out in 2010 as a double pack, with all the bells and whistles. I may be tempted if there are a few improvements.

Seriously though, I personally don't think that it will come out for the PS3 initially. Instead, I reckon that the PS3 version may come out in 2010 as a double pack, with all the bells and whistles. I may be tempted if there are a few improvements.

you never know, the ps3 version of me1 might be the pc version which had a few changes here and there.

as much as i loved the first one if they improve the side missions to be more varied, improve the vehicle handling and speed up loading times it will be hard to beat.

Jesus, why must every article turn into yet another yawnworthy fanboy war. I don't care how much any of you try to justify it, bagging on either console for the sake of not being the one you have makes you a moron.

It's good news that ME has gone multiplatform because it means more people will get the chance to play it. The original was fantastic and the sequel is bound for greatness too. Releasing it on PS3 doesn't magically make the 360 version worse.

And for those who were asking - Bioware/EA have confirmed that you will be able to import characters and decisions you made in the original. However, you will also have the same creation options you got in ME1 for new players.

Hopefully it'll run well on both machines. Although the PS3 has had a few problems witht the unreal3 engine. Then again so has the 360.

I think that minor technical faults aside it was an amazing game and definately one of the best rpgs this gen. The sequel can hopefully only improve on this, even if it was just more of the same i'd be happy.

i actually bought a 360 for this and cant wait for 2.... I will be buying it on xbox because of my saved game and choices that i made im happy to stick with. I would however like to see how the ps3 version is gonna pan out without the stats and choices.

Motostorm a let down?

It was a joke. He was always going on about the exclusives to blow the 360 out of the water or whatever. From the reviews it underwhelmed compared to HIS hype. That is all I am saying.

I went back in and put in the last paragraph to save me writing this as I knew someone would take it as a dig instead of a joke. Looks like that was a waste of time!

I hate EA, all the same though I don't care if its multi-platform (I have them all anyway) aslong as it isn't broken and improves on the first but 360 has to atleast keep DLC exclusive and have decent amounts over a good time.
TheKraige on 23 Feb '09
we can only hope that they do a better job on this one because the first game was s**t

Yes it was, hence all the reviews saying how good it was. Shame, it could've been good if it wasn't for all the being good.

Seriously, do you have nothing better to do with your life than create new usernames here? I've never had thrush, but I do assume you're just about as much fun.

Well spotted. I didn't twig, but judging from his other comments it's pretty obvious. It's actually becoming really sad now.

Hopefully the PC version will come out on Steam and we won't have to worry about the DRM nonsense.

I hope Shepard isn't dead, I really want to carry on building on my character from my original save-games.

But at the moment what I'm really looking forward to is the patch for the first game on PC, so I can play it again without it crashing every half hour.

I am old school (Doom One days) and FPS games for me must be done on the PC with a mouse and keyboard.

but its not a FPS???

Confused

cannot wait for this beast, the first one has definitely been the most epic storyline to any game ive played... i want this game more than any other i can think of at the moment...

Can't wait for this game!!!!! Concept screenshots look awesome. 2010 is what I've heard, but hopefully a bit sooner! And hopefully Shepard isn't dead. It is a little weird that the trilogy is gonna be released post sequal on PS3. I guess it'll give the sonyfanboys a big headache, having to go n buy it after bad-mouthing it! lol. Don't even get me started on EA!!! Like I've said before, it won't bother me unless they pull a 2K and give the PS3 all the DLC, and the 360 nothing!!!

I hope it does come out on the ps3, I considered getting an xbox 360 for the original but didnt want to buy a console just on the basis of one game.

If the sequel does come out on the ps3 it will be another great Action RPG for us Sony users such as oblivion or fallout 3. I'm sick of turn based RPG's, they are boring and out of date so I am much in approval of games like mass effect, fallout 3, oblivion etc.

Want turn based go play chess.
