Nintendo has unveiled a new controller for the Wii. But before you get excited it's not the fabled Wii Remote with Motion Plus built in, it's the Classic Controller Pro, a normal Classic Controller with prongs sticking out the bottom.
Due for release this summer in Japan, the pad also differs from the bog standard Classic Controller by adding some extra shoulder buttons, DualShock style. Presumably this means we'll be able to play GameCube games with it.
There's no pricing information or current indication that it'll be released over here, but we imagine it will eventually.
You may be able to read more about it on the company's website here if you speak Japanese, but we don't.
We've asked Nintendo UK for a comment.
UPDATE: Nintendo UK tells us there are currently "no plans at the moment" to bring the controller to Europe.
A cross between the original classic controller and the GameCube pad seems like a good idea to me, especially now they're not making any more WaveBirds.
For a start it has taken it's shape from the wavebird, which itself was similar in design to the PS2 controller which was a (very minor) evolution to the PS1 analogue controller, which in turn was an evolution of the original PS1 controller which had ripped off the button layout from the SNES controller..........
I can't think of any controller that has not at least borrowed ideas from others.
it looks like the lovechild of a snes and gamecube pad.
Why can't they just release an attatchment that allows you to plug your cube controller into the wiimote.
I'd derfinately get a couple of those.
I thought at first that this was an attachment that was going to make use of those attachment clips on the back of the Classic pad, after all there seems to be a clear join on the back of the controller between the top and bottom triggers. I then noticed that the small triggers were missing from the classic pad and realised that this is indeed a new controller. Why......? Would it have not been easier to make use of the attachment slots?
i'm not trying to sound stupid or anything, but can't the gamecube controller be used for playing wii game? i haven't actually thought about this before, and trying it would violate the bond between myself and watching what little decent daytime programmes i can find.....i haven't been on the wii in like 5 months, mostly because i would prefer to have a PROPER CONTROLLER

Why on earth did you buy it in the first place if you prefer a "Proper controller"? Also what defines proper? For instance RE5 on my 360 is not a patch on the controls for RE4 on the Wii.

I didn't personally buy it, it is console that is used by all the family. i'm not saying that i grudgingly hate the wii motion controller, i'm saying that for some games, like tomb raider aniversarys, its difficult to control lara and the camera, when the cursor is moving all over the screen. and where i have played most of the previous tomb raider games on playstation, its diffucult to get to grips with the motion controlling. to start with, when the wii first came out, i said that i would prefer one over a 360, but now the family has a wii, and my brother and i both share a 360, i don't really use the wii that much. i have to say that, if my pc has better than required spec of a game, i would spend more time playing pc games, than anything else. i have been violently ill, when i was younger, playing GTA on PC. i have a partially addictive nature

Fair enough. I would agree that some games would work better using the traditional control methods. However this is more to do with the developers than the machine. Some developers seem to shoe horn motion control in to the games when it is clearly not needed. However when a game has been written properly for the Wii I think the motion controls work brilliantly.
To the people asking, you usually can't use the Gamecube controllers to play Wii games unless it specifies on the box. The old GC pads work for GC games only.
Does this mean a move away from motion controls then? That "revolution" (pun intended) didn't last long.
Reverting to a standard pad means all the console has going for it is... Nintendo branding and a nifty blue light in the drive bay.

Well considering the Classic controller has been around for some time I dount it has anything to do with a move away from motion controls but everything to do with providing an alternative control method for the odd game that requires it.
I just see this as an improvement over the original classic controller, nothing more. Everyone prefers the gamecube controller to it, so it would only make sense to make a hybrid out of the two.

Yes.
They are going to drop motion control because they are releasing an updated version of the classic controller in Japan.
Engage brain before randomly bashing keyboard springs to mind...
As it's just been announced, it'll probably take NoE about five months to hear about it, seeing as they are that far out of the loop...

Also the classic controller plugs into your Wiimote so it's wireless wheras the GC one you have to sit closer to the TV because of the length of the wire.
Looks like quite a nice refinement to the existing classic controller.
The classic controller had a couple of holes in the back for attatchments maybe this isn't a new controller just attatchment, still want it like, hopefully will be released eventually. Something Wii really needs though (aparts from the HDD) controllers with chargable batteries and a connector from the bottom to the console, or some for the current controllers but not the crap third party type.

Isn't the classic controller mainly for the virtual console games though? I can't see Nintendo releasing any games exclusively for this. The only full Wii game I have that utilities it is Smash Bros, and thats optional!
I wouldn't see this a step away from motion but more of a step toward Nintendo looking for another quick way to fleece the ever shrinking pockets of it's consumers.
As is the way, a company tastes success, rides on it, gets power made and greedy then falls at the next console.
