Microsoft has officially ended support for out of warranty original Xboxes, meaning that from today if your giant black box kicks the bucket then you're going to have to get the screwdriver and soldering iron out yourself - because MS won't do it.
"On March 2, 2009, service repairs for Original Xbox video game systems for which the Warranty has expired will no longer be available," reads the Xbox support website. "Any other technical support, documents, and content, however, will continue to be available to all our customers.
"On March 2, 2009, technical support documents and content will be available online. Our Web sites will host a wealth of previous and new how-to, troubleshooting, and configuration content that has been revised and updated to meet our customer needs and current support model.
"If you have an Original Xbox console that is in Warranty that requires a repair, you will be able to submit an exchange request for an upgrade to an Xbox 360 gaming console online," it says, which is fair enough.
Our condolences go out to the four people still using their original Xbox. You behind-the-times gits. We've got four in the corner that we have stacked up as an extra seat.
didnt they kill this back in like 2005? :S, i remmeber reading in an xbox 360 mag few months before the 360 was due to launch and it said MS stopped support for it
that was software support. They stopped making games for it preety much as soonas the 360 was launched. It's why the 360 has a few odd ports of games that were canned for the xbox. like bully.
I'd say the same was true for the wii if i was feeling generous but its more likely that most of the ports on that are shovelware. The only exception seems to be the Godfather game as they really did put a lot of effort into it.
They ended firstparty support in late 2005. Then third party and harware manufacturing stopped in late 2006 althugh madden 09 came out for it in the US last year.
The original xbox was a great console. its a shame that its full potential was never realised and it had a short lifespan. Criterion's Black was a great game that came out just before the 360 was released. it should have been given more time.
That was a great console. Halo was the first game I played on it.
I wouldn't exactly label it with the word Great. It had a few good games. It depends what you were in to genre wise, but the PS2 and Gamecube ripped it apart it terms of the sheer number of quality titles.
Ninja Gaiden Black was the only real great game I like which the console gave us.
Anyhoo, who would want to own that behemoth now?! It takes up enough space to store 2 passenger planes!
Ah the great big box was great. Kicked the crap out of the PS2 whenever a multiplatform game was released. Then again so did the Gamecube. Why did people own PS2s again. oh yeah easy to modd and good exclusives.
On a side note how much bigger is the original xbox to the 360 and PS3 i'm sure they're comparable especially the PS3 damn things huge.

ahh yea thats right, lol but what made me laugh was madden 09 for the original xbox last year, i dunno if that actually got released
I was particularly fond of Halo (Those grass textures!) and it is still my favourite Halo game by far. PGR was great, as was Rally Challenge. I also really enjoyed Jet Set Radio - the music being a highlight.
The support just didn't last long enough for me, so I got a PS2 for GOW and many other crackers.
i still got my old xbox got it back in 03 for shenmue 2 haha, got loaaaads games for it recently that i missed out on last gen, so ill play thru those wen the next drought comes
"It takes up enough space to store 2 passenger planes!" And makes about the same amount of noise when on.
I can't believe how many people are saying the original XBOX was a great machine. It was a steaming pile of crap, with very few good games.
It was the only last gen machine with a harddrive, a GOOD dashboard, custom soundtracks, DLC, FOUR player split screen and an online community. If that sounds like a "pile of steaming crap" I'd love to see what you were gaming on!
A few good games!? Erm... Halo 1+2 PGR 1+2 Fable Jet Set Radio Ninja Gaiden Dead Or Alive 3, Xtreme and Ultimate Odd World Forza
To name but a FEW first party games. What ever console you're gaming on now...if you think DLC and online gaming is great...just think. Xbox owners done all that last gen. When you were forced to stick with your crappy TWO player split screen.
Also, people commenting on it's size make me laugh. It's smaller than a PS3 and only VERY slightly bigger than the 360.

KOTOR 1+2, Jade Empire and Panzer Dragoon Orta as well. Coupled in with the features you mentioned, makes it a great machine IMO.
it wasn't the only console to have a HDD the PS2 did as well. What did you think the big square hole in the back of it was for. Granted it was poorly implemented and never really used. but it was there.
The Xbox was definately a much better machine though.

He did say "with". As in, straight out of the box, I never saw a PS2 come with one
If i remember rightly, and i do, the Gamecube also had 4 player split screen - smash bros melee, timesplitters 2 to name but 2 great 4 player games i distinctly remember playing

I took that to mean at all. Great thing about the english language there's plaenty of room for interpretation. Iknow it never was released over here but i'm pretty sure you could get one with a HDD and Final Fantasy XI in the states/Japan.
On a side note i hope they bring Timesplitters 4 out on the wii. 2 was definately best played on the GC and the wii has the right controls and style to make it great.
Title should read: MS officially ends Xbox 1 support... back in 2005
When was the last time a game launched on it? The irony is though that you probably won't need the warranty because it'll last for years to come. Same can't be said for its sibling...
We've got so much to thank for with the big black box. The controller S was probably the best controller ever, Xbox Live was great and the power in the console meant you could play games you could see, rather than the jaggy PS2 games. Goodnight sweet prince.
