We can't imagine there are many of you still using the old blades dashboard interface on your 360s, but if you are you might be interested to know that you'll soon be forced to upgrade to the New Xbox Experience.
Microsoft plans to ensure every 360 owner updates to the NXE as it's no longer applying updates or security measures for the blades service, according to our mates at Edge-Online.
Don't want to update? Tough really - the NXE update will soon be coming bundled onto new 360 games, meaning you'll need to update your system to play them.
Tom Clancy's Hawx and MLB: 2K9 are the first titles to ship with the update already loaded onto their discs, says MS.
I think the NXE streamlined Live really well, everything you need is now in a easier place tio find it and the content seems to be updated more regulary (it might be that i wasnt looking properly previously though).
And if you cant live without the Blades just push that big button in the middle of your controller for the Blades. Simple really.
Can't really blame them. Bug testing and compatibility checking is hard enough without having to do it twice
I was wondering how much of an issue it's likely to cause for games that use all of the DVDs but the NXE wasn't that big a download anyway, so it won't make any difference.
sounds like an anti piracy tactic. Don't know if anyones managed to hack NXE yet. Nintendo do it with most new wii games to put everyone on the newest firmware, which from reports c**ks up the Homebrew Channel, well the backup loader at least.
I mean, fair enough it IS a better system to be fair. The only thing I really hate about it is the small "crashes" you get when you hit the Xbox button in the midst of a game to send a message, and then after sending said message, press the xbox button to return to game and everything freezes for about 30 seconds.
As it's a more complex system, the NXE runs slower and I hope they find a way of speeding it up.
I know a few guys who didn't update solely because they never go online with their 360. Adding it to the discs makes sense. They should get official Xbox magazines to include it as well on their discs.

I'm glad this doesn't only happen with me. It's a right PITA and I hope they address it. Even booting up seems to take longer - it certainly takes longer for your friends to appear.
As for this news, can't say I'm surprised. Anyone that is desperately clinging onto the blades, get over it - it's not that big a deal
am i the only person that finds the new dash childish? i hate having to have a kiddie avatar to look at each time i boot up. might be an idea for ms to put an option in to take this off.
Last night I tried to change my theme. I knew where it was on the blades system but I'll be buggered if I could find it last night on the NXE system. I spent 20 mins looking for it and in the end gave up.
I also don't like using the market place with NXE. Everything takes so long to load up. I know what I want and where it is, do we really need the nice images to load so I can be on my way?
Granted, it does the interviews and streaming very well but well the rest of the NXE is too slow, they need to work at it.

From memory... My Xbox > 2nd tab (your profile) > scroll down to 'Change Theme'...
I don't remember it being too hard to find anyway.

I found it hard to find that first time too. It used to be in with the system settings if i remember rightly. Now they've just moved it to a more logical place.
NXE is just a bad XMB rip off, and im sorry but they mini characters you need to choose from are gimpy as hell. what if your not a teenager? seems a bit childish.
the blades were much better, on the carbon skin.. looked great in HD.
Thats your internet connection, not the dashboard being slow. If your connection is working fast and properly, the marketplace load is instant.
Regards
J
Not necessarily, it takes ages (about a minute - doesn't sound too long but it is) for the option to download items to appear for me and others. It's apparently down to how much stuff you've downloaded in the past as it checks everytime before a download (purchase/free). Browsing the marketplace is fine but once you've found an item the actual download link will be greyed out and you'll get the little xbox logo until it's done it's drm checks or whatever crap it does. Really annoying and MS don't seem to be doing anything to fix it.
Anyway as regards to the article it makes sense to get everyone on the same platform, but there will still be plenty out there still on the blades albeit off the grid.

Surprised to see you in a 360 thread
Avatars are optional FYI.
well that was my experience when i had one.
i got made to choose one.
Microsoft reps turn up with a loaded gun?
It was in the news a while back. Turned up at his house, forced him to watch while they played naked Twister with his missus. Now STD is in the midst of an elaborate revenge mission that involves visiting threads concerning MS and spouting venom.
I believe the news-piece said the evil MS reps were influenced by some movie... Can't recall the name, something about some Kaiser Soze...
I prefer the old Blade system. I think the NXE is far too graphical and most of the time you only know where stuff is becuase you remember where it was on the blade system and you imagine where it going to be with the NXE. I have just started programming using XNA. I knew excatly where the XNA options were with the blades but with the NXE the XNA option is hidden very, very deep in the download section. And to make it worse MS have not updated their web site that tell you how to set up XNA on the 360. It still refers to the blade system and is no use what-so-ever if you are using NXE.
I much prefer the XMB to NXE, all the options are on screen at once and everything is easy to find. Your eyes are not darting all over the screen to take in all the graphical imagey that is trust upon you.
Although I have now finally got used to NXE I do prefer Blades, and tend to hit the Xbox button and do everything I want from there as it takes less time. I also do not like how it starts up on the Spotlight section instead of My Xbox, it's like when you turn your sky box over to watch something that started only 4 minutes ago and instead of what you actually want to see you get an advert instead.

Except you don't have to wait four minutes to press up on the joypad!

I could be wrong, but i think if you go into system set up you can change the start up section order.

Quite a few of my friends are the same. Some don't even have internet at their house. Madness!
And I've found the guide really slow when I bring it up, checking out friends at least. I always do this on L4D and Bomberman because people seem to enjoy hosting a game and then buggering off, this way at least you can see if they're away.
I also checked out my rep. I had 40% or something negative, of which 66% were for unsporting conduct and 33% for leaving games early. I never play to p**s people off because I don't see the point and I only quit games early if the lag is awful or something comes up and I have to go. At least L4D you can go idle, that's a really good feature for co-op games.

Dude, it's actually really easy to find. You just have to forget about where everything was on the blades & stop that from influencing you on where you look for stuff.
Change theme is on the first page of 'My Xbox' along with edit profile, edit avatar, view rep etc.
I'm almost certain I double checked there but I'll check tonight again. I much prefer the blades system but well no use whinging about it. I play games, not adjust settings.
I haven't got Xbox live but I'm going to set up a silver account soon, possibly this weekend because I want to be able to install some games. But this would mean I wouldn't have to but it's not going to cost me anything so I'll just do it anyway.
Perhaps we'll be seeing some games need some features installing off a second disc like Tekken 6?

Forza 3 is rumoured to be the same with having a second disk so installation may be necessary.
