BioShock 2: Co-op, Soviets?

First details on highly anticipated follow-up dug up *UPDATE*
UPDATE: A 2K spokesperson has told CVG that the publisher "can't confirm any content details at this stage."

UPDATE 2: Game Informer mag has pretty much debunked the web 'details' altogether. It says in a statement:

"The Bioshock 2 news that is running around the web is quite...interesting. While we cant confirm or deny anything that is being said, let us give you a quick piece of advice: don't believe everything you read from some dude on the Internet.

"If people had actually read the Bioshock 2 cover story from this month's issue...well, you will see how it matches up with the real deal when it arrives this weekend, as the rumors floating around are so amazingly wrong on a very "big" point. Watch for the magazine in stores and in mailboxes this weekend, so you will have your information soon enough."

ORIGINAL STORY:

What are being reported as the first details on BioShock 2: Sea of Dreams have emerged via the new issue of US mag Game Informer.

According to supposed subscriber holders on 2K's forums the second game will feature two-player co-op, underwater exploration levels and controversially, no Big Daddies what-so-ever.

Potential Spoilers Ahead

Apparently the game (which has now been confirmed for a PS3 release) starts of with you, private investigator Jack Abbott, as your daughter's snatched from your New York City beach house by the now infamous Big Sister - the main horror of the game.

After a boat chase and deadly encounter with the mysterious assailant you're knocked out and end up back in the underwater city of Rapture.

Seven years have gone by since the events of the first game and Rapture's even more flooded and ruined than before - some levels will even require you to don a diving suit to progress.

But this time you're not the only one who stumbles upon Rapture... according to the details, at some point in the game a Soviet submarine stumbles upon the city and you're left as the sole defence against the dirty Ruskies from acquiring Adam and using it against the Americans in the Cold War.

Soviet baddies are said to be far smarter than the dopey Splicers, using cover and flanking intelligently as you'd expect.

In the search for your missing daughter you'll progress through unexplored levels of the city including a Zoo complete with freakish, spliced animals. A spliced Rhino and an "epic underwater boss fight" with a gigantic squid are noted.

New enemies include spliced dogs and bipedal robots which can be hacked in the same way as the machines from the first game, claim 2K forum boys.

Two new plasmids have also been detailed; one slows down time for a few seconds, the other, more interesting mutation is Telepathy, which gives you the ability to eavesdrop on the thoughts of NPCs and gain information, such as the combination for a keypad.

Co-op and the cutting of Big Daddies might raise a few eyebrows, but we're confident this'll turn out brilliant. We'll verify the info when a copy of Game Informer turns up...

Don't forget to read our summary of the officially released plot details here.

Co-op, Big Sisters, Bullet Time, Underwater Sections...oh dear, consider my expectations sunk!
monkey_puncher on 13 Mar '09
Sounding awesome!

I dont want to get carried away (as I have said before, no Ken Levine means im a little dubious) but that sounds brilliant!

Crazy Mutants, Co Op, Russians and Underwater Squid Fights (so far ...)?

Count me in!
StonecoldMC on 13 Mar '09
I feel exhilerated just reading and imagining the opening!
erd3x on 13 Mar '09
Co-op? Oh come on! What's the point of a creepy atmosphere in a twisted underwater world if you're gonna have a loud-mouthed American teenager screaming in your ear? If they add multiplayer, they will kill the franchise in my eyes. Crying or Very sad

Edit: Oops, got a little carried away there, I guess I don't have to play with anybody else if I don't want too.

Yes, just as I was expecting there are going to be underwater bits, sounds good. And I agree with the comment above, the beggining does sound very exciting. Can't wait. I hope they give us a new trailer soon. Very Happy

Surely thats what your Friends list is for though?

I loved the first game and hope the second is as good but my expectations are starting to drop. no Ken Levine, Soviets. its starting to sound like a generic fps.
TeamVance on 13 Mar '09
Although I hate making judgments until the game is actually in my hands (and I hate reading previews but I just. can't. Help it!), My heart sank a little when I read "Underwater sections"

One of the main things I really liked about the first was the lack of swimming/underwater levels...

For me it's up there with the dreaded "mine cart" level...

But I have faith in them... I'm sure they'll pull it off in such a way that i'm not even aware of it, so to speak.

exactly. the amount of people who've been moaning about co-op modes and having screaming american teenagers playing with them is crazy. this is what your friends are for. i played through Gears 1 & 2, Crackdown and Halo 3 co-op on the xbox and am running through COD:WaW on the PS3 with friends and it just adds to the experience especially in squad based games where i.e. you can get one of your mates to take the sniper out whilst you cover him.
if implemented properly co-op adds to the game and if you just play with friends it will usually be more enjoyable.

but no big daddy's Crying or Very sad somehow i think we'll see one in there somewhere.

The problem is how do they work co op into the story. You're on your own so how do they work in someone suddenly coming along and giving you a hand.
voodoo341 on 13 Mar '09
this has a lot of potential. i think coop could work brilliantly if done right.

having soviets in it sounds a bit dodgy though

i was just meaning co-op in general. i've no idea how they're gonna work it in to this.

possibly the sole survivor of a boat crash, or a prisoner the russians have brought with them. either that or its his wifey whom he couldn't trust enough to leave in the house. i'll leave that to them but as long as its implemented properly with a decent story it should be good.
ensabahnur on 13 Mar '09
they've been replaced witht the big sisters then.

Its a shame but it makes sense.

The opening does sound good and i'll be happy to see more of rapture. So long as the ruskies aren't just generic soldiers i'll be happy especially if they've already been partaking of a lil adam.
WHERESMYMONKEY on 13 Mar '09
Underwater sections, eh?

I'm the next Nostradamus, I tell thee.
altitude2k on 13 Mar '09
I'm not convinced that sounds good.

Co-op I can deal with. It is possible to retain the spook-factor with another person, as long as neither of you is singing or doing something stupid. Sort of gives it a buddy-cop movie feel Smile

But bringing in the other human enemy seems to be a little bit on the gung-ho side. That's more action than atmosphere and I'd assume most of the forces would drop ammo so the tension could be lost.
Dajmin on 13 Mar '09

i can see the game maybe starting like that until the ruskies get exposed to the old adam. then they'll probably start the descent into Rapture madness after that.
ensabahnur on 13 Mar '09
F*cked up zoo animal splicers FTW!

Spider-fish and Ice-monkeys please!!
khr0nik on 13 Mar '09
maybe you're on the boat with someone else in the begining and you both get taken to rapture. in single player perhaps they get bumped off at the beginning and you carry on. in co-op they don't get bumped off a player2 assumes control.

maybe not...

sounds good anyway as long as the russians get a bit f'ked up down there as well just to give it an edge.
shellster2 on 13 Mar '09
Maybe the co-op will be respective parents. You know people will get p**sy if they constantly end up playing as the Mum...

I want to see a spliced-up Narwhal!
altitude2k on 13 Mar '09
co-op, no! please have a f**king option to turn it on and off god damnit.
mutated zoo? HELL YES, ditto to the underwater, clever soviets and squid bashing.
i've no doubt it'll be awesome, sad to hear about the big daddies but the big sisters are the new black.

You could befriend the narwhal, become one with their brood, then use telekinesis to throw them at the giant squid!

Aaaahhh, the possibilities are endless...
khr0nik on 13 Mar '09

You're a frequent visitor to Weebl's Stuff, aren't ya? Smile
Dajmin on 13 Mar '09
spliced up monkey fish for the win or fire breathing tigers, intelligent pandas with the ability to talk and throw lightning would also be good.

the posibilities are endless.

Nope, it just hasn't been long since I watched Futurama (Bender's Big Score??) where Fry adopts a Narwhal. They're just so ridiculous. Kinda like the platypus, a practical joke by God.

Is that last part a Pratchett nod or am I sad?
The majority of our antipodean animal friends are f*cked up. I always expected the platypus (or platypii cos it sounds funny) to be this sizeable, cantanckerous duck monster. I was quite surprised when I saw one in Taronga zoo and realised I could fit it in my shoe if I so desired.
khr0nik on 13 Mar '09
Co-op is a mistake.

It will ruin the atmosphere(if they is any, given that we are re-visiting rapture) of the game.
Zonf on 13 Mar '09
What scares me most about these developments is that they sound generic. When I first read about the upcoming Bioshock I spent most of my time thinking 'What the hell...?' or 'Or really don't get what they're on about...'.
Then it arrived, and the result was surprising, enthralling and atmospheric.
Having read this article, with the loss of the Big Daddy and the underwater stuff, AND the co-op it's all a bit more predictable... I fear for Bioshock.
As long as they just add the co-op and don't try to write in some bogus justification for the second player being there, maybe it won't be so bad.
Blatant on 13 Mar '09
But then again, if they write in a second character that's mandatory and will be with you from start to finish, you run the risk of effectively introducing something that can make the game rubbisher in single player. If anything because you rely on the AI to not make the person in question a complete moron.

Like with RE5 for instance.
khr0nik on 13 Mar '09
I never found the Big Daddies that frightening, to be honest. I've always found lean, tall, fast enemies much scarier ever since the one that appears at the end of the first level when I played Heretic as a kid.
altitude2k on 13 Mar '09
Guys, there's new info on www.somethinginthesea.com
Little Moth on 13 Mar '09
I'm excited! As far as anyone complaining about underwater parts, it's a very realistic addition. Rapture was leaking in places for the first game. All the fighting leading up to and in the original would have seriously weakened the structural integrity of certain areas. With nobody left alive to repair it, then it wouldn't be long before things started breaking and areas flooding.

There are plenty of ways they can work co-op into it realistically, and I have to say I love the idea of it. No matter how many plasmid slots you got there never seemed enough slots for all the combinations of powers I wanted to use. Each person having their own set of plasmids sounds like a setup for fun co-op action.
wprusik on 13 Mar '09
HOLY f**king s**t... have you all seen this? get to play as the big daddy? if this is fake i'm gonna break something.

Sinthetic on 13 Mar '09
The one thing that almost spoilt the first game for me was the respawning enemies, and I really hope that they ditch that stupid idea in the second game. It took a lot of the satisfaction away from clearing an area for me, only to come back later and be attacked by the same baddies I'd aleady delt with before.

Apart from that though I really enjoyed the original and I can't wait to play this.
sonic_uk on 13 Mar '09

http://forums.gametrailers.com/thread/bioshock-2-info-and-2-scans---/758923

Sorry mate, but this is as fake as it gets. It says that you will be playing the first Big Daddy ever, this is not possible since Bioshock 2 is set 7 years after the original Bioshock. It also says that you will be fighting other Big Daddies, once again impossible when 2K have confirmed that there are gonna be 0 Big Daddies in Bioshock (they are being replaced by the Big Sisters). Also it has been revealed that the main character is gonna be a private eye and not a Big Daddy.

To be honest I'm happy that this info is BS because from what I read it looks like you would be protecting Little Sisters the entire game like at the end of the original Bioshock and that part of the game was definitely the worst bit.
Little Moth on 13 Mar '09
i agree pal, could well be b.s and that bit did suck.
read the latest post on that thread i linked, does make sense too.
Sinthetic on 13 Mar '09
So glad this turned out to be rubbish... But I learnt an important lesson from this whole debacle...

No more preview reading of games I care about for me. I want to enjoy it when I've got it in my hands and not have things spoilt for me.
