Capcom has defended itself after a backlash over the announcement of three new multiplayer modes for Resident Evil 5, to be introduced via paid DLC.
The patch, costing $4.99 on PSN, or 400 MS points on 360, will introduce new Versus modes - Slayer and Survivor (read the full details here).
But there's confusion over what the patch actually does, because it doesn't add any characters or weapons - just the Versus mode. Capcom has told CVG it's not just an unlock patch for content already in the game.
"Although Versus mode makes use of the assets that exist in the game, the functionality is not currently in the game and is above and beyond the initial scope of Resident Evil 5," Capcom told us.
"We have never included a Versus mode in Resident Evil before, and as well as the costs of development of the feature, there's also additional bandwidth costs associated with it," it added.
That doesn't sound like much of an explanation to me. How do you quantify scope anyway? So it's to use the same assets and it's just some code we're downloading?
If is doesn't add new features, characters or levels to the game and just "unlocks" a game mode, then of course people will be paying to unlock an already present feature!
That's pretty s**tty Capcom and is going to p**s a lot of people off!!
If you go to the xbox forum and look up 'dlc watchdogs needed' you'll see that I'm trying to get all this looked at more closely.
I for one feel this is getting out of hand and unless me take a stand against this, it's just going to be the way.
I've managed to get a response from gamepolitics.com, they don't have a position on it but say that they'll be happy to look into it.
I'm speaking as a long time gamer and find this all very very insulting. It's a false economy, created out of greed and is benefiting the companies and not the consumer in anyway. I'm pretty sure that with the right course of action we can nip this in the bud.
what with this and the 3 DLC packages for SF4 it looks like Capcom have jumped feet first into the download market, not realizing that we like a bit of time to play the game first and we certainly don't like the look of things that should be on the disc being fired out 10 mins after release. poor show.
though any DLC for Devil May Cry 4 would be welcomed.(come on Super Dante/Nero unlock)

I doubt you'd only be charging 400 MS points if this was true. Map packs alone usualy cost more & they arent as complicated as adding whole new modes plus theres no extra bandwith really associated with them.
Do you reckon thats why there is no game genie/shark/action reply type products for the 360 and ps3? cos the DLC stuff thats on discs already could be got at?
Enjoying Resi 5 so far same as I enjoyed SF4 when that came out but I wont be paying for DLC for either of them games. Capcom are really starting to take the p**s now. They have possibly the 2 biggest selling games of this year and they are trying to milk them for everything already.

I don't mind when a company releases something new after the games been on sale for some time, just to keep peoples interests up, but these DLCs' that get launched at the same time as the game are obviously content that's been held back to cash in and make some extra bucks.
What do we expect? The Street Fighter IV costume pack downloads clearly unlock content already on the disc, as they're only 100kb-ish each. I found the Yoda download for PS3 Soul Calibur weird too; it was just under 8MB, which can't be enough for a character model, but seems too large to be an unlock code. Content already on the disc should be playable right off the disc, no download needed -- free or not, it's unfair on those who don't have their consoles online.
A lot of people bitch and whine but still buy it. That's why these game publishers do it because the market is there. The LittleBigPlanet stuff is a joke, to make an example.
And the Street Fighter IV costume packs (oh, by Capcom) that are for sale are again a really good example of content that would otherwise be unlocked by achieving certain objectives in the game ten years ago.
The modes being added were never originally intended to be in the game at all which requires extra development time (or they would be available for download already). You also have to think about the pre-owned market, and software piracy, which is still a huge issue and removes money from the industry.
The costumes in street fighter, yeah that's going overboard, did you all totally overlook the tournament DLC for street fighter 4 which is an extra mode AND being added for free.
At the end of the day, at least for resident evil 5, you are paying for things that have never been introduced in a resident evil game before, things that will require extensive testing and have nothing to do whatsoever with what capcom said would be available on release.
I fully understand not wanting to pay for content that isn't worth it, outfits and the like. They added multiplayer mercenaries online for free, despite not promising it (the patch you download when you start up RE5 on xbl for the first time is the online mercs patch). Just don't buy them if you don't want to play them, you still get the game that was promised, wanting the stuff for free that WASNT promised is a little naieve on your parts though.
The RE5 disc gives you all you could have expected. A great Single/Co-op game in the mold of RE4, and the Mercenaries side game.
I don't have a problem with Capcom charging for the Multi player because I know that what I wanted is on the disc and was a bargain.
Comparing this to Left 4 Dead download being free isn't viable in my opinion, because Left 4 Dead was have the length of RE5 to begin with, so we are owed the free download to meet the value of RE5 to begin with.
Just thought I'd point out that the 'new' Versus mode is detailed in the official game guide. It was certainly planned for long enough ago to make the guide. Shame it didn't make the disc.
anyone playing this game be careful DO NOT go back to a previous chapter for any reason because you will have to re-do the latest chapter your up to. i was on the final mission last part of the last chapter went back to a previous chapter using the chapter select to collect some ammo. (because a walkthrough from gamefaq told me that i could do that stupid me believed them)than went to go back to the final chapter but instead of taking me up to my latest save it took me to the beginning of that chapter wich is like 1 hour away from where i was. now im realy p**sed because at the beginning of that chapter theres like 5 mini bosses you have to beat and there realy realy hard now im going to have to do them again NOT HAPPY. CAPCOM NEXT TIME IF YOUR GOING TO DO SOMETHING DO IT PROPERLY NOT HALF ASKED. the chapters in resi 5 are verry long so whats the point of being able to go from chapter to chapter but you cant specify what part of that chapter. why couldent they make it like resistance 2 or killzone 2?

super dante/nero are available in the game without dlc man. i can't remember what i did to open them up but i've clocked every difficulty and they are there-i think it was legendary dark knight difficulty.
as for the 5 dlc: most dlc is a con on a good day,the only notable exceptions being shivering isles, lost and damned and the like.
sounds like capcom have took a leaf out of namcos book and are planning on raping a few muppets who think it's value for money to be sold a feature that should've been available from the start.
it cost around a 120 quid for ace combats dlc i wonder how much 5's will cost at the end.

aye but you've got to beat the Dante must Die difficulty but i'm struggling to get through the forest levels as Dante on this difficulty and i've been stuck on it for about 6 months. and its beginning to p**s me off having to go back to different levels just to get enough red orbs to buy health and the like.

dante must die? that's it,i couldn't remember. i haven't played it for a while. know what you mean about the grinding too.
oh and if you think that's hard just wait until hell and hell mode. it's a tad tricky.
