Ever wondered what your Wii games would look like in lovely hi-definition? Well thanks to the release of the Wii 'Dolphin' emulator this weekend, now you can.
The emulator, which allows you to legally copy your games over and run them on PC, enables to ability to play Mario Kart Wii, Metroid Prime 3 and the like at stupid 720p resolutions.
It's a bit buggy at current (check out the 15fps framerate) but the potential for even lovelier visuals is massive. Check out the videos below and for goodness sake don't forget to press the 'HD' button.
They look slightly sharper, which is generally the point of HD. Without the tons of anti-aliasing and texture filtering applied it would look horrific though, Wii games are meant to be played on a standard definition set.
If all Wii games looked as good as Metroid, Maro Galaxy and Smash Bros with their 60 frames of (hardly pushing the Wii) glory, I doubt many would complain.
I must be missing something. If you plug your Wii into any HDTV then the TV will automatically upscale the picture for you to fit the screen.
You won't get true HD unless the game was coded for it in the first place i.e. you can't get the detail present in true HD with pixels that weren't there in the first place.

The geometry is being rendered at a higher resolution.
You can run Half Life 1 in 1080p. The textures will be blurry as hell, and it won't look as good as Half Life 2, but it'll still be a lot sharper than if you ran it in 480p.
OK IM WRONG FUNNY I WOULDNT HAVE POSTED IT IF I WAS WRONG OR OPINIONATED
I ONLY POST FACTS THERE FOR I AINT WRONG
Were it not for this wonderfully comical piece of circular reasoning, I would have assumed you were just a random internet moron instead of a rather well played parody of one.
The misspelling of "therefore" was a particular highlight. Bravo!
its just upscale I PLAY Wii AT 768P becaouse thats my lcd HDTVs native resolution....
wii video out signal = 480p MY TV SCALES TO 768P
those videos dont show anything better than any wii being played on any desent HD TV
THERES ALSO THINGS LIKE 100HZ 120HZ AND XD ENGINE these things are built into hd tv sets THESE VIDEOS ARE SHOWING NOTHING NEW
IF YOU WANT HD Wii GAMES WAIT FOR ""SUPER RESOLUTION""
SUPER RESOLUTION SCALING WILL ALLOW WII GAMES TO LOOK ABOVE 720P NATIVE AND CURRECTLY DISPLAY ON A 1080P SCREEN
ITS NICE WEN YOU KNOW WHAT UR TALKING ABOUT
Wiiboy you are the very definition of someone who doesn't have a clue what they are on about.
Great so you own a 768p TV, in other words you were daft enough to buy a TV that doesn't fit standard formats, way to go with knowing exactly what you are on about. I would have thought the way you go on you would have settled for nothing less than 1080p/24.
I currently run my Wii via composite to a Denon AVR-1909, which is an excellent upscaller (and far better than that offered by the vast majority of HDTV's) and it doesn't get close to what is offered by native HD video feeds.
So I'm currently playing Wii titles at 1080p, however it may look better than they do normally, but they are still not a patch on true native HD. Jagglies galore fill them, textures look poor and artifacting occurs. The reason why is quite simple, you can only go so far with upscalling, and how far is very dependent on the source material (which is why a good DVD transfer will look fine when upscalled, but a poor DVD transfer will be almost unwatchable when upscalled), and as such the Wii doesn't offer the best source material around.
As for your 'Super Resolution' as you keep going on about, I hope you are aware what Toshiba use to get the processing grunt to do that with?
The Cell processor, that's right the same chip that you love to slag off in the PS3 is exactly what is powering the latest gen of Toshiba TVs that offer the upscalling you love so much.
the videos are scaling thats exactly what EVERY hd tv set does with a wii game THAT IS FACT
768P IS THE STANDARD DISPLAY OF 99.9% OF 720P NATIVE HD TV SETS ITS LABELED 720P BUT ITS ACUALLY 768P
THAT GOES FOR SAMSUNG SONY LG SHARP EVERYBODY
NATIVE RESOLUTION OF 99% OF HD TV SETS IS NOT 720P OR 1080I ITS 768P
UR 720P IS DISPLAYED FULL SCREEN AT 768P
UR 1080I IS CONVERTED AND DISPLAYED 768P
UR 480I/P 576I/P IS SCALED UP TO 768P
FACTS IDIOTS FACTS
GO CHECK THE AVERAGE NATIVE RESOLUTION OF HD TV SETS ITS """""CLEARLY"""""""""
768P YOU BORN IDIOTS
SAMSUNG/SONY/SHARP/LG/HITACHI THE LIST GOES ON ITS NATIVE 768P
UR CORRECTED YOU BUFFOONS
Oh dear another wonderful CAPS LOCK tirade from the genus of Wiiboy.
First off not all upscalling is the same as you are implying here, yes all HD TVs upscale, but the quality differs massively from set to set. That's without looking at stand-alone upscalers and scalers built into AV receivers, both of which will generally outperform almost all TV scaleing.
As for 99.9% of all HD sets being 768p, utter rubbish, however you carry on being happy with a signal that is up and down converted left right and centre before being displayed.
Me I will go for 1:1 pixel mapping every time.
Yes a good number of 720p sets do have a screen res of 768, but certainly not all of them, and certainly not 99.9%
That doesn't however get away from one of my points, which is why if you are so damn obsessed with getting the very best out of your Wii you are not using a 1080p set?
THE VIDEOS ARE SCALED WII 480P TO 720P
IM EXPERIANCING THIS AT HOME
480P WII IN VIDEO OUT TO SCREEN IS 720P MODE WITCH IS 768P NOT 720P ON 99.9% OF ALL HD TV SET EVER MADE
""""""""""FACT"""""""""""""""""
No you are not as you have already said you are getting a 480p to 768p conversation, which means you are getting distortion of the image as its scaled to meet a differing format.
If you were getting 720p you would also be getting black bars making up the remaining 40 lines.
SUPER RESOLUTION = NEAR PERFECT HD FROM NON HD AGAIN FACT
WII ON A NEXT GEN TOSHIBA SUPER RESOLUTION TV = 480P IN AND SUPER RESOLUTION 960P SCALLED TO 720P 1080I/P OUT TO SCREEN WITH NEAR 1080P HD QUALITY
SUPER RESOLUTION USES GENUINE SUPER RESOLUTION TECH AND SUPER UPCONVERTION TO ALLOW A NATIVE QUALITY 960P IMAGE
THE SCREEN OUT JUST FORMATS THAT 960P TO ETHER OF THE DISPLAY MODES
720P(768P) 1080I 1080P THAT IS A FACT
No its not a proven fact at all, far from it.
Toshiba's Super Resolution is a stunning product, but if you knew even the smallest thing about it you would know that it requires around 3 hours to process an average DVD to its fullest ability (as Toshiba demo'd at CES '0.
The retail system are not running to the same standard and will not produce 'near perfect HD' at all.
Its also interesting to note that you are ignoring the fact that the chip doing this is a Cell, the exact same chip that runs the PS3.
TOSHIBA HITACHI AND BROADCOM ALL WORKING ON SUPER RESOLUTION CHIPS AND PROCESSORS
http://uk.gamespot.com/pages/forums/show_msgs.php?topic_id=25893072 PROOF OF 720P BEING 768P IDIOTS
OH LOOK ALL BUT A FEW HD TV SETS ARE INFACT 768P NOT 720P
YOU SAD ACT SONY FANS KNOW NOTHING
Oh I do love an idiot, first of all those links have proven nothing at all. They don't even address you're point at all, did you even bother reading them before posting?
Secondly you once again slag off Sony while banging on about the Toshiba chips.
Get this through your thick skull the Toshiba chip and the PS3 chip are the same damn thing. Toshiba use the Cell for its latest gen scaling.
WII 480P OR DVD 480P PLUS SUPER RESOLUTION = NEAR 1080P
PROVEN FACT
A SUPER WII I.E A DSI LIKE UPGRADED SPEC PLUS BUILT IN SUPER RESOLUTION WILL MAKE WII HD A 1080P 60 FRAMES CONSOLE WITH OUT LOADING TIMES
NO NEED TO GO THE PS3 X360 PC BIG HOT FAILING BOX DESIGN ROOT WITH TERRABLE LOAD TIMES
No it will not make a Wii produce 1080p video output, because we are talking about upscaling here.
Oh wait a minute are you talking about teh Toshiba tech being put in the Wii HD, now that does make me laugh. If that is indeed what you are claiming then the Wii would end up with a Cell processor inside it, the exact same as a PS3.
Hmmm I can certainly see Nintendo going for that........................oh wait, no I can't.
OH LOOK A ENGINEER JUST BITCH SLAPPED A LOAD OF """""""""""""""HARDLY CORE""""""""""""" GAMERS
Your an engineer, that I seriously doubt, so a question - exactly what do you hold an engineering degree in?
Given that you have no idea how scaling actually works, believe that 99.9% of all HDTV's are 768p and are not aware that the Toshiba tech you love so much is running the same processor as a PS3; hardly makes me feel 'bitch slapped at all'.
I mean come on 'bitch slapped', what are you twelve.
No one has disputed that scaling can be done via a HDTV, or a standalone scaler, or a AV scaler. So I don't really see who you are 'owning' or who the 'idiots' are? Unless you are talking about C&VG as a site and the person who wrote the piece? Now I hope that's not the case, as that would be rather rude.
I do however notice that you seem to be fond of talking to your self these days, self congratulations quite a worrying habit. I would seek some assistance for that if I was you.
I also see that you have ignored my request to know what you hold an engineering degree in, and failed to address why you want the same tech from a PS3 (which you quite clearly hate) in a Wii?
Or do these points get put in the same place as you claim that a Wii can be clocked to 3.2 ghz and then out perform both the 360 and PS3.
Or you unwillingness to discuss the 'borrowed' tech that Nintendo used on the DS (remember the Tiger game.com).
However for now I'm quite happy with the idea of you wanting a Cell processor in the next Wii.
Edited to add - don't PM me the exact same rubbish that you post in thread, you poorly spelt, grammatical poor, CAPS LOCK rants are bad enough once, but I certainly don't need my PM in-box spammed with the same thing.
SO THE PC IS RENDERING THE WII GAME AT 720P FUNNY THATS IMPOSABLE AS THE DATA IS A 480P GAME
On the offchance that you're actually serious:
The geometry can be rendered at any resolution you like. Games aren't "encoded" onto discs like films are.
I can run N64 games at 1600x1200 on my PC. No, that's not upscaling - that's natively rendering the assets at 1600x1200. The textures aren't designed for that resolution so the end result is a load of super sharp objects with blurry as hell paint jobs, but it is still rendering at a higher resolution to start with.
It's good to see that the ancient city of Ur still has some life left in it.
3. ITS NICE WEN YOU KNOW WHAT UR TALKING ABOUT
I bet it is. I don't know if what you claim is true or not, why discuss that, since you don't seem to care for open discussion. But just thinking you know what you are talking about is even better if can share that information in a logical manner, whereas you claim to know things but type in a way that just makes everybody else think you're the novelty of the day, like a fat kid in a You Tube video or some 12 year old kid that calls everybody a fag while playing Halo 3 on XBOX Live. In fact, I truly feel bad for your parents.
4. OK IM WRONG FUNNY I WOULDNT HAVE POSTED IT IF I WAS WRONG OR OPINIONATED I ONLY POST FACTS THERE FOR I AINT WRONG
Kid, you are wrong in so many ways that it would take me forever to list them. Here is a nickel's worth of free advice for you; use Mozilla Firefox, it has a built in spell checker, and stay off the meth.
