2.5 billion Xbox Achievements unlocked

That's a collective Gamerscore of 52 billion points - beat that!
Microsoft says that Xbox gamers have unlocked 2.5 billion Achievements, racking up a collective Gamerscore of 52 billion points.

"We never anticipated this reaction... where there are achievement fan sites and people playing games that they would never play [for the achievement points]," chuffed Xbox exec Aaron Greenberg told Gamasutra.

Greenberg also reckons that Achievements are driving 360 game sales, pointing to the console's attach rate of eight titles per system, which he said is the highest ever.

The massive number of Achievements unlocked equates to almost 150 per Xbox Live member, which certainly isn't bad going.

52 billion? impressive, but can they slip me 15pts so's i can break the 40,000 mark. don't know how many games i sifted through last night just trying to blag another 15pts but every game i have i'm a bit away from getting anything.

Doesn't surprise me. Achievements didn't interest me at all and were no factor in me buying a 360 at all but I love them now. Long may they continue.
svensk101 on 6 Apr '09
they would never play

AKA Achievement Whores.

Still, I've done it, I'm sure most 360 owners have at least once.

An impressive number, shame I only have about 13000 of them Crying or Very sad

I think it would be an achievement if Aaron G actually announced a new game, rather than boring us all to death with numbers.
Mark240473 on 6 Apr '09
MS get slated a lot for copying the ideas of other companies (but really there no worse than anyone else, its called Business) but I have to give them their dues for Achievements.

I have replayed many games that take that extra bit of care and thought into what Achievements they give out (the Orange Box, im looking at you) and it has certainly added to the way a lot of people play Games, long may that continue!

i wonder what's the percentage of 1000/1000 finished games.

Achievements were the best idea. I personally dislike playing games with no achievements now Laughing

the platinum in GTA4 would have been within grasp if it werent for that 'gobble gobble' trophy - get three strikes in a row in bowling (called a turkey)

Thanks for letting us know. I'll unlock that tonight!

i watched 3 or 4 youtube videos on it. all with different "tactics".

unless you can shove the analogue perfectly straight forward (you cant) its just luck.

there is no fool-proof method.

it would be easier to pull off in real life!

it works easier on the 360 pad(ain't being smart with that, i'm actually playing L+D on the 360 whilst playing the main game on the PS3) as i did manage it about my second attempt and nearly managed a perfect game. make sure your in the farthest lane left, take 2 full steps to the left swing it back for 1 second then straight forward. your right though, the dual shock is a bugger to get a straight line back to front(that ain't a dig at it). just keep trying and it'll eventually happen
ensabahnur on 6 Apr '09
Thats a lot of achievements. I have about 24,000 GS since i got my 360 at its release in 05. I dont buy games purely for them, but if i have the game, i sometimes like to play it multiable times again to get them, its adds replayabity in some games which is good.

I want my achievement for putting the Gnome in space in Half-Life 2 Episode 2 dammit Microsoft!
snips10 on 6 Apr '09
Must be said, I do play games that I would not normally touch, purely for more points. Also play through games more times in order to get the extra points available. I love them!

Not the online one's though, too many people arrange games to boost one another to get the achievements, ruining the game for everyone else.

Hopefully crack the 50k soon Twisted Evil

To be fair, Kudos to MS for the achievements. Whether you like them or not, they certainly promote more (average) games sales and bolster the quality titles with more replay value. Good business, good idea.

trophies are far better than achievements.

Carry on Standard, carry on.
StonecoldMC on 6 Apr '09
I've got just over 32000 at the moment. I like achievements and I'm quite proud of some like getting the "The Mile High Club" achievement on Call of Duty 4 to get 1000/1000 and getting 1000/1000 on Hitman Blood Money too. Probably got a few more I'm proud of too.

What I don't like are glitched achievements. I'm stuck on 900/1000 on Top Spin 2 because it didn't give me 100G when I got to rank 1. I've done it twice more in the hope it will unlock but nothing. A few more have glitched on me too.

The thing I hate about achievements though are the online ones. I'm sick of people dropping out of games purely because they are after "Streak" achievements and stuff like that. Games like Call of Duty 4 show you how it should be done. The perks and ranking system instead of achievements for online play is a much better idea.

A lot of older games are impossible to get achievements on because nobody plays them anymore. For instance, last night I spent ages trying to get a CO-OP battle on Ace Combat 6 and nobody ever came on. Or worse like NBA '06. I'm stuck on 940/1000 because the server has been closed and the last 60G was for winning an online game. It's not keeping me awake at night but it's annoying.
SoulChimera on 6 Apr '09
Glitched achievements have only raised their ugly head to me once, but annoyingly so on Skate I completed everything on that and it never gave me achievements, all the Skate challenges, pro challenges, everything. I’m still bitter about it, and as such a testament to how much achievements have affected my gaming since their inception, after all I’ve done it, I know that, but it looks like I haven’t!

300 trophies sounds better than something like 35000 gamer points. sounds messy - plus how are you meant to tell what ones were easy achievements and what were tough achievements? you need to compare individual games online or something?!

Personal opinion that though, If anything trophies are the ‘messier’ system to me seeing as there are differing tiers, one of the best things of the achievements is its simplicity. Seeing as achievements have become so popular, so much so that Sony had to implement their own take on it, most people will be able to tell quite easily what are the hard ones and easy ones. I’ve been guilty of some pretty easy score hikes myself after having perused my friends lists to see what they’d done…

trophies are messier. and your smokin crack.

a score of 35000 could consist of nothing but 'bronze' i.e. simple achievements.. how are you meant to tell?

trophies are laid out so you can instantly see whats what.

plus say i have 200 bronze trophies, whats the xbox equivalent? 200 instances of 10 gamerpoints or something?!

aye thats as clear and concise as it gets!
svd_grasshopper on 6 Apr '09
Yes but the trophies are only as hard as the developer makes them, so they could make lots of easy trophy hauls that add up to one easy to achieve platinum one, so attributing difficulty merely on the colour of a trophy is putting your hands in someone else’s definition of the meaning of difficulty.

Achievements are a unified score where difficulty is not really taken into account as a whole, hence why it is more simplistic. At the end of the day both are little hauls anyway, you might say you have 200 bronze trophies where quite a lot were hard to get, and someone might come along and say they have 380 but were all easy to get ones, the same goes for achievements though.

You just cant beat the sound it makes when you unlock an achievement Very Happy. I have a ps3 but I couldn't care less about trophy's . Thats not saying they are bad I just don't care for them .

Problem is you cant see what games people scored their achievements on. Getting a 1000/1000 on Oblivion is harder than other achievements. Most of my points were scored on RPGs. Grind! More!

If you're looking at your friends (and I don't know why you'd care that much about anyone elses) you can drill down to look at individual games and see what achievements they've earned...

I'm wondering which achievement is the one that has unlocked the most of that 52 billion gamerscore (i.e. which one is the most popular). I suppose I'd have to go with the most popular games over the last few years. My money is on:

Landfall (Halo 3)
Off the boat (GTA IV)
Prison Breakout (Gears of War)

Not very exciting, but I can't imagine many people won't have at least one of those.

Whilst we're on it, what's the the coolest achievement? In my opinion (I'm a big fan of the mean ones):

*Body Armor (Crackdown) - pinning people to a car with a harpoon gun = awesome.
*The Menace To Society (Fable) - run around in your pants gesturing luridly to old ladies. *Achievement unlocked. Bing!
*The Bigger They Are (Force Unleashed) - taking out 6 Rancors deserves recognition because they're awesome.
*Enemy of the Poor (Assassin's Creed) - Those beggars had it coming right from the off. I didn't know this was an achievement until it popped. Then I laughed. A lot.
*Crowd Pleaser (Lego Star Wars) - If I could do one achievement again, it would be this one. Good God, I loved smashing Jar Jar to tiny bits!

And the crappest?

Mister NO it All (Command and Conquer 3) - get an achievement worth NOTHING for skipping the tutorial. Just don't bother giving me one.

Trusty Hardware (Orange Box) - I found this one irritating. Not sure why. I guess it just didn't feel like I'd done anything special (especially as I only used it to smash about 3 boxes in the whole game).

There are loads more, but my brain hurts now...

There was an achievement in Transformers the game for transforming for the first time.

In other words, pressing the Y button. Rolling Eyes
Crow555 on 6 Apr '09
Soul Calibur IV had an achievment:

'Start of a new Era'

you had to watch the intro - that was it, you basically had to put the disk in the tray. Granted, it was only 5G I think, but still...

Hardest ever, probably 'Mile High Club' in Call of Duty 4, or maybe 10,000 ranked kills in Gears of War, especially since its glitched...
the_merciless on 7 Apr '09
Does anyone really care?
The 360 is behind the Commodore 64 in terms of graphics and gameplay Smile
HITMANBAZZA on 7 Apr '09
Mile High Club on COD4 was nuts, as was Ghilles in the Mist on Veteran, that bit near the end with the Ferris Wheel nearly resulted in my insanity.

I think a new contender for hardest will be collect all titles and icons in Street Fighter 4, the need for all golds in all challenges is mental!!
