Gearbox: "Borderlands is not cel-shaded "

But there have been "big advancements with the art direction" says dev's Randy Pitchford
Gearbox has jumped to the defense of its little-known-about sci-fi action game, Borderlands, saying internet reports that it's gone cel-shaded are wrong. Sort of.

The studio's main mouthpiece Randy Pitchford explained, "No, Borderlands is not cel-shaded - it's a gritty and serious world after all."

Seems there is something going on though with the visuals. "But since the game was first unveiled we have made big advancements with the art direction and the technology to support the art and have produced some pretty impressive, even shocking results."

Pitchford continued, "We weren't expecting a story about this to break this week, but I'll tell you that the http://www.borderlandsthegame.com website will soon be getting new content that will expose how far we've gone with the art. If the story you guys broke today makes too much noise for us to deal with we may decide to speed up when we update the site with media.

Here's what it used to look like:

"Also, PC Gamer came to visit us recently to check out and play the game with us. The result of that is that the next issue of PC Gamer has Borderlands on the cover and inside there is a big story with a lot of images and a story written by Dan Stapleton.

"Finally, there's always E3 in a few months where attendees can see the game live. I know some folks have figured out that we've done something big to Borderlands even if no one is quite sure what we've done yet and I know I'm still being a bit cryptic on that, but frankly we aren't quite ready for this story to get out."

The story's out if you ask us...

Colonial Marines may/may not be canned, although it is not looking good when the RPG is cancelled and the next title released will be an AvP title. Crying or Very sad

this is bulls**t - cel shadded does not mean Tom & Jerry - has the world never seen anime? a medium that can convey ANY story through "cartoon imagery"
i want to see dickens in anime, then people will believe

GEEKRAGE!!!!! ARRRGHHHHH!!!!!!!! HE'S GONNA EXPLODE!!! Laughing

Lol, I laughed pretty hard at that. Mowglippml has a point though animation is more than mature enough to convey a story with some emotional weight.

Hopefully this will be quite ambitious, Gearbox are a quite solid developer most of the time.

Cel shaded or not that dialog is s**t and predictable.

sorry about that, but thanks for understanding

"Not without guns...a helluva lot of guns"

My god, this game sounds crap already. Just can it and be thankful not too many people have heard about it.

urgh, i hope they replace the actor doing that woman's voice or she gets some better coaching and they re-record her dialogue. it sounds like she's trying too hard to be badass and just reading the lines directly from the page with no emotion at all.

kind of disappointed its not cel shaded, if i remember rightly both madworld and killer 7 are csl shaded and they are hardly kids games.

i agree with mowglippml about anime, if you want a good gritty animated space saga. go watch cowboy bebop or planetes.

Um anyone else reckon that PCG cover is for the US version? Seemingly they are only on issue 188 and the currency is in dollars... That and they just covered Bioshock 2 in their most recent mag...
