Considering the ps3 is twice as expensive (approx) than all other video game systems, and it manages to consistenly sell relatively well. It makes you think what all the fuss is about, in terms of revenue they'd be getting the same as ninty and MS if they only sell half as many units. And I'm pretty sure they must be making a profit on the ps3 (per unit sold) by now.
Ahh, but if the DS sales are put together(as they should be, they've never separated PSP sales between the models) then the DS is still on top so there's nothing to be bragging about.

Don't know about a profit but globally the PS3 isn't selling as badly as some people think. This makes me think that Sony won't be dropping the price until closer to Christmas.

And check out the sales figures outside Japan...the DS & DSi are absolutely destroying the competition.
The current DSi adverts on UK TV are brilliant at attracting the mass market, which is exactly what Nintendo are aiming for...a fun, family friendly device that's cool and designed for everyone, precisely what Apple have done with the iPhone, hence the huge Sony Ericsson losses and massive redundancies announced today!

How when they make such a big loss(it is dropping but still a loss) when selling at the price it is now?
The 360 selling 10,000 units isnt bad but congrats Sony on selling well in your own territory

How much of a loss are they making then?
Not 100% sure but they are still not making any profit on any of the PS3 sold still. It was recently announced that the production costs had dropped I believe they said that Sony were still losing about $150 per console. Happy now?

Edit the figure is $50 dollars.
ah right.. so you don't know
Yes it's $50, Ah so you still cannot read, the part where it says edit gives it away? At least I can provide something to people when they ask me for proof.
Research firm iSuppli says that Sony continues to sell PlayStation 3 hardware at a loss, losing about $50 with each unit sold, each $399 system costing the company $448.73 to build.
According to the agency's previous research, however, Sony has significantly brought down manufacturing costs since the PS3 launched in November 2006, when it spent over $840 for the components in a $599 model, and $805 for the components in a $499 system.
To cut down on those costs, the company has taken advantage of smaller, cheaper chips, with the Cell processor's price down from $89 in 2006 to $46, and the Nvidia Reality Synthesizer down from $129 in 2006 to $58. Because smaller chips require less power, the systems now ship with a smaller and less expensive power supply, costing $21.50 instead of the previous $30.75.
Sony's decision to exclude the "Emotion Engine" PS2 CPU chip, which was used for backwards compatibility purposes with PS2 games, from its newer models also likely contributed to the cheaper manufacturing costs.

ah right.. so you don't know
The fact is they're still losing on every console sold is precisely the issue...sell the system as a Blu-ray player doesn't necessarily equal the necessary movie sales...sell it as a games console and lose money on "every sale"!
Sony are definitely looking at the "long term", but with their current finances and destroyed market capitalisation...they need to focus on Software and PSN to reel in the profits!!

It's only Voodoo being Voodoo he is always the first to say "you don't know" or "wheres the proof" but never provides much if any himself.

Yep of course...but an end to the nonsense surely!!

Voodoo he just gave you evidence and you totally ignored it.
Anywho it's been clarified that the PS3 is selling at a loss and any loss is still a loss.
Don't bother I made a point which while quite valid, just doesn't click in VooSony's head so I'm either sad, cant read the data properly or a friend of either CVG/Bill Gates or both.

I love the entertainment value Voodoo gives me
Oh my how amusing VooSony, you are so intelligent! Aren't you so witty and clever. Can't you back that joke up with an old report? No one will ever dare question you again with that rapier like wit of yours. Feel free now to make what ever claims you want.

Same old Voodoo you do not disappoint me, everytime a point is made and validated (this time with a report from Dec 2008 a whole 4 months ago ) you resort to this, as pointed out in your quote of me above.

The report uses data from October'08 which makes it 6 months old and of course in that time Sony have start using the 45nm Cell chip which means it's already out of date. In fact it doesn't even account for the chip changing from 90nm to 65nm.

That as maybe but still there is no freasher analysis of the cost of the PS3 and you certainly would not come up with any proof that Sony are not losing money on the PS3 still, which after all was my original point. How about showing me that Sony are now making on the PS3's sold?

If you take the time and read my posts you will see I said I didn't know what the profit margin on the PS3 was. The fact is neither do you. To come out and claim as fact it's a $50 loss from a 6 month old report using year old data that makes an estimated guess doesn't make it true either. Probably explains your hissy fit when that was pointed out to you.

Only one having a hissy fit is you as I said something you misconstruded as an attack/dig at Sony. For someone who who keeps saying they don't care about this sort of stuff you don't half go on.

I didn't resort to name calling when asked a simple question.
PS3 sales are not dropping that much christ 6 months ago it was reported that SONY were only losing about 50 quid a console?? so 1 game in cost and the fact its doing well in the uk xbox360 have sold 28 million units to sonys 20 million not to shaby, and what of the RROD? that figure could easly half the xbox unit count lol.last thing GT5 has to get out before the new need for speed or it will lose out.

Oh really so calling me sad first doesn't count you really are a hypocrite, also on that note I notice you never said to the original person I quoted that he doesn't know that Sony are making a profit.

Sorry my grasp on English isn't to good.
Yes we know, nor is mine obviously but the point still stands no matter how bad the grammar is. Hypocrite cries foul whilst doing the fouling .

Obviously as that should be "too good" and not "to good".
People sure do have short memories! Does no one else remember that Sony sold BOTH the PS1 and PS2 at a loss for at least two years into both of those consoles lifes?
Sony know that you make your money back in software licencing. In the case of the PS3 it is not only retail games but PSN brings in a much larger % profit compaired to cost, so even though the loss on the machine is higher this time round, the ways to generate profit are far larger.
The tactic is get the machines into peoples homes then they will buy software for it. You make a profit on the software which more than makes up for the loss on the console.
Ahh but I'm sure everyone will admit that the PS3 sales haven't been anywhere near as big as the PS1 and PS2 games. I mean what is it's best seller?
A little scan around on www.vgchartz.com will answer that. And they are making some really good money from the PSN. Here is what Sony had to saw about the Euro PSN alone: http://playstation.joystiq.com/2008/01/28/psn-sales-surprise-even-sony-ceos/

To make things clear, I don't think there are people who keep on buying games console even if they have got them. That can explain the low selling data of ds. Because everyone has got it. Ps3 didn't sell well at first, now people are buying it lbecause people haven't got it.

How sad!
Killzone 2 has sold 1.1 million units worldwide so far but that figure was taken from the release date which was at the backend of the month. I am also surprised Resistance 2 is not on there seeing how well the 1st sold (also in my opinion one of the better console FPS games).
