Nintendo has revealed global lifetime sales figures for first party Wii and DS titles that shifted over a million copies during the fiscal year ended March 31.
Topping the list is Wii Sports with 45.7 million copies sold, including those bundled with hardware. That total likely puts the game's sales ahead of those of Super Mario Bros, which has long been considered the bestselling game in history with over 40 million sales. The 1985 NES classic was also bundled with hardware.
When approached, however, Nintendo UK said that it couldn't confirm that sales of Wii Sports had overtaken those of Super Mario Bros.
Elsewhere in the data, Nintendo said that Wii Play sales are just 200,000 copies shy of 23 million units, followed by Wii Fit on 18.2 million and Mario Kart Wii on 15.4 million.
On the DS front, the near identical editions of Nintendogs have sold 22.27 million copies, followed by New Super Mario Bros on 18.4 million, Brain Training on 17.4 million and Pokemon Diamond/Pearl on 16.8 million.

saying wii sports is the highest selling game on the wii is like saying hexic hd is the best selling game on the 360, as that's bundled with the machine too.
thats pretty good going for mario super sluggers considering it hasn't been released in PAL regions yet.
Bloody good game too, not your typical sports game. Its like if you took the baseball on wii sports and crossed it with mario strikers and an adventure game.
Am i the only one thats surprised that twighlight princess sold less than a million copies. Kind of sad too. Unless its not classed by nintendo as a wii game.
edit; must just not be considered a wii game which is odd
its sold 4.32 million copie on the wii as apposed to 1.86 on the GC.
Now its been plenty long enough nintendo give us the zelda game the wii deserves.
Yep it's an ordinary game that would sell pretty averagely without the bundle. Bundles should not count towards sales as it gives a poor indication of how the title is actually selling. I have played it and lets be honest , after an hour your done with it.
That is cheating a bit since it comes with the console and I didn't think you could get a Wii without the game.
Wonder how far up the charts Hexic would be for the Xbox as that comes loaded on all the harddrives?
I don't think it technically counts as a bundled game because it's not included in the US (I think) - Tetris is never counted as the biggest selling game due to it being bundled with the Gameboy everywhere.
Palancas7, these are lifetime totals of all those games, not fiscal years ones. Hence the big numbers! I do wonder why Twilight Princess isn't on there. Same goes for Metroid Prime 3...
I can't believe Super Mario 64 DS has sold so much though - that's mad! And I remember when everyone was saying how 'bad' Super Mario Galaxy was selling when it came out. Now its hit 8million and caught up with Halo 3 and with none of the media blitz that pile of sh*te came with. And it'll sell more too, in time...

Those are the titles that sold over a million during the fiscal year. Yes the numbers are lifetime, but only for those games. Games like Zelda, Mario Strikers, Metroid, are also million-sellers, but did not sell over a million during the last fiscal year, that's why their numbers are not there.

Yeah, I get you. I realised when I was just reading about the same news on another site and then headed here to find you've beaten me to the punch of what you just said!
In the same way Minesweeper would be the most "sold" game if it was bundled with every console. These figures are BS. What I would like to see is the "most frequently played game" because I can bet you it aint Wii sports - a game that is only played when people have friends round for a party and rarely touched any other time.

I think you're getting confused between Wii Sports and the Wii in general

Well, I was gonna say that, but didn't wanna have to don my fireproof suit!
Not that is matters so much. 17 of the top 20 selling games are NOT bundled are all by Nintendo. They sell more games than anyone else. Yeah, some of them are the new 'non gamer' games but so what?
Saying that counting a bundled game is cheating is just not true. Many of the casual users that brought the Wii brought the machine for just that reason. What about Tetris on the Game boy? Do those sales not count too? Because everyone who got a Game Boy played that to death! A bundled game, may not always be one the end user would choose otherwise, but the disc has been pressed and is in the possesion of the end-user, so thats a sale.
Anyway this is well old news CVG, by now those figures are well out of date! Heres the top selling games data:
i couldn't agree more. Most people buy a machine based on what game is bundled with it, not the machine itself.
Think about consoles you've bought and think about how many times you've been swayed by a particular bundle.
I know i have been. The only exception has been the wii. HAving wii sports and play bundled with both the machine and extra pad were just an added perk. The games i really wanted to play were Red Steel and Twiglight princess. So ending up with 4 games instead of 2 for the same cash just made the deal all the more sweeter.
One is a car you don't buy extra roads for cars, or think about what adventures will soon be released for a car. Its not based on any external properties other than the car itself.
A games machine is the exact opposite. Unless you're a complete tard, you sit down and think what games are coming out for this machine that i want to play.
Then you go to the shop and look at what deals they've got going and see if you can get the console you wanted bundled with the games you want to play for it.
Personally if given the choice between a PS3 with LBP or Gran Turismo i'd go for the one with LBP because i'm not a big fan of racing sims. But someone else would do the opposite.
Specs have always meant f**k all in gaming. Look at the PS1/2 they were outperformed by thier competition under the hood, but because they were well advertised and had apps that people wanted they sold by the bucket load.
Same goes for the wii. A lot of people want to have a go at their line up. They buy a wii to play wiisports or fit or what ever else is on it. Not just to own a wii. If thats honestly the reason you own PS3 and not the games line up. then i pity you, really i do.
