Sony rubbishes PS3 redesign rumour

"No plans for redesigned PS3," Sony tells CVG

E3's just around the corner and, as always, speculation as to what guns the big three platforms holders are going to fire is rife, the latest being of a redesigned PS3 to be revealed at the show next month.

According to reports, Sony is preparing to make TWO hardware redesign-related announcements, one widely believed to be a new PSP, and the other now speculated to be a (possibly slimmer) redesigned PS3.

Sony UK, however, has told us today: "We currently don't have any plans for a redesigned PS3", so you can throw that one out the window.

Could we see a new controller, maybe? Sensor bars seem to be all the rage at the moment (as rumoured for both Sony here, and Microsoft here).

The days of relaxing in your chair while play games are OVER!

All this hype over motion control! Personally I'd rather they announced a released date and demo for Uncharted 2 and unveiled what Team Ico have been getting up to.

uncharted 2 is out in sept i last heard
Miss_Wacy on 13 May '09
The september realease date is so far only a rumour as far as I know.
flash501 on 13 May '09
Gutted. I was hoping to have a kettle shaped PS3 to go with the George Forman Grill.

Oh well.
Mark240473 on 13 May '09
I'm sure there was an early scoop on the PS3 slim in T3 last year sometime
Rob S London on 13 May '09
Call me old fashioned, but I prefer to play my games with a controller.None of this new motion control mullarcky! If I wanted to swing my arms around like a Chimpanzee on a Acid trip I would buy a Wii. Wink
jonboy1969 on 13 May '09
A bit early on in it's life I think.
Black Mantis on 13 May '09
if they're deniying it, it's probably true. Although it'll probably be available to everyone except europe

Call me old fashioned but I prefer to play games with a joystick. Bring 'em back

I was hoping for a redesign in the style of a Breville Pie Magic.

Motion controls do interest me, but compared to info on games (from MS especially), it's not that important. Although I am quite curious as to how the camera based motion controls that have been mentioned will work.
ricflair on 13 May '09
Even if they were going to release a redesigned PS3, it would be stupid to release news about it far in advance. It will stop people buying PS3s now and wait for them to change first.

The amount of schtick that the PS3 gets about it's appearance, I wouldn't be surprised if a redesign is happening. But like I said, they won't announce it until it's a couple of months away.

Or a toaster shaped version where the disk slot is on the top.
Suivatam109PS3 on 13 May '09
Call me old fashioned but I prefer to play games with a cup and a ball on a bit of string.
kinobick on 13 May '09
Please NO NO NO motion sensing b******s! I h8 the thought of good games opting for this style of play. Thats y i havnt got a wii. If that is the announcement i will be very dissapointed, six axis has failed and its annoying doing anything with it. Just leave the ps3 as it is. Its the perfect console now so leave it alone!!!!

Siting back and relaxing is the hole point in playing games, if i want to act like a t**t dancing and waving like a gimp i will buy a wii. But till then p**s OFF!!!!!!
Mmmmgrolsch on 13 May '09
Redesign the controller.

Move the left Analogue stick to be where the digital pad is....sorted.
Mortey on 13 May '09
i want, i cheap joystick to come out for all consoles , liek the atari 2600 one, crap, with 3 buttons, and one on the top on the thing,. sensible soccer anyone.\.>
if they can have all these accesories and extra controllers, why not have a 12.99 joystik, purely for arcade games, sonic, 2d shooters.. sensible soccer remake...possibilities are endless. haha

Sony UK said that? 'Would make sense really considering they don't design and make hardware to begin with.
djhazardous on 13 May '09
So he denied the rumours about the PS3 but not about the PSP? Seems like it's been a good thing I still haven't got one yet because hopefully there'll be an even better version out (probably with flaws too). Which in a way would be Sony's answer to DSi and yet people won't bitch about it and say Sony is just milking it's fans like everyone says about Nintendo Rolling Eyes
dark_gamer on 13 May '09
Just a redesign of the god awfull PS3 pad please.
DaRockwilder1 on 13 May '09
I don't get why people complain about the ps3 pad. It feels good as it has done ever since the ps1 came out.

I like it better as a feel to the 360 controller maybe that's just cos im so used to it but i dont like the joystick where the pad thing is at all. and my fingers always get crushed in the sides of that stupid ass battery pack.

Don't see why they would redesign it. I guess im the only one that thinks the ps3 is a pretty slick looking piece of kit...?
Al3xbr0wn on 13 May '09
It's probably worth pointing out that you don't have to manically wave your arms about like the loons in the Wii adverts. Small, subtle wrist movements are usually enough and it's no more physically taxing than a regular controller. I have no idea what MS and Sony have in mind for their motion control systems though, so it might be a different matter...

I'd like a PS3 to join my Wii, but there's not a lot of space left under my TV so I'd certainly welcome a more compact version. First and foremost, let's have a significant price cut - I'm broke!
Mlongmdl on 13 May '09

Its probably because your used to it. I play on equally all my games machines and it takes me ages to get used to the analogue sticks.

The battery pack on the 360 pad is a pain though along with the awful dpad.
DaRockwilder1 on 13 May '09
Its loads more effort to hold the pad on the wii, 1st oerson shooters are broke how do u play them with a wand? Its alright 4 a laughnot a proper game
Mmmmgrolsch on 13 May '09

With considerably less effort than a standard controller. The format is perfect for the FPS genre.
Mlongmdl on 14 May '09
Have you tried playing games like medal of honour? Lets be totaly honest ive tried quite a few games and most of the time you have to stand up. Even if some games allow you to sit down you cant sit bk. The motion control is very inacurate its really is no way to play to play any form of hardcore games. Every1 i know agrees, shame really because if people on wii could play people on ps3 and 360 of a game of cod4 you simply wouldnt stand a chance. You would be very slow and miss all of th time
Mmmmgrolsch on 14 May '09
Oh and how did you work out that its considerbly less effort than a normall controller? Please explain excatly which part? And perfect for fps? WTF? Prob perfect for mario or summit like that, but take a look at wii sports its not very axccurate on that, 'infact im still yet to see some1 make the controller work properly.

Its inaccurate and doesnt work properly thats why nintendo are having to bring out the motion plus or what ever it is.

Im not denying that the wii can be a fun thing with friends e.t.c. but taking tha thing seriously would result in me smashing it up
Mmmmgrolsch on 14 May '09
New pics of the PS3 Slim on Kotaku. If they're real, I hope they coincide it's release with a price cut.
Black Mantis on 14 May '09
I sit comfortably in a bean bag or arm chair to play the vast majority of games on my Wii, and have done for the two years I've owned it. I would certainly describe the likes of Mario Galaxy, Zack & Wiki and Zelda as 'proper' games and the control system is terrific for them.

For an example of the potential of pointer/motion control in a FPS, look to the fantastic Metroid Prime 3. Again, not physically taxing to play, and the method is second only to a mouse for accuracy in my opinion. Better, in the sense that you can play in comfort in your front room on your TV (I know this can be done with a PC as well, but it's not practical for most of us).

I find it much easier than a standard controller, and it's not the fault of the machine that not every designer/publisher has been able to get as much out of it as Nintendo has. Motion Plus should resolve much of this issue, which makes you wonder why they didn't just have it built-in in the first place! Another way to get more money out of us, probably...

But that's just my experience of it. I'm not disputing your view; it's clearly a subjective experience and if you have found it to be cumbersome that's your right and I'm sorry to hear it. I hope when something similar is implemented on other systems it is more to your liking because it looks like everything is going that way; Sony and MS have seen all the money The Big N are making and they want some of it. Who can blame them? Smile

Back on topic, I do hope a slimmer, cheaper PS3 materialises soon, because I'm looking forward to getting LittleBigPlanet one day. The one feature on the console that would guarantee instant purchase for me would be multi region Blu-ray and DVD playback out of the box - a great way to have one less bit of clutter under your TV...
Mlongmdl on 14 May '09
You have got a very good point and 1 that I can't argue against
