The Slim PlayStation 3 that "leaked" onto the internet last week could be all but confirmed, after cease and desist orders asking websites to remove the images fired across the internet.
One such legal warning was sent to, among others, Engadget, from a mysterious Chinese firm (where the photos supposedly originated) warning the site that the Slim PS3 photos were "confidential" and "highly possibly illegally released".
"We are investigating this violation and will bring all necessary legal actions regarding this matter. In order to protect the confidential information and prevent you from further legal issues and infringements, please immediately remove those pages and keep our request confidential," it reads.
If someone sends you a cease and desist order over "leaked" photos of a supposed piece of hardware, most of the time they're telling you "yes, those pictures are real". But since this legal shouting isn't from Sony, we're not 100% positive.
A Sony spokesperson told us last week: "We don't know anything about the system in the photos." Are you sure you don't?
i doubt them nasty pictures are ote to do with sony....the PS3 is in my opinion a gorgeous piece of kit, very elegant and smart and well them pictures are cheap and tacky.
Im with the 1st poster, perhaps the Chinise firm have designed a prototype and in the process of talking sony into taking it? That would explain why Sony do not yet know and the fact that its the Chinise firm dishing out the threats?
All I hope for is that Sony save themselves the embarasment, and make sure this does not happen to the Playstation. Its to wide and very, very ugly. It would give something for the competition to laugh at.
Despite the hooting and hollering about how bad the pics of the supposed "slim" PS3 looked, I thought they did look like potentially authentic unfinished casts for a slim PS3. Some people forget that there may be several processes involved in attaining the glossy shine that we've come to expect from the PS3.
I'm interested in seeing whether this turns out to be accurate or a hoax.
Things like this would slow down PS3 sales as people would wait for the Slim model. I obviously have no idea if a new PS3 model is coming out, but that's an explanation to why letters would get sent.
I bet this'll turn out to be false. Odds are the Asian company are making an illegal machine (probably in the same vein as the Vii), and don't want Sony to know about it so they can't be sued for copyright infringement and such.

The news link below presents a possibly more reliable reason as to a potential slow down in PS3 sales based upon current sales data (I'm unsure as to whether the figures are just for N. America or for the world at large).

If Sony are refining the chipsets and cutting costs on internal elements then they might as well rethink the casing too. Although I really can't see that those pics were real
if this is real it makes the whole 'luxury electronics' angle they are trying to play thrown right out the window. That looks like one tacky piece of crap and make no mistake. Think i'll be sticking to my 60gb thanks a bunch.
The Chinese are notorious for stealing companies' interlectual property and producing a similiar product, i.e. iPods. These look and work like iPods but are a million more times more reliable.
I wouldn't but surprised if these knock-off slim PS3s are being manufactured the same way. Computer game piracy is massive in this market!

Both the PS1 and PS2 (and even the first model PSP) in their day were nice bits of kit too, all replaced by cheap and tacky slim versions.
If they re-designed it to the same quality as the original machine, it wouldn't be much of a cost saving would it.
I know for a fact that those are prototypes, ..prototypes don't need to be shiny.
Source?
Forgive me for trusting my own instincts over a textual entity who simply claims to "know for a fact".
There's no doubt in my mind that they'll redesign the PS3, if not later rather than sooner, but those pics ain't it.
The irony being that you claiming "those pics ain't it" is no different than what you question the other poster for. So, in summation: The pics may, or may not, be authentic. Guess time will tell.
I think it will turn out to be legitimate, but the shots taken are not a finished piece of kit and missing a paint job or something.
Sony are hardly likely to confirm it before E3, it would be a major announcement for them. If it is legit though, then there are probably people being hanged by the short and curlies as we speak.
My prediction is they will announce it at E3 and it will be a slim and light version that will be a lot cheaper, but with less in it, eg no WIFI, one USB port or something like that. I also think that the price of the current PS3 will drop too when this is released, thinking September/October for Christmas release and some bundles in the meantime!

The difference being that I'm simply expressing an opinion and not claiming to have insider knowledge.
how come you still have the pics up CVG???(in that link from last week)
aww,i'm telling SONY,
i will say this,of the 3 consoles, the PS3 needs the redesign the most...the current PS3 looks worse than the XBOX1
A bit harsh! I must admit, when I first saw the PS3 I couldn't get over how bulky it looked. From the right angle used in most media shots it looks nice, but up close & personal it's a different story.

They can't be sued for copyright infringement anyway, since China's intellectual property laws are barely non-existent (I wouldn't be surprised if they only applied to government-owned material), and hence things like the Vii aren't actually illegal.
The same would be true for many non-western countries (Russia springs immediately to mind).
im gonna post an xbx slim pic on here , just to counteract this
its everywhere
its the FUNSTATION3
cheap rip off in japn, they do it to psone, ps2 everyconsole, sel it for 3 dola' LOL A PIECE, u have to buy 3000 pieces to get it at that price, so 8500 dolers for a crat of plastic that will bearely work./break after one use.

Fair point, except that the manner in which you stated your opinion made it read as though it were a fact (though admittedly not as blatant as the other fellow's).

Except for existing international legal trade and IP rights agreements which countries whom are members of the World Trade Organization have to abide by (both Russia and China are members, IIRC). So yes, they are still in violation of recognised law and if the products clearly use patented technology from others then that is copyright infringement. Of course, whether or not the various courts where such cases might be tried possess enough political and economic clout to punish the offenders is another matter altogether.

get ur facts str8 people!! THERE IS NO PS3 SLIM.
Personally I found the unconfirmed "PS3 slim" pics design more appealing than the current PS3 design if one uses the imagination to make it glossy and shiny.

Wasn't aware of that, I knew it was the land of rampant software piracy, but aren't familiar with their actual laws. Can't say I'm surprised!
I'm sure such trivialities wouldn't stop Sony. After all, they did get Lik-Sang.com shut down.
Right here goes. That is probably the redesign in the pictures. Sony need to compete. That shiny look is expensive and you lot wont pay the price. Are you telling me a price tag of maybe £150-£200, wont help sell the thing. The cheaper case, smaller die size, possibly the incorparating of many functions onto the one die and the lower priced heat sink that will be smaller, all help to cut costs. Then we have the cost savings of actually shipping the thing. This is a massive cost these days. Lighter, smaller units will save a fortune in shipping costs. Add all these things together and we have a PS3 at a price that may sell in these tight economic times. The Empire is getting ready to strike back. You have all been asking for this so don't mock what you get.
good point. I wonder if you'll still be able to easily swap the HDD in a slimline PS3, If the PS2 is anything to go by. Theoriginal version will still be far superior. However this is to be expected when you scale something back to cut costs.

the cease and disist order is probably because people are taking the pictures as official and will get p**sy when a slim ps3 doesnt turn up. Anyway, whats wrong with the ps3 now? It looks great next to my telly!
Hmm, I presumed the pictures were fake, but this legal stuff does make it seem as if those pictures were actually real, or is that what we are suppossed to think? The plot thickens...
the ps3 is only a little bigger than the 360. but the ps3 doesnt have a big trampy power brick.
True...but you must admit that the new PS3 looks a bit brickish itself!
For starters, it is flatter and less curvier than the previous design and also appears to be less shiny.
More of a roof tile perhaps!
At least now I could rest my mug of coffee on it in the knowledge that it won't slip off as with the old design - which was an utterly unsurpassed doorstop while we're on the subject!
