Mass Effect 2: New details

Combat, planet exploration upgraded for sequel
The first proper Mass Effect 2 gameplay details have emerged via the pages of Official Xbox Magazine US.

According to OXM, the second BioWare sci-fi effort will feature an upgraded combat system, new planet exploration and by the sounds of it, a pretty hefty plot twist as well.

Here's all the new info, in handy bullet point form:

  • You WILL play as Shepard, but for how long we don't know
  • There is a new species called the Drell and Thane is a new character who is an assassin and may join your party
  • Planets: A Krogan planet, Illium planet and an Asari planet described as "like Coruscant from Star Wars" will feature. You'll also visit a Cerebus mothership and an "anti-Citadel" in the game.
  • Story: Shepard is still out to defeat the Reapers, but this chapter will also deal with this Cerebus corporation and it's enigmatic leader. There are human civilizations disappearing and it's up to Shepard to investigate, it's termed as a "suicide mission".
  • New vehicle that controls better than the Mako.
  • Totally revamped inventory system!
  • Elevator system revamped for a greater sense of scope and where you're travelling.
  • Choices are more meaningful and there is a real risk that major support characters (i.e. anyone not Shepard) can and will die.
  • The ending will be far more grand in ME2.
  • More weapons, more species, more/new team members.
  • Returning team members, locations, weapons.
  • On new Mass Effect DLC: "We are definitely working on a substantial new DLC. We're finishing it up and making sure that it's going to be really good, and then we'll announce it, probably pretty. That'll be the last thing between Mass Effect 1 and 2 in terms of content."

According to OXM, BioWare's set to reveal at E3 "whether Shepard is really dead", how the new transit and uncharted world exploration works and "who you ultimately play as". Hmmm.

Thanks, NeoGAF.

Oooh oooh oooh! I'm so excited, and I just can't hide it. WANT NOW!

Anti-Citadel sounds cool. Well, it all sounds cool tbh.

Are the choices from the first game going to affect the second on the PC as well? I think I might have to reinstall ME1 pretty soon...

Whilst I am not as excited as some (see above), I am glad to hear that the things that annoyed me about the first game are being rectified for the sequel. It's just another potentially great game on the list of many coming to a console near me sometime soon (ish).

the main characters in the original could die. I was sooo p**sed off when Rex got killed i restarted from about an hour previous to make sure it didn't happen.

Keeping your favourite characters alive is going to be interesting if there is more chance of it happening.

This is shaping up to be one hell of a sequel.

I'm so pumped about this game I may now require a change of underwear.

I've played the original through 3 times and have one save that I was leaving open for DLC (which I guess is sort of pointless now). Maybe it's time to finally finish off that save slot.

Better Mako controls = awesome.
Better inventory system = more awesome.
Choices that affect more of the game = win.

Only thing I'm not sure about is the change of character. I'm not sure I want to import the character I've worked on just for him to be killed off and replaced with another one which will probably end up looking the same and having the same morality.

as far as i can remember Rex is the only one who could die and that was a choice thing in one of the main missions. never used him anyway so i killed him first time round and kept him alive the second.

All sounds awesome but I still want the original planned combat system as an option.

That wud make it more strategic! I just cant wait for this game! But I do hope it can share the number 1 slot with it's predecessor, coz I don't know if i'll be able to choose between them for my No.1 game. lol. That all sounds awesome, but I don't want Shepard to die! After all the hours I spent working on his/her stats, I kinda feel like he isn't theirs to kill off!!!

WELL SAID!!!

The good Games just keep coming.

Any improvements on the original is a Win in my book.

Sounds excellent. Very Happy

Those planents we're going to visit are really exciting, we're going to see what our follower's home planets are like, their culture and civilization and we will probably get some interesting imput from them too. I certainly hope that there will be more story planets this time round, because the ones in the original were brilliant.

Can't wait. Very Happy

-A grander ending in ME2

Wow. I personally thought the ending to ME1 was the best of any game that I've played. I was on the edge of my seat the whole way through it.

This game is shaping up to be a corker Very Happy

I think I'll have to start avoiding any more ME news items, they've released too much info already.

Aw crap!, aaahhhh not that I want that sort of thing in games anyway of course Wink

Les loving aside, it's absolute blast so far, roll on the sequel.
flash501 on 26 May '09
Illium IS the Asari planet. Probably the one you could see briefly in the CVG trailer.
Daodan on 26 May '09
I hope they determine how the game goes depending on if you finished it the "good" or "evil" way in ME1, I much prefered the renegade ending and I'd love to see where they go with it.

They'll probably force the wimpy good version on us as canon though.
liquid_metal on 26 May '09
Looking forward to this the list of improvements is good so it looks like an essential purchase. Just a shame there are too many essential purchases this year my wallet can't cope.

i got the first game 2 weeks ago and i was blown away. it is now one of my favourite games ever! ME2 will rock, no doubt about it. it'd be awesome if they put co-op in but it could make or break the game if done right/wrong
